Marut swished her tail, then stilled it, watching the frog on the rock. It was just sitting there, so still, and she wondered if it was still alive..well a pounce would determine that! The filly raised her back end up, her bottom wiggling, and then she jumped forwards, hooves clattering against the rocks.

As she did so, the frog took fright, leaping straight into the slow trickling river with a 'plop' noise, and Marut skidded as she strained to see where it went, tumbling over and into the water herself.

Luckily she didn't squash the creature, and she saw it swim off, away from between her legs as she righted herself with a giggle, shaking water off her mane.
'I'll get ya next time!' she called, getting to her hooves and clambering out of the river, shaking herself all over this time, and flopping on the river bank, stretching lazily in the sun so that she would dry.

Ah, foals. All Inali could say she knew about them was where they came from. At least she knew that much! And she knew that she wanted her very own foals, without the painfulness of having to give birth and all that nonsense. So it was much to the red mare's delight when she saw a little blue figure stretched out on the riverbanks. A foal! Oh, this could be fun. And there wasn't a guardian about. Inali took it quite seriously on herself to make sure that the foal was safe, at that moment. She appointed herself protector of the poor little filly who didn't even know what was coming.

Concern soon overwhelmed all else in Inali. She meant well, she really did, and that was why she nudged the pretty blue and white filly with her nose. What if it was dead? What if she was in a coma? What could Inali do? "Are you all right?" Silver eyes growing wide in their concern, Inali anxiously waited to see if the still figure would prove to be okay. It looked like she was breathing, but what if that was some bizarre guess build up in the corpse? Ahhh, who left their foal alone?!

Marut had begun to drift off, her head nodding as the sun made her warm enough to feel sleepy. So when the mare nudged her, she fair jumped out of her skin.

'What, what?' she yelled, scrambling to her feet, her heart almost leaping out of her chest. When she saw who'd done the awakening she let out a long breath.

'Jeez lady, you scared me. I'm fiiine.' she elongated the last word, blinking her bi-coloured eyes at the red mare.

'I lost several years of my young life, but I'm fine. Who're you?'

Inali felt infinite relief when the filly bounded to her feet, two colored eyes wide in shock. Well, it appeared that she wasn't dead. No, certainly not so. In fact, Marut looked the opposite of dead, and she was confronting Inali on why the red mare had bothered to wake her up. How to explain it without sounding silly? There really was no way to go about it. Sighing inwardly, Inali plunged forward with her explanation, stupid or not.

"Well... You were lying so still. I thought you might have been dead. I was worried." It sounded even more stupid once it was out in the air, out of the safe confines of Inali's mind. Oh jeez.

"And, erm.. I'm Inali. Sorry to wake you up." Inali really was sorry, though more for herself than for the filly. Did she have to mess everything up when it came to foals? She was so bad at this whole business!

Marut yawned, stretching now, the intial fright having subsided. The old mare obviously had meant well but jeepers. She could have woken her in a quieter manner, poking her had just been plain mean!

'I was asleep.' she answered, raising an eyebrow.
'Don't the sleep where you come from? Is it the Land of No-Sleepers?' she said, all cheeky and curiosity now.

'Marut. Is me. And yes, it's a boy's name, go blame my mother for that.' she said, of course she had no way of knowing if the mare would question about her name, but she decided to say anyway.

'So, what you doing around here? Apart from poking what you think are dead foals.'

Marut wrinkled her nose, maybe she should have pretended she was dead. That was pretty spooky. Besides, who went around nudging dead things? This mare was weeeird, but kinda cool.

Inali felt a blush rising to her cheek at the foal's words, but she couldn't argue with them; they were too well-founded. "No, we sleep where I come from. We just don't look like we're dead while we sleep." Inali couldn't resist chastising the foal a little bit, though she knew her behavior to be a bit... well, it was foolish, wasn't it? Foals were allowed to behave as they would. Inali was older, and should know better.

At least the filly had a rather masculine name. It made Inali feel better, to have some sort of superiority over the little one. Again, her behavior was stupid, but Inali couldn't help it. Marut! Hah! That was a colt's name. And this was most definitely not a colt.

"I'm just walking around. I can't just explore?" Suddenly defensive, Inali bristled all over, shaking her silver forelock out of her eyes. "Plus, don't you ever want to poke dead things? Just to see if they're dead? They give way and squish inwards." Eyes widening, Inali fell into theatrical mode as easily as she had fallen into the defensive.

'Well that's good, you'd fall down or something if you dint sleep I think,' Marut flopped onto the grass again, stifling a yawn. If she was going to talking to this old mare, then she might as well be comfortable whilst she did so.

