The gentle rustlings of worn leather and creaking metal caught on the whisper of the evening wind, rattling through the silent and towering trees. With the setting of the sun, creatures of the night had crept from their burrows to take the land that daywalkers had so proudly claimed. Yet, there was a foreigner among them, a beast that roamed freely through sunlight and shadow without need for pause or rest. It shifted silently through the forest, ink-dipped paws pressing into the moist earth which threatened to sink underneath its weight. There was no chance of light on nights like these, caught between evening and early morning. Even the moon had hidden its golden face behind bloated clouds, casting the realm into an abyss. Yet, still, something gleamed as it crept close to the forest floors, in the form of crimson glass and feral markings etched across dark skin. Even the eyes shone faintly, muted orange and ever-flickering. He had no purpose, and no desire. All he knew was to wander until something caught his attention, pausing faintly to bat at it with a paw, to flick his plumed tails or to tilt his head and send sanguine beads clattering amongst his braided locks. His eyes were half-lidded with boredom, and eventually, the kitsu sat without warning to stare off into the forest. It was quiet, and he had nothing to do. He'd lost sight of the snarling, ivory behemoth whom he'd learned provided much amusement to him, using one paw to bat absently at his own beads. They sparkled and shimmered, hotter than any normal glass should be. He was content then, to sit and paw at them for now... at least until something more interesting arrived.

A tiny pool of light trembled as it flicked from one spot to another, lighting up little patches where light would not have normally hit. At least not on a night such a this one, and the blonde male had to ask himself as to why he was out on such a night. It wasn't a full moon, or at least not that could be seen. But he needed courage now, an emotion that was foreign to him save for those...special nights. Throwing yourself out into your greatest fears was a good step, wasn't it? Or perhaps it was just stupid, and Xerviree was thinking that it was such at this pirticular point.
He shook as his flashlight Pib droped to the ground with a clank, the light going out for a split second before returning. "A-axis." he stammered, quickly scooping back up the fallen object and waving it around to make sure nothing had crept up on them. "Maybe this was a bad idea." His voice sounded as though he were choking, night was not one of his favourite times. It was dark at night, it was dark when you slept, it was dark during the day sometimes in certain places. And you couldn't see all that well when everything was pitch black. He was terrified. Anything could creep up on you when you couldn't see as well as whatever was lurking. Such was the reason he always carried his flashlight, monsters hated them after all. Even though he had a wand, he had magic, that was not as powerful as he belived a flashlight could be.
That wasn't to say that magic didn't come in handy. But when you had trouble pronoucing things every now and then you started to come up with alternate ideas.
"Monysters....monsters. They coulb be anywhere. This was a bad night. We can't send them away on such a dark night. Maybe..we should head back...Axis?" Chocolate eyes glanced back at the red haired female. His sister, someone he was almost never without. She knew how to keep him calm, and just how to make him feel better. She would know just what to do and say at a time like this.

"You promised." Was the simple reply Axis gave her brother. He promised he would try to get over his fear of darkness. Xerviree had always been this way since they were young, always clinging on to Pib, his flashlight. And Axis was determined to help her sweet brother get over his fear.
There were insecurities involved though. What if...he did get over his fear and got braver? Would the sweet brother she had always known change? Would he be so different he wouldn't be with her anymore? She was rather reluctant, and scared that that would ever happen. The full moon was an example of his bravery, and it had frightened her.
But every time it got dark, she could feel his fear for the dark, for the unseen monsters he imagined. Even Ayako was getting worried, and her advice to Ree had been to no avail. Axis had taken it upon herself to help her brother.
Besides, it would be inevitable right? One day, they might find their own mates...and not be together anymore. "We're together right? It'll be fine."

It was that tiny beacon of feeble, quivering light that pierced through the gloom and illuminated his curiosity. The ebony kitsu bolted upright, feet firmly planted and head swaying ever so slightly with his intrigue. What... was that? Tanyll knew little of fascination or awe--merely knew he wanted to tread closer. And so he did, skittering through dried leaves and brittle twigs towards the sounds of twin voices spiralling eeriely up towards the blackened heavens. He saw it then, slitted pupils dilating to capture as much as the substance as he could muster. Eyes flickered back and forth as the light raced in a panic amongst the darkened ground, his shoulders slowly hunching to his ears with thought. Tanyll clacked his jaws softly, so softly, and crept closer to better see.
Tightly coiled not-muscle thrummed with subtle impatience until the dusty beam fell almost right in front of him. The kitsu leapt, paws lashing out in frenzy to slap at the flitting light that somehow managed to evade his blows. He hit the ground hard, beads cackling in his hair as he tumbled with the softest grunt of surprised. Bewildered now, Tanyll leapt to his feet and skittered to the side, glowing eyes wide as he better studied the two fleshy bodies before him. Yet, soon enough, he'd lost interest in their physical attributes and focused again on the light.
Where was it coming from? The source... He spotted it after a moment more of puzzling, skulking closer to the pale blonde with the strange object in his paws. A low rasp rumbled forth from his unused vocals, and the tattooed kitsu tilted his head, apathy sketched across his face. Still, he was intently focused upon the flashlight now, angling his body so the light could better strike his beads and send them shimmering.

