I watched the pilot again last week. It's very layered and moody and needs far more than a single viewing to fully appreciate.
Yes, the concept and crew are still heavily influenced by the parent show, cause it's kinda hard NOT to be. The music's by the same guy, Ron Moore and Jane Espensen still run things and the humans are still grappling with the increasing complexities of artificial life. However, what makes the show work is the simple fact that the story is personal. The Graystones and Adamas are the families you see and will try to understand. Both have lost important women to a terrorist attack, and the religious ramifications are an important sub-plot/co-plot.
When that first workable Cylon model focuses that red laser eye... chills. Those Cylons may be CGI, but they are SCARY as hell.
Zoe had the biggest ego I've ever seen in a TV series, but she has a lot to do with the all-important sentience aspect to the robotic programming. Her father may have invented the technology, but she managed to perfect it. A fifteen year old genius girl... I like.
And Joseph's connection to the Tauron Mob will be very exciting to watch unfold. The "dirt eaters" will have much more to do, I'm sure. Oooh, and we get to see the infamous lighter. That will be sweet. (I'm obviously a BSG fangirl in the extreme if you haven't already noticed and don't know what that last part meant.)