'Neither do I. Maybe you have something wrong with your eyes?' she said, rubbing her nose against one front leg.

'Jeez lady,' she repeated again. Why was she getting all snippity with her? Marut hadn't been the one who'd woken her from a nap!
'I only asked. And nah, my mother doesn't like me playing with dead things. I think she thinks I'm gonna go all bad and be like grandmother if I do that.'

Inali instantly felt ashamed for snapping at Marut, but pervasively enough, was tempted to do it again. Oh dear. How immature can I get? The mare wanted to just run away from the awkward social situation, but instead stood her ground, mind racing a mile a minute to attempt and get back on safer ground. Luckily enough, Marut seemed to accomplish that all on her own.

Go all bad like her grandmother? Inali found herself looked askance at the blue filly, trying to see any obvious signs of kalona heritage. That was the only evil sort of soquili Inali had ever met, barring a few exceptions in other species. Marut didn't look like she was part kalona, but you could never tell, could you?

"Is your grandmother a kalona?" Inali could no longer resist asking. Marut didn't seem like the type to have evil blood coursing in her veins. She was a cheeky filly, but she was by no means evil or 'bad'. Inali was worse tempered than Marut, after all!

Even looking out of the corner of her eye, Inali saw no kalona wings hiding in secret, or fangs waiting to spring out of Marut's mouth. Nope, she was not going to be devoured today. At least not by Marut. Inali certainly couldn't predict if she would be eaten later, after all!

Marut stopped trying catch a worm that was wriggling between the grass stalks and into the ground and looked back at the mare, squinting against the sun.

'Kalona? Yeah, big old mean Kalona.' Marut said for emphasis. Marut kind of thought that her mother's mother was kind of like a scare story, eat your greens or she'll get you kind of thing, but Neve had assured her that wasn't the case, and her older sister Maharet had said the same thing. Then again Maharet was afraid of her own shadow so that wasn't much to go by.

'She'd eat you.' the filly said off handedly.
'Then again, she'd eat me.' she giggled. Marut wasn't like her elder sister, and didn't live her life in fear. Besides, she knew her mother would protect her with her life.

Well, you couldn't fault the filly for fear. Marut seemed brave, despite the fact she had just admitted to kalona heritage.

"Well, you don't look like you have a drop of kalona in you. Or a drop of evil." You could never tell with foals, but Marut seemed amiable enough. If she was kept under the right influences, she could grow up to be quite a mare. It tickled Inali, the idea of one day raising her own little filly and teaching her the ways of the world (and of stallions).

"I'm sure I wouldn't let your grandmother eat me, though I think she'd try. I look pretty tasty, if I do say so myself. You'd just be a snack!" Laughing, Inali threw her head back, a gesture that wasn't at all ladylike. Well, no one said she was everything she professed to be.

"How many brothers and sisters do you have Marut?" Inali was curious now, curious about the little blue filly she had stumbled upon.

'I know I don't, and not evil, just naughtiness,' Marut said with a toss of her mane and a childish chuckle.

'My brother looks like one, got the squiggly snake tail of a Kalona.' she flicked an ear as a curious fly landed on it, causing the fly to buzz away in annoyance.

'Yeah, I'd be a snack, but I think you would have a fight to get away from her, my mother is really tough and brave, but she got badly injured by Grandmother Izusa.' Marut stretched again, kicking at the ground with her back hooves.

'Me? I have a sister and four brothers. How many you got?'

It was still hard for Inali to imagine Marut having kalona family members, but she supposed that if the blood eventually became diluted enough, you would end up with relatively normal looking family members. Marut said her brother had the tail of a kalona, so perhaps it had all boiled down to that point, where only a few characteristics showed here and there.

"I don't have any sisters and brothers that I can remember." Did she have any? In the past, perhaps, there had be others with her coat coloration and attitude running about, but they were no longer part of her life. "Perhaps I do. I think it would be nice to have siblings. Do you enjoy it?" Of course, siblings often professed to hate their siblings, but the love was there all the same, for everyone to see.

"But if I find a mate one day, I shall unofficially have all of his brothers and sisters. I'll find myself a family, one way or the other.

Marut tried to imagine life without her brothers; naaaaah! Who would she beat up, or play with, or generally get on the nerves of if she didn't have Vartan and Ishmael?
She nodded;
'Yeah, I get on with both my brothers, even though we fight sometimes. But they don't get on with each other which I think is stupid.' she said, huffing a little. She didn't understand the silly arguments that went on between the both of them.

'Mate? You don't have one of those then?' Marut was only asking because Inali bought it up in the conversation - she was too young to even care about that after all!
