Captures the magic as well as melancholy of the lolita. I found this article ( as if it were not obvious ) on the Official website for Kamikaze Girls/Shimotsuma montagori/Shimotsuma story movie. Written by an exchange student/researcher turned lolita. http://www.kamikazegirls.net/culture.html#

Very nice, very interesting article. Rather than simply focusing on the style in a negative or positive light, the article deals with Gothic Lolita, particularly Sweet Lolita's place in society and the price that is sometimes paid for an unusual clothing style/lifestyle. Excellent. Thank you very much for posting this article. Quote: These lolita acted normally, giggling and shouting cheerfully along with their friends, and no one used the formal speech style some lolita magazines advocate. Basically, they appeared to be normal teenagers, talking to their friends and completely oblivious to their surroundings. Once I started speaking very formally, not for Gothic Lolita related purposes, but just for the heck of it, and my best friend told me not to use big words. So that lasted a day. XD For the longest time I an infaturation with 18th century France. I wished I could be in that time until I realised I would probably have my head cut off by someone. I need to see this movie.

So what does the genral populace of the guild think? Are people who make their own cloths stillc onsidered Lolita, though they don't buy name-brand cloths? I mean I personally think someone who makes their owns cloths is more Lolita (through all the detication and hard work it takes to make the cloths) than someone who just plops down oodles of mommy and daddy's money for their expensive name-brand things..

And really neither should be looked down upon. Edit- I'm purchashing a name brand dress, its not mommy and daddies money, and i'm making a dress at the same rate... if you notice most american lolitas over the age of 16 dont get mommie and daddie's money for things like that.

I know that in Japan you're held in high regard if you can make your own stuff, but it's not a case of making you more or less lolita - you're just respected for it.
My method tends to be much the same as maeanalda - you find what looks good, within your budget. It shouldn't become anything at all competitive - there are few enough of us around as it is, without dividing the subculture with arguements over what is more lolita.

Edit- I'm purchashing a name brand dress, its not mommy and daddies money, and i'm making a dress at the same rate... if you notice most american lolitas over the age of 16 dont get mommie and daddie's money for things like that. First off just let me say I don't descriminate against Lolitas for where they get their clothing. I personally can't really afford BSSB and etc (seeing as my parents are not supportive of my wearing Lolita, nor the price tags for such clothing, I am usually forced to make my own, or buy dress-clothing type things at the store and modify them). I just noticed this in the article, and wanted to see what people thought about it: Quote: However, in order to be accepted by other lolita as a lolita, mostly all will agree a girl, and occasional a boy, needs to wear lolita brand clothing. I personally don't think that's what Lolita should be about either, but it would appear that that is the general mind-set in Japan. I never said that is how all people get their money for name brand stuff, however I don't really see how many people who aren't even out of high school and can't get full-time jobs can really afford $200 dresses and things otherwise, and the article even goes on to say: Quote: For ama-lolita whose parents support their fashion cost is not often a problem, but for others who have to pay themselves it is a hard task. But comparing someone who does just ask their parents for money, versus someone who has to take hours to make their own. I think it shows a bit more detication, ne? Black Ayesha I know that in Japan you're held in high regard if you can make your own stuff, but it's not a case of making you more or less lolita - you're just respected for it. My method tends to be much the same as maeanalda - you find what looks good, within your budget. It shouldn't become anything at all competitive - there are few enough of us around as it is, without dividing the subculture with arguements over what is more lolita. Again, I was just questioning other people about their opinions on that passage form the article. Although it did say something about being somewhat respected if you make your own cloths (but personally, that's the way I see it to some degree, I have more respect for people who make their own), it did say in Japan you're not even considered a Lolita unless you buy name-brand Loli clothing. One can only assume that means people who make their own cloths aren't very highly regaurded in the Loli community. I don't think Loli should be about competition over who can buy more expensive name-brand things either (god knows we have enough of that in so many other circles), but later in this article, it did go on to say: Quote: ...while others use the style to assert that the are wealthier and cuter than other lolita. It is people like this I was referring to when I said,"...than someone who just plops down oodles of mommy and daddy's money for their expensive name-brand things.." People who dress Loli not because they're truely deticated to it, but because they like to show off that they can buy name-brand things.
