Why don't we have a subforum dedicated to prayer requests? I'm sure a lot of people would benefit from it. E-sangha has one so why not this guild? smile

This is a great idea! I'll make the arrangements to create the sub-forum.

@mazuac
Oh yes, Buddhists definately do pray. Prayer is one of the most important and wide-spread Buddhist practices. Daily prayers are commonplace, and it is rare to do meditation with preceding or concluding a session with prayer of some kind.

Rather on the subject of prayer, I have a question that I hope will not seem irreverent -

If Buddhists reject the idea of a creator God, what is the purpose of prayer?
That is to say, who is supposed to be hearing/answering the prayer?

In my case, it's not prayer in the same sense as a Christian would pray. I don't expect anyone to hear or grant what I want - what I do expect is a prayer to help me focus on something I need to help take care of.

For instance, I might pray that everyone have a comfortable, happy life - I don't expect that to be granted simply because I asked, but rather that I make adjustments in my own life that may help the conditions to be met. Like, after I do that prayer? I change my attitude so that my husband may have a better day. I clean the house. I take care of bills that need mailing. This, in the interest of making my own life and his life more comfortable and happier.

Little things, not a grand sweeping miracle. But they're things I can do, a change I can effect. And that's what prayer is for me. 3nodding

So, from what you described, it sounds like a kind of meditation. Like, you're focusing on changes you would like to make or things that need to be taken care of, and getting yourself in the mindset to do it?

That sounds good on a personal level, but then what would be the point of requesting for someone else to pray for you? If your prayer only affects your own mindset and behavior, then how could someone else's prayer help you?

Unless of course, they're planning on taking some kind of action to help you.
I still don't completely understand.

Like I said, that's my version of it. Didn't say it worked for others. I tend to stipulate with 'your mileage may vary' nearly every time I open my mouth about this whole faith. I personally believe there may be a chain reaction in effect in cases like that - I pray for a change in their life, I make changes in my own, other people change based on mine...it gets there eventually. But again, that's me. xd

There's always a belief that people can affect the lives of others through an asking of Bodhisattva intervention - given Bodhisattvas are 'known' to be around for the sole purpose of helping us out of the cycle, maybe one will alleviate the pain of someone so that person could concentrate more on their dharma work; I've also heard stories from other Buddhist of 'passing on good karma' - I'm not sure how it'd work, but they say that through prayer and a genuine wish for betterment, you can hand over some good and improve someone else's lot.

Not my cup, as I'm not much for that sort of thing, but hey - might be how other people are doing it.

It's your wishing of someone else having a better life that slightly raises the chances of that happening to them. Like Maybe you wishing them happy causes your thoughts to effect there mood so they are more prone to happiness while making you a better person at the same time. Oh and that's a good idea.
