The wilderness was deathly quiet as the sun began its decent towards the horizon. Despite quite a few attempts, a pair of pointed black ears failed to detect even the slightest noise from below. High in a dead tree, a chiefly black griffin made his perch. The red feathers on his chest rose and fell as he heaved a loud sigh. The large male moved to the end of the branch and scanned the area in front of him, but his eyes were just as unsuccessful as his ears had been. His long tail swayed down below him as he gave up, shaking his head a few times. 'I knew this would happen,' he thought to himself. Deciding to hunt this late in the day was a mistake that he would not make again. Still, it wouldn't be long until nightfall. Until then, he decided, he would wait on his perch. Nighttime flights were always a relaxing break from his usual mundane existance.

Tiber turned his red eyes towards the horizon for a moment, taking in the various colors of the sunset. While many would choose to enjoy the scenery, this griffin did not seem impressed. Instead, he stretched his wings and turned around, choosing not to stare at the spectacle for long. As his wings were warmed, he let out another, albeit lighter, sigh. "It is going to be a long night," he whispered quietly.

Esen's eyes glances down as she smoothly glided down, her strong wings outstretched as far as she could bring them. The sun's brilliant rays grasped onto edge of the feathers, changing its navyish color to a more red look that matched the sky.

Bored.

Bored... It was who Esen was. Everything seemed to bore her! The sky iis boring, the clouds are boring, the view is boring, talking is boring... Even life felt boring to her. Going through it, day after day! Why did nothing seem to have excitement for her? Her eyes flickered to the northern view ahead of her-where she was headed.

And there was a sillohuete perched on a tree. HER tree. She squinted her eyes, anger crossing her face at the figure, perched in a position that made it look prideful... What Esen would consider a prideful position anyway. Who WAS that? Why were they there, on her tree, her territory, her home? Her course was set direct to it; she landed on a branch several feet away from the griffin in moments. She glared at the male. "Why are you on my tree, my territory? Who are you?" Her voice was thick with anger, her blue eyes fierce, cold, and sharp.

Tiber folded his wings back to his sides, his facial expression listless, almost emotionless, despite the other griffin's outburst. His own half-closed crimson eyes locked onto Esen's blue ones as he opened his beak and began to speak, "I did not know that this 'territory,' as you call it, was claimed. And I especially didn't expect for it to be owned by such an overly emotional griffin such as yourself. Pray tell, why do you care so much? It isn't as if there is any food to have stolen, nor any shade to covet... It is a temporary perch to me. Nothing more, nothing less."
Of course, he really did have an inkling as to why she may have been upset. There were so few open territories these days that were inhabitable that even one such as this could be guarded like a treasure. And even further, she might just have a possessive personality. Still, an argument may or may not alleviate the deafining quiet that always seemed to shadow him. As senseless as it was, fighting (or plain, reasonable talking, if that was to happen) was something that he could use to pass the time.

Ske kept a stern expression, though she felt weakened on the inside. Why DID she care? Maybe she said something just to start talking, just to find excitement in her boring, not very exciting life...

She outstretched her wings and squeaked. "And why do you even want to know? I just simply like that branch. It's set in a spot that is easy for me to locate things. Plus, it's better to have something to sit on that you can call your own instead of nothing," she responded, calming herself down slightly so she wasn't snapping at him anymore. "Afterall, you said you were using it as a temporary perch. I could consider it my permanent perch." Esen huffed. She didn't want him to leave in a way... She wanted-practically needed-someone to keep her company, even if it was for a while.

"You think it's better to own something than not? I beg to differ. If you claim no posessions, then you have nothing for others to steal. It makes life much simpler..." Tiber sighed and rolled his eyes. Her tone may have changed, but the message was the same. Not that it really mattered much. "But, you enjoy this branch so much? Then, have it," he grumbled. The griffin spread his wings and jumped down to the ground, grasping his paws around a dead limb that had somehow become detatched from the tree. It wasn't so high up, but it was better than sitting on the bare soil.
'Why do I stay?' he wondered to himself as he folded his wings back to his sides and glanced back up to the female. It was true that Tiber didn't particularly want to leave either, due to boredom. But, he was apparently intruding, and such a thing was normally against his usual behavior... Against his better judgement, though, he decided against moving on quite yet. "It doesn't happen to bother you if I remain down here until nightfall, hm?"