The sound of the male swallowing hard could easily have been heard miles away by the frightening bands of monsters with ears larger then their heads, and teeth larger then their arms. Had Xerviree thought about this beforehand he would have keep quiet, bottled up all sounds within him and simply whispered to his sister, or perhaps just stared until she knew what he was saying. They were very close after all, such a thing wouldn't have taken too long.
Indeed, he had promised her. He was to get over his fear of the dark, of the monsters, so they'd hunt monsters in the dark and prove that there wasn't anything to be afraid of. It was easy to tell that this had not gone through his mind, that no matter what had been said and done, up to this point was taking any effect. "I know." he uttered softly, his head dipping down. Oh how he wished for moon's light to rain down upon them, but he knew that wasn't going to happen and the male simply gave a nod. "You're right. Fine..Yeah. But why does it hab to be so dark?"
Xerviree would not be getting an answer, or at least if he had recieved one he hadn't heard it. That creature that had floated out from the darkness only to stare at the pool of light created by his flashlight had caused such a stir in him that he droped Pib and lept into the air. It was an odd sight to see the male as he dashed behind his sister in attempts to 'keep safe', he was larger then she was and stuck out like a sore thumb. "Axis! Monysters! S-see!"

Indeed, Axis would know. It wasn't only that she was an empath, it was also the close sibling bond that they had. She knew him better than any one of her siblings. It was like how Xara depended on Xexilia to convey her feelings and thoughts to the others.
They had told Xerviree many times that there were no such monster in the dark and they were only part of his wild imagination. Ayako had tried to reassure him many times, but despite this, Ree still worried. And so did Axis herself.
Deep down inside she loved her brother as he was though.
"It's night time. Besides, it makes the stars come out." She didn't mention the moon. The moon was pretty, of course, but it was a source of worry in their family. "They wouldn't sparkle if the sun was shining." She raised her golden eyes to stare at the sky and smiled.
"Monsters?" She queried, head jerking in curiosity and blinked in confusion as she watched Ree scramble behind her. "Where..." Her voice died away as she spotted the other... then sighed. "Ree, it's just a stranger."
"Hello." She greeted, brown tails swishing in slight unease. She was a little bit afraid, but not as much as her brother. The squib usually stayed indoors after all, and didn't meet many other kitsusagi.

The big, pale beast that struck him with such familiarity unexpectedly leaped into the air, and the flickering light raced to slap the earth with equal frenzy. Startled, he nearly tripped over his tails in his haste to leap away, flattening his body to the earth. Eyes flickering like flame thanks to the flashlight, a wide grin stretched itself across his muzzle to bare razored teeth. He found no amusement in the situation--the kitsu was frightened, and this was the only way he knew how to express it. Subtle tremors quaked through lean muscle in preparation to flee should these prove to be hostile creatures, and Tanyll's ears flattened against his braided skull at the sounds the other creature was making.
Soft words fell upon his ears, encouraging the creature to slowly lift his head with an uneasy rattle of his jaws. They chattered amongst themselves for a moment more, grating sharpened fang until the noise was stilled by the dark, soft covering of his lips. Minutely shifting his paws, he slowly inhaled to better take in the twin scents; mingled fear and wariness, seeped with a sort of wrongness that forced him to tilt his head in scrutiny. The second was female (a fact that made him slowly shrink back down as though to duck away), and smelled of magics not unlike yet entirely different than those of the one he constantly trailed. Glowing eyes sought them both, flickering over the cloak that had been strewn across her body, and his calloused paws flexed again with curiosity.
This pair seemed to present no danger, only mysteries and things he sought to investigate more physically. A grating rasp issued deep in his throat by way of greeting, and Tanyll pushed himself to his feet in an unseen swell of confidence. With eyes suddenly half-lidded in apparent apathy and tattoos gleaming bright, he skulked closer to slowly circle the two. A paw would reach out on occasion to absently bat at different hued tails, and he was particularly intrigued with the stringy hair of the cringing male. At last, satisfied, he huffed softly and sat in front of them once more, peering with absent interest. Well? Would they do something interesting now?

Blonde hair tumbled down into the male's face as he gave a slight nod. Yes night, did bring out the stars and they were nice to look at, but there were very concerning matters that delt with stargazing. "But the monysters can get you while you watch the stars." Xerviree gave his nose a rub.
A very VERY concerning matter indeed.
He didn't want anyone he loved to be taken away by those monsters, and this newcomer monster, stranger person could do just that. Right when they weren't looking. "B-b-but..." his voice quivered, chocolate eyes remaining fixed upon the stranger. Just because he looked to be one of their species didn't mean that he wasn't a monster, those tricky creatures could disguise themselves. He had startled the stranger, but monsters could be startled...Couldn't they?
Ree could simply scrunch his body up and watch as the other moved closer towards both him and his sister. A strange sound had seemed to come from the stranger, though the paranoid blonde male had not reconized it as so, he did after all have a rather creepy smile. Slowly Xerviree streched out a gloved paw towards his fallen flashlight. If he could only get a hold of Pib then maybe he could use it to ward off this stranger, who at this point had begun to circle the two. Just a little closer-
A yelp quickly sounded from the wizard as the stranger batted at their tails every now and then, causing him to pull his paw back and away from Pib, pushing himself up against his sister in a desperate search for security. "It's! H-h-he's going to eat us!" Perhaps not, but monsters did tend to eat people, often. "You can tell b-by the wayb he's sitting there! Isn't that right Mr. Monyster..." A paw was waved towards Tanyll in an accusing like manner, though after all was said and done Xerviree couldn't help but sink down towards the ground trying to become hard to see.
