Getting a roomful of antsy children to focus was a challenge on any day, even more so once the sun was shining and the temperature outside was hovering in the low 90s. Impressionism just failed to capture anyone's attention when it was such a perfect day outside!
Prosper decided that a field trip was in order. He instructed a few of the more graceful students to assist him in carrying the big buckets of colored chalk, and had the class follow him out onto the blacktop. For the rest of the morning's lesson they would be free to draw whatever their heart's desire was.
------------------
Ophelia set her bucket of chalk down and contemplated the surface in front of her. It was so hot out! She could see hazy lines of heat rising off the pavement - what would be really nice right now was an ocean. She picked up a piece of blue chalk and began drawing wavy blue lines on the pavement. She whistled as she worked, and a trio of stars orbited her head thoughtfully.
Maybe someone else would come help her! Then they could draw together! That would be lots of fun.

Kaimi had quickly discovered that her opinion of school was relatively low. There were much, much better things to be doing than sitting in a stinky classroom looking at numbers on a board. Then again, it did have it's redeeming factors. Like today. The pull of chalk-art was just too excellent to pass up. And it meant spending time outside, soaking up the blistering heat and basking in the sun, something Kaimi always loved to do.
Out on the blacktop, she looked around for a good spot to draw before spotting a semi-familiar brunette. Kaimi's face split into it's customary grin as she approached the other girl. "Hi! Ophelia, right? I'm Kaimi, from the surfer shop. Remember?" She stood across from Ophelia, her shadow casting a dark splotch over the blue of the ocean.

Prosper had pretty much captured what Wisp's idea of bliss was; the only way to have upped the ante would have been if he'd instructed them all to chalk murals outside of grey buildings with revolutionary messages and maybe some angry-looking whales, but it was pretty near to perfection. She rolled up the sleeves of her t-shirt and sat down in her jean shorts and -- plopping herself down quite close to the pretty brunette girl with the stars -- distracted herself even from saying Cool! by setting to with the chalk.
What was the girl next to her doing? The sea! What a wicked cool idea. Well, the sea had to have things in it, right; absorbed in what she was doing, Wisp Darnell started to draw a trio of jellyfish.
Then she gave the jellyfish hats and speech bubbles. The first jellyfish was announcing "rad!". Probably this was not really what the sea was all about.

Nataya held a piece of chalk in her hand, tilting her head to the side as she watched the other kids. It looked simple enough; apparently this chalk stuff let you draw on the ground. She walked over to a group of her fellow students, looking at what appeared to be a drawing of the ocean. She smiled, giggling as she saw the the three jellyfish drawn by the blonde girl. She knelt down, watching the others draw for a moment. She wanted to jump in and join in the ocean-y fun, but remembered her manners before doing just that.
"May this one join?" she asked, her tone soft as she looked up at the other girls, a small smile spreading across her face.

Awkward. That's what it was. Carlisle had been standing with a bucket of chalk for a few minutes now, watching the other children settle down to draw things. He really didn't feel like putting the chalk down, especially because that would mean he would have to join them. While he wouldn't mind the company- he was a very social child, really, just a little shy and stuff, like Aunt Bella said- he figured they wouldn't want him to be messing up their chalk drawings.
Facts were, Carlisle could not draw. He could color just fine, he reckoned. But actually, the act of beginning to draw, he... just wasn't any good at it. So even though he sidled over towards the other children, smiling uncertainly, he didn't move to put down the bucket. "Hello," he said. "Do you have all the colors you need?"

Ophelia smiled up at Kaimi and motioned to a spot on the ground. "'Course I do!" she said happily, and leaned over to inspect the blond girl's jellyfish. She had never seen a jellyfish wear a hat, nor talk, but this was art and art was all up to individual tastes (her dad said that in class all the time.)
But, oh, there were so many people here now! Ophelia smiled at the winged girl and the pale boy who had joined them, a bit frazzled by their assumption that they needed permission to draw on this patch of sidewalk. "Sure!" she told the girl. "We don't own the ground or anything."
She eyed the boy's bucket for a moment, and then eyed her own. Green was suspiciously missing. She reached over and pulled a green green piece of chalk out of the bucket he held. "Thank you!" she chimed, and began drawing a sea turtle next to the blonde's jellyfish.
"I'm Ophelia," she said, "What're your names?"