He had made her standing on the subject quiver. She clicked her beak and grunted. "Well, if you look at it that way..." she muttered, hoping he didn't even here her. He probably did...Oh well. Esen glared at him, watching him below her. "I don't care. Do whatever you wish," she said, sighing. She transferred spots, leaving the tree she was on to relax on 'her' tree. She folded her wings, tucking them against her sides and sighed heavily. She felt her eyelids droop down; now she could only rely on her sense of hearing.

Tiber echoed the female's sigh as he bore down on the fallen branch, his claws scraping against the rough, brittle bark. After a few seconds of quiet he softly requested, "If you have something to say, then please do finish your thought. Your breath would otherwise be wasted." The griffin flickered his eyes upwards to Esen, taking in during that brief moment her strange head crest, furless legs, and small fangs. They shared the same basic mutation, but she was still considerably different from him. 'Interesting enough,' he thought silently to himself as his half-lidded eyes returned to their watch for any sign of movement in the grasses.

"No, I don't. Just ignore me," she responded angrily. He flicked an eyelid up, allowing herself to look at Tiber for a secong before closing it again. She turned her feet around, changing the direction she was facing so she didn't have to look at the male griffin. "By the way, my name is Esen. Don't think I said it," she muttered. She was unsure why she told him her name.... Proper manners she retorted to herself. Whatever. He'd probably leave soon and they would never meet again. She didnt care.

Ignore her? Oh, Tiber would have none of that... Rudeness was not a trait that he was willing to adopt. Her angered tone failed to put him off in the least, and his dull stare remained steadily fixed ahead of him. An ear slowly raised as a few blades of grass moved, but a moment's stillness caused him to lower it again. If the shift occurred once more, he decided, then it would warrant further attention.
"My name is Tiber," he said finally, his voice little more than a whisper. "Pleasure to make your acquantaince, I suppose..."

Rustle.

Tiber's wings swung into the air as the movement resumed, and in an instant he was upon the small creature that made it. Pinned below one of his black paws was a small ball of fluff, antlers jabbing repeatedly in the direction of his flesh. The Jackalope was in such a position that it couldn't hit him, no matter how hard it tried to swing its head back. Barely thinking about the suffering the small animal was going through, Tiber watched it with his unenthusiastic gaze, his pointed ears picking up every shrill whine. The nagging silence was broken, however, and this was enough to keep him from finishing the deed. No sadistic grin curled upon his beak, and no laughter rumbled from his chest; his ears merely shifted towards the Jackalope, absorbing the cries for mercy like a pair of furry, black sponges.

Esen clucked her beak, clearly not satisfied. Tiber? It was a strange name, though very fitting. Pleasure to meet..? Yeah. Riight. She shifted, her long, thin legs becoming slightly uncomfortable. The screeching of the jackalope pierced the air; Esen stayed silent and still, feeling partially content to not have to talk with the other griffin for the time being while the prey occupied their conversation. Eyes fixing themselves upon the jackalope, she felt a ravenous hunger sweep over her. Perhaps I should go eat too... she thought, mildly surprised at her sudden appetite.

Enough.

Tiber crained his neck down to his small, furry victim, savoring the last few wheezing screeches that it would ever utter. Then, with a single, swiping blow, he jammed one of his fangs into the jugular and ended its suffering. Not bothering to look down at the blood, Tiber raised his head, silence once more ringing like a shrill alarm in his ears. His eyes sauntered slowly back to his female company as one of his furry feet pushed the prey forward. "It may be my kill, but if these lands are yours," he sighed, "then I suppose that you lay claim to half of this... Hm?" This Esen, silent though she was, seemed displeased in some way. Honestly not surprised, he at least wanted to make it clear that he was not really attempting to make an enemy. If she accepted the gift as he had offered it, then they wouldsplit it down the middle. If not, then Tiber would simply eat it on his own. An attempt at peacemaking had been made, and that was all one could expect in a world like this.
