For the Darnells' only real magic user, Wisp Darnell really did ignore a lot of the very pertinent advice her mother and her 'uncle' heaped upon her; one of the cardinal pieces of which had always been do not roam around with ghosts, creatures of the night, or anything where you don't know where the safety is. However, she had always associated Thanatos with Antony, and Antony was a friend of the family; therefore she had always seen the invisible shinigami who hung around the older boy as something that would never harm her. Also he was kind of cute; he looked like a boy in a magazine.
She stuck her hands in her pockets as she followed him through the streets, under the distant glare of the streetlights, fiddling with a few yellow-glare star sprinkles in her pocket as she hurried after him.
"Can you really tell where Antony is all the time?" she said breathlessly. "That's kind of awesome."

"Not ALL the time," he said. "Just most of the time, and right now he's like a gigantic glowing beacon so there's no way I couldn't find him," he said. It was frustrating that the only other person he could talk to--that was living--was a ditzy blonde with rainbow power. But he needed help.
He should have never given into his boredom. "This way," he said, turning to the right and heading down another dark street.

"Roger," said Wisp, and darted after him. There were probably worse ditzy blondes with rainbow powers; well. Probably. Somewhere. Maybe. "Is he in trouble? Are we going to save him? Is he being a damsel in distress? He doesn't really strike me as the damsel in distress type. He's more the 'I'm an ice prince badass' type, right?"

"Well then he's an ice prince in distress, okay?" Thanatos said, looking as if he would start tearing his hair out at any moment. "I can't believe the kid hasn't gotten himself free yet. This was supposed to be an easy one! But noooo, he has to play it by the book--"
They were at the edge of the playground, a dark place despite all the lights that surrounded it. It seemed like an unnatural darkness, somehow, as if the entire night was waiting for a drama to take place. It took even him a few minutes to see what was happening.
Two tall forms created darker shadows than the rest of the playground. They were struggling, but the fight was completely silent, save for quiet grunts and heavy breathing.

Wisp stopped dead at the edge of the playground, looking at the altercation. The silence of the fight was eerie and more than a little disconcerting; for the first moment she grew somber, sticking her hands in her pockets again, a star sprinkle between each knuckle as she tensed up.
"Shouldn't we stop it?" she hissed.

"It's him!" Thanatos hissed. "Can't you tell? And the shorter one has to be his old man!"
At that moment the shorter man jerked, stumbling backwards and away from the taller man. He fell to his knees, then slumped to the ground, dead.

Admirably for her, Wisp did not scream. She clapped her hands over her mouth, then thought better of wringing her hands uselessly; she was a Darnell, after all, and a girl of action. The wannabe superhero darted over into the darkness and the playground, on the edge of the fight now, wild-eyed with dismay.
"No!" she said. She'd gotten there too late!

Antony fell to his knees, his head thrown back in a silent scream. The unnatural green aura that had possessed him ran wild for a moment, swirling around him, then moving up, leaving the body.
For a moment Rudolfo hung in the air above him, looking a bit disconcerted. "Is it over?" he finally asked as Antony's body fell forward, flat on his face. "I killed him?" he asked, looking down at Shade. "I killed him!"

"You did kill him," Wisp said, not even accusing, just hollow. She crouched down by Antony on her knees, putting one clammy hand to his neck to check for a heartbeat. It was thready, but there; he was alive. His father was less lucky. "He's dead!"

"Not him!" he said. "Shade! Genocide killer, mass murderer, the bane of my--well, not existence... my after life! I've avenged my people!" he said. He started to fade, then, becoming semi-transparent, then almost fully transparent.
"Sorry bout killing your old man, though, kid," he said as he glanced at Antony. Then he was gone.

Wisp threw one of the sprinkles up to see by; it let out a sulfuous light just as the streetlights had, banishing the cloying darkness away. Not quite knowing what to do, she joggled at Antony's shoulder a bit, wrinkling her nose up; only if he was barfing blood or something was she going to issue CPR. "Wake up, Antony," she said, "please, are you okay?"

His eyes popped open, staring at her blankly for a second before her jerked to a sitting position. "Dad!" he said, crawling to his father's side. "Dad, dammit, don't die--"
"Relax, Wisp," Shade said from where he was still lying in a dramatic "dead" fashion a few feet away. "Neither of us is dead."

"But," said Wisp, "but, but -- but he stabbed you and you LAY there and you looked DEAD, you looked REALLY REALLY DEAD. DEAD DEAD."
She started to laugh a bit; the stress was coming out, and it made the laughter a bit hysterical. "Are you a zombie, Mr. Shade. Because that would lead to more problems."

"Spirit blade," shade said, pulling the blade out of his chest. "Only works on ghosts. Thankfully he didn't realize that."
"How did you know?" Antony asked. "Did Thanatos ask?"
"No, it was just pretty obvious."

"That's sort of gross," said the smaller girl meditatively, "cool, but gross."
