Can anybody give me any information on/pictures of Pele's digging stick, which I think is named "Pāoa"?
I'm writing a sci-fi/fantasy story that has a few Hawaiian characters in it (though they technically aren't Hawaiian, because the story doesn't take place on Earth. I named the island they came from "Lo'ihi"
smile ). One of them is a girl named 'Ihilani 'Aukai who uses volcano-based magic. I was trying to come up with a weapon for her to fight with, and I think it'd be really cool if she used Pele's digging stick (or a regular digging stick with the same name) as her weapon.
Problem is, I have no idea what a Hawaiian digging stick looks like! Is it just a stick, or is it carved in a specific way? And if I wanted to decorate it with carvings, what kind of design would be appropriate? Any other information on anything about it would be great. I'm a stickler for accuracy...
I want to know what it looks like because I'm planning on drawing a picture with her holding it.
Here's an older picture of the character. She's a Sonic The Hedgehog styled furry (though it's not a Sonic story, I've just been a fan of Sonic forever so I got used to drawing characters that look like them...)
