 - The Kink of Nurse Laceyif you can't grab it from there because of gaia's redirect system, you can get it from going through mess studio's forum: - Mess Studioa 35-second animated short that josh and i finally completed within five/six weeks in order to present this morning for my final. it's still a little on the rough side, and i would like to refine it a bit more before putting it out for my demo reel next quarter when i finally graduate. but here is the finshed product...i'm actually surprised that i pretty much stuck with the animatic and didn't stray very far from the initial concept. kirbyUFO aka the boyfriend so sporky handled most of the character animation, and i handled most of the technical bits. we ended up rendering with mental ray, final gather, raytraced reflections, and some shots actually use the physical depth of field lens and motion blur. all of those effects eat up rendering time like you wouldn't believe, so it took us probably a good week of combined time with our computers just churning out a frame every 15 minutes, even with relatively low quality settings. other fun technical morsels!: i set up soft body dynamics on her hair, the curtain at the end, and of course her boobies. it calculates all that bouncing springy-ness once the animation is done, so the animator doesn't really have to worry about keyframing a lot of secondary movement. we did a super rush job on the compositing! all in one night, about 5 hours (including after effects render time) because the mental ray renders took so damned long to pump out during the week. the actual resolution is at ntsc, but we compressed the quicktime down to 480x360 for your downloading convenience the champagne bottle and all the other crap falling from the sky was done with rigid body dynamics, which were a pain in the a** to try to control at times, but end up giving pretty realistic motion. the pillow flying off the gurney too =) once we have the time we're going to re-render with motion blur on all of the frames instead of just some. it's probably the single biggest increase in render time, so we had to cut it out of a lot of important stuff, particularly the rigid body dynamics. hmmm, that's all i can think of for now. wish i could brag about the character rig but it's really quite rudimentary and a bit clunky =)

I can see you've really outdone yourself here. The character design is solid, and I was most impressed with the intro screen at the beginning, as well as the ones near the end. They give the piece a really professional touch.
I am a person who is very sensitive to camera movements; camera movements that are too fast hurt my head, so I notice them pretty easily. I think the first few shots of the film - where it's switching between Nurse Lacey's body parts - are too fast, they make a little pain behind my eyes. The items falling out of the sky look great, but I think they may also be a little fast. However, a little farther into the animation, things all become very smooth and easy to watch.
Aside from the fast camera at the beginning, I'm not sure if it's the lip synch or what, but it doesn't look like she's actually singing the song.
Great, great work aside from that. I'm serious. I love the solid feel of the character and how you really gave her an environment that suits her. I think the computer/television monitor is a good example of that.

I think the computer/television monitor is a good example of that. thanks for pointing out the camera movements...since my instructor didn't critique me on that, only on the character animation. the switching between her body parts was intentionally fast in order to fit with the beat, but i can see how it may seem a little to fast. do you think that it's something i can fix with editing the timing or the 3D work itself? maybe adding some motion blur inbetween the cuts or something so it doesn't feel as jarring? and for the stuff falling from the sky...i can look into it. they were done using rigid body dynamics so they weren't animated by hand. but if it looks too weird or fast i could always try animating it manually. i guess the only difficult thing is having everything fit within the limitations and timing of the music...so i'm wondering that if i slow down the objects if it'd interefere with the whole feel of it? i like the points you provided, since these are things that i want to eventually polish up. it's my first real serious endeavor into 3d animation in where i actually did most of the char. animation and camera animation (instead of my usual behind the scenes directing), so it kinda helps to get a feel for what looks right and what doesn't.

Hm. Here's a thought - I wouldn't want you to screw up the timing, but when I watch the animation, it looks like with the quick camera cuts, it's the cuts themselves that are timed, less than the body movements of the character. I am not sure how much reworking this would require - but I think it would be less jarring if the body movements were focused on more for timing than the cuts of the camera. For instance - if the objects falling hit exactly at the beat, in a rather obvious way, perhaps it would be less lifelike - I don't know if you wanna go down that path - but it would be less visually confusing to me, personally. And timing Nurse Lacey's body movements to the beat as opposed to just the camera cuts shouldn't be unnatural, I don't think. I don't know if that would completely fix the problem of the camera cuts being fast, it might just be that I'm sensitive to it. It would be best to get a second opinion before doing anything major.

From the mouth of the Goat: Goat Consider telling her that at that beginning shot, the step is stepped. It looks bad, like the animation missed a frame. Also, her hair goes through the ground and her nurse costume goes through her leg. When I asked what he meant by "the step is stepped", he responded: Goat That's called a stepped tangent.Where there is no transition between two keyframes.

is there anyway to DL the file? Both links require me to play the file in my internet browser, which i'm not capable of doing.

yeah you can just right click and save as...although i'd recommend it more at the mess studio link because of the gaia redirect thingy. sorry for not clarifiying that, page boy! the iconoclast From the mouth of the Goat: Goat Wrote: Consider telling her that at that beginning shot, the step is stepped. Okay. I actually tried to do that in the first place, but i guess i just assumed the "save target..." option wasn't there because i missed it in french. wow, it's just. really great. i feel a little out of my league XD. it's hard to provide eedback other than personal opinion. i think i prefer things a little slower paced. I had to watch this several just to absorb all the details.

I had to watch this several just to absorb all the details. i understand about it being a little too much information for the short amount of time...and one of the things i can probably do is maybe make scenes longer and cutting up the music so it can cater to the timing. i also may go to the opposite route and maybe push the 'in your face' feel to it by adding more post effects to the rendered scenes to give it more of that music video kind of feel (like the title shot).

hmm no matter which way I try to watch it, it's saying there is a problem with the codex and stops. Is anyone else having a problem?