Kaimi cheerfully grabbed a chunk of purple chalk and began drawing in some flying fish above the waves. Since she didn't know what flying fish really looked like, her images rather looked like goldfish with a wide variety of fairy and feathered wings. She was rather content with them, though.
She smiled up at Carlisle from her seat on the asphalt. "Don't you want to color too?" She asked, patting the spot next to her invitingly. She was in her element with all these kids. There was Ophelia, and a girl who looked like a rainbow, and another girl with wings, and now this boy who had a big red glowing halo-like thing around his head. Kaimi felt right at home, for once school didn't totally suck.

"Thank you." Nataya said, smiling brightly at the other girl. "This....I'm Nataya. It's very nice to meet you, Ophelia." She heard the other voice behind her, turning her head to look at the person who had spoke. "Hello!" she said, giggling as she recognized the nice boy from the Easter egg hunt. She then looked back down, getting to work on drawing a mermaid. Not the human-looking mermaids that Disney portrayed, but more fish-like, like Momma had described them.
She smiled, looking at the other two girls. "What are your names?" she asked, tilting her head to the side.

"C-carlisle," he stuttered, frazzled himself by the sudden concentrated attention. He relaxed a little when Ophelia looked back to the ground and drew something he guessed was rather... sea-turtle-y. With a clank, he set the bucket down and knelt next to it. "No thank you," he said to Kaimi, poking around the chalk bin for something. He didn't quite know what, though. Probably just trying to distract himself from something or other, he decided, though he didn't know what from either.
He tossed his hair over one shoulder. It looked like fun, but he didn't want to mess anything up. "Those are nice jellyfish," he said.

Kaimi turned her attention to Nataya and smiled cheerfully, brushing some hair from her face and leaving a bright green chalky streak on her skin. "I'm Kaimi." She announced, peering over at Nataya's mermaid. "She looks really neat." Kaimi added, impressed. Her own art skills were rather lacking, but she hardly minded. As long as there were lots of colors, she was perfectly happy.

Nataya looked at Kaimi, mirroring the other girl's smile. "Hello! It's nice to meet you." she said, giggling once. She then blinked, taking a moment to realize what the other girl had said. "Thanks!" she said, her smile widening a bit. "I like your fishies; I wish Momma had some of those in her fish tank." she said, looking at the winged fishies. They were pretty, not to mention purple. "What kind of fish are they?" she asked, curious.

"The flying kind!" Kaimi chirped, adding a pair of butterfly wings to one fish, emulating Nataya's wings. "I like your wings," she added, "can you fly with them? Are you a fairy?" Her eyes were wide and curious. How she would love to fly! Or even to meet a real fairy!

"Cool!" Nataya said, giggling as she looked at the fish. Wow, she had no idea fish could fly! That had to be an amazing sight... Her train of though was interrupted by Kaimi's voice, bringing her back to reality. "Thanks." She then paused, thinking a moment. "I...I don't know. I've never tried to fly before." she said, pressing a finger to her lips; why hadn't she tried yet again? She then nodded her head, smiling brightly. "Yup! I'm a fairy, just like my Uncle Matthias, but he doesn't have wings."

"Wow! A fairy? Really?" The flowery scent surrounding Kaimi grew suddenly stronger as her smile widened. "You should try to fly! I'll help! I'll stand at the bottom and catch you if you fall or something!"

"Yeah, really." Nataya said, nodding her head once. She didn't see why Kaimi was so excited; that was normal, wasn't it? She blinked, wondering where the nice smell was coming from. It smelled kind of like the garden at home and kind of....not. She then smiled a bit more. "Maybe I'll go to the park after school and try." she said, thinking about it. It could be really fun! And she could surprise Momma with the new skill!
