About the Elysian Familiars
Basic Introduction:
When summoned, every elysian recieves a familiar. This familiar will become their closest, most trusted friend. More so, even, than their summoner. An elysian and their familiar are nigh unto inseperable, even becoming physically sick when apart for too long. They're strongly empathic to eachother's emotions, sharing feelings and sensations. While an elysian may try to hide what their thinking, their familiar will display it quite clearly if not kept in check.

Normal Familiar Types:

Chocobo: A small, fluffy yellow bird. Very mild and generally good natured. Loves to eat green things. Have been observed attempting to eat Cactuars. Is also known to randomly break into dance.
Pupu: A curious blue creature with a glowing light on its head. Will do and say very odd or nonsensical things, sometimes demanding that it be given Ethers. Has a tendency to drink any bottled liquid it can find.
Moogle: A soft, pudgey little creature with a bright fuzzy pom-pom dangling above its adorable face. The moogle is naturally warm and friendly, even more so when offered any kind of sweet food. Moogles have a tendancy to harrass Magic Jars, convinced that they're actually Magic Cookie Jars.
Behemoth: Although about the same size as any of the familiars, the Behemoth still acts like its the biggest thing on four legs. It likes to push on things with its thick skull and horns, and may even bite if provoked. For some reason the Behemoth has developed a love of Flan and will sit quite happily for hours licking any one it comes across.
Bomb: Although the Bomb constantly appears to be on fire, it's quite cool to the touch. When excited, however, its body temperature rises at an alarming rate. If not calmed it can release a small firey burst with about a two foot blast radius. After which it passes out for a short while.
Ahriman: This little monster always has to have its big eye on everyone's business. Will sometimes attempt to perform what it calls a "DOOM" attack. It's amusing to watch them flap and stare unblinkingly at you for a minute or so, but the gesture is otherwise harmless.
Coeurl: A cat-like creature with long, slender whiskers that can, if touched, cause stiffness to the exposed area. When startled or angry the Coeurl can use its whiskers to conduct a nasty electric jolt that causes temporary paralysis in smaller targets.
Flan: Being a jiggly pile of amorphous goo is tiring work. And so, be it in the cabinets, on someone's head, or even in the middle of eating dinner, a Flan will always find a time and place for a nap. Their favorite mode of transportation is latching onto the nearest moving object and just enjoying the ride.
Cactuar: Thankfully, this little cactus has no thorns. Occasionally it may attempt an attack it calls "1000 Needles", where it will begin to flail around madly for a few seconds to little effect. Its best defense is its quick little feet. In fact, a Cactuar's first response to any new situation is to run away. Even if it just happens to run right into a wall.
Moomba: Bright red with spiked hair everywhere, the Moomba much resembles a rogue flame when bounding around. It's quite energetic, playful and friendly when its around familiar faces, but may become withdrawn and cautious around new environments or people. Easily distracted by fire, and if left unattended, may start small ones itself.
Magic Jar: It's unknown what kind of creature resides within the little floating jar. Whenever one tries to remove the top, the creature becomes very agitated and will cry, spin, bounce and roll all over the place for quite a while before calming down. Currently all that's known about it is that it has a fondness for Elixers, which it asks for on a regular basis. Pity no one knows what exactly an Elixer is.
Tonberry: Don't let the innocent little green face fool you, the Tonberry is a stab-happy little booger. Thankfully it only has a butter knife and a candle, but it will on occassion grab hold of a fork or stick to use for its diabolical proding. Beware the call of "Doink!", for a poking is never far behind.
Mu: A Mu tends to be very nervous and twitchy, since it's constantly trying to hide its acquired goodies. But being blue and fluffy with a rediculously large tail, the only way it can hide itself after "finding" items is by burrowing into the nearest soft surface. It's not uncommon to find little Mu treasure chambers in the laundry or under the blankets.

Other Familiar Types:

Feral: These familiars wander near the temple occassionally, but aren't seen too often due to their solitary nature. Feral familiars can be based on just about -any- monster that has appeared in a final fantasy game. This means they have completely different lineart (in most cases) than normal familiars. Ferals are also limited, and only a certain number of the same type will ever be given out. (Just keep in mind that the staff members make the final decision on whether or not the familiar in question is classified as feral or hellion.)

Hellion: The big guns of the familiar world, hellions take the form of the bosses and fiercer creatures of the final fantasy world. These familiars are probably the most ellusive of all types and are very rarely seen around the temple. They prefer to keep their distance from their weaker friendlier cousins. Also, while feral familiars are not completely unique, hellions are. The same hellion will never be given out twice. (Please note that -all- dragon type monsters are considered hellions.)

Hybrid: These are something of an oddity in the familiar world. A hybrid shares the characteristics of two different types of familiars (and on rare occassions, summin spirits as well). Not much is known about them at this point, but it should go without saying that these familiars will be few and far between.

Soul mates.
[How elysians find theirs.]

There are three ways that a familiar usually comes to bond with a summoned elysian:
  • Familiars are naturally drawn to the temple when there is a summoning. The small creatures eventually sense the summoner's will and one will seperate itself from the rest and bond itself to the elysian.
  • A familiar will sometimes hear an elysian's call from within the Nexus itself and seek out the crystal gateway. The familiar will shadow the crystal closely until the summoning occurs, where it will bond itself to the new arrival immediately. If a familiar is seen shadowing a crystal, it is safe to assume that the elysian in question has been spoken for.
  • Summoners are able to have multiple familiars before ever even obtaining a crystal shard. Should they one day summon an elysian, one or more of their familiars will likely want to bond with the creature. It is ultimately up to the summoner if they wish to let this happen or seek out a different familiar instead.

Bondage.
[Get your mind out of the gutter!]

An elysian's familiar is basically their anchor to this world. An elysian with a familiar can remain in Gaia indefinately, whereas normally, they would only be able to manifest for short periods of time. Currently this phenomenon is still under investigation, and not much is really known about the way this anchoring effect works.

A familiar bonds itself to a newly summoned elysian simply by opening its mind to them and initiating some sort of physical contact. After that, the bond is established and irreversable.

Bondage II.
[Understanding the bond between an elysian and their familiar.]

The link that connects a familiar to its elysian is extremely strong. Everything from their perception, their emotions, their thoughts even their physical sensations are shared. Also, they may exercise limited telepathic communications, though elaborate sentances or concepts are not possible. When they become exicted or distressed, this form of communication often becomes jumbled, confusing, and generally unusable. An excited familiar sending a thought of "Ice cream and cake!!" could very well impart "I'm a screaming steak!".

An elysian and their familiar are so closely bonded that they even become physically pained when seperated from eachother. The distance at which the minor discomfort becomes real pain, and then finally sickness, differs from case to case. It is unknown what would happen if the seperation was prolongued, or if the distance becomes too great.. but it is probably safe to say that the result would likely be fatal. By the same token, the death of a familiar would probably send such an immense mental shock to an elysian that it would die from sheer despair.

Bondage III.
[To be added after the release of Project Nexus.]

Bondage IV.
[Of summoner and familiar.]

A summoner's relationship with a familiar is similiar to that of an elysian's, but on a much smaller scale. A summoner's familiar can sense its owner's stronger emotions, but cannot relay its own. Also, their communication is limited to speech, as there is no deeper connection to allow any advanced telepathic interactions. Familiars are still fiercely loyal to their summoners, though, and make excellent and intelligent companions.
