Video game characters in the new video game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed are becoming unpredictable. Throw something at the white-armored troopers, and they may toss a grenade back. Or they might just put their hands up. Or they could do something completely new, each time the game gets played. Video games used to come pre-programmed with canned movements that expert players eventually could anticipate and figure out. But recent advancements in video game design -- and new game consoles with dazzling computing power -- have endowed computer-controlled characters with a sense of self-preservation and unpredictability not seen even a year ago.

How do you think this could help with future technology?
What does this mean for future video games as well?

I could easily see this sort of technology being applied to AI robotics....of course that just screams terminator in my mind, but there could be all sorts of useful applications for things such as search and rescues, and other emergency situations.....

However I'm rather happy that storm troopers will be more entertaining....I would always get board of a game with predictable enemies...it would almost become second nature to just turn and shoot because you know that there is an enemy there.

I can see how it could be used in emergency situations but I'm not quite sure how it would be applied to search and rescue. Can you elaborate on that some more? It would be interesting to hear about. I also really hope they apply this technology into other games as well. For example, Call of Duty 4 or 5 (If there is one coming out.)

Well in a search and rescue operation there will be more living things than just the people being searched for. An AI system would have to learn what not to look for as well as be able to treat and help a lost person should it be needed. The AI system may have to respond quickly to a number of things, an attack by a wild animal on a person, broken limbs, or sickness, and possibly hypothermia if it's a colder time of the year and may even have to be with the person for an undetermined amount of time if the lost person is in a hard to reach place, or if inclimate weather prevents total rescue.
I don't know, it just sort of popped into my head 'cause my dog got lost yesterday, but we found him at the end of the day thankfully. See, here in Colorado if you lose a pet, you have a day or two to find them before they're a snack for something else. And my dog, cody, is blind, Diabetic, 14 years old, and partially deaf, he wouldn't have made it through the night.

I have a question, is this the same technology they used in GTA4?

I wouldn't be able to tell you that answer to that, considering I don't even know what it is. xp

GTA4 is grand theft auto 4. They did a presentation about something similar on TED talks and they mentioned GTA4 as being one the games that uses an AI that responds in real time to almost realistic physics. I wish I could find that article again so that I may post it here.
