User Image She stared at her own reflection in the water, deja vu? But unlike that time only a few months ago, she was actually inspecting her latest additions. The wind played with the blue and green feather that was tucked behind her ear. She finally had something similar to her father's feathers and even had his and 'Suli's attached to her rump.

She took a few careful steps away from the water's edge, listening to the jingling sound her bangles created with the movement. What a peaceful sound. She may not be on good terms with her family currently, but that didn't mean she loved them any less. She glanced down at her hooves, focusing on the front with the feather and bangle, another mixed symbol of her parents' love like her own body.

And heavens! There were more of them on the way! Probably already born and placed carefully in the basket. Did her parents even think about what heckling would follow for their love? They were being so selfish, blinded by their love.

She stomped her hoof firmly on the ground in her agitation and saw a vision of her sister's face. None of them understood! None of them would ever understand! Only one other understood what she felt, what it was like. Her cyan gaze scanned the area for that bit of red, that flash of gold to come speeding across the plains. Would he show up here eventually?

He had only recently returned to the familiarity of his home lands, had only shortly been reacquainted with the woods. Oh, the red and orange stallion was high on cloud nine; he had been gone for such a very long time and yet it had only been at the end of his trip that he had discovered the most magnificent treasure. . .

Nivriti.

The male could hardly believe his great fortune; yes, he'd met many a mare in his time and had made friendships with quite a few. But there had been something different about the cream and brown furred one; she had somehow managed to capture his heart with her games and almost shy temper. She had somehow been just as mesmorized and captivated as he her, and miraculously had admitted such feelings!

They were now a pair. . .a couple. . . mates, if you would, though he still took their relationship rather delicately. Though their bond had only grown during their journey together, though he only seemed to grow fonder and fonder for brown furred mare, he quietly feared making a mistake. He'd never been in such a serious relationship before; hell, he flirted with many a mare but he'd never let one get so close so fast!

Still, life had a funny way of throwing curves, and strangely enough yet another one would be found. He had left Nivriti in the small grove within the foothills not far from where he roamed. Water from the mountains was everywhere, and therefor it was no surprise he soon came across a different pool.

Two ears twitched at the sound of bangles, alerting him to another's presence nearby. Little concerned (he was a big boy, he could easily handle himself) the stallion pushed his way confidently through the underbrush only to pause an do a double take. First and foremost he caught the scent of one that danced upon the fringes of his memory - it was a mare, but it surely wasn't Nivriti nor was it Caely. . . . No, this one was. . . .had to be . . . . "Vidia?!" He asked, openly gaping at the dark nosed mare.

Sure enough, across from the waters edge, he saw a pale mare; but this one jingled and head fathers in her hair! She was quite done up from what he last remembered and yet . . . . here. . . here she was! The shock and surprise in his features was obviously before he remembered his manners. Laughing in good humor, the stallion offered the lady a gentlemanly bow, red tail swishing behind him. "My oh my, if it isn't the lady fair~!"

She tossed her head happily and turned in a small circle for him to get the entire look, the red, tan, and white feathers danced lightly on the wind with the movement. Aside from the new accessories, there seemed to be a new air to the young mare. "Do you like it, Althalus," she asked with a coy smile.

Oh skies, she could feel her heart pick up speed when she finally settled herself to face him. A love-struck yearling was exactly what she was and she hid her face with the long pale lengths of her mane.

When she finally had herself under control, she struck up conversation of how she'd been doing since they'd last met.
"I-I was hoping to see you sooner, b-but I spent some time with my m-mother. I-I took your words to heart," she paused and looked away from him, the memories of the last time she'd seen her mother and sister still fresh in her mind's eye. "I will have brothers and sisters soon," she said bitterly.

Althalus was pleased to see that the coy and broken spirited mare he had met before had begun to blossom. She didn't seem nearly so fragile and he was glad to see her pleasure at meeting him once again. Oh, he hoped the pale mare and he might have struck up the beginnings of a good friendship. . . .

She made him miss Caelyndei and Aiolos something fierce; how long had it been since he'd last seen the duo? Too long, that was for certain! Ah, but perhaps he might bump in to them now that he was settled and home. He had much to tell them about, such news, and to find out how they faired! But for now, he had Vidia to focus on; his delicate friend from before his journeys.

"You look dazzling, m'dear; absolutely radiant!" And wasn't that the truth! The mare had certainly brightened considerably in both her attitude and her looks; with the feathers in her hair and the jinglies upon her hooves, the young stallion couldn't help but be tickled pink! She mentioned seeing her mother, having taken his words to heart, and that pleased the stallion.

Hopefully his kindness had helped her find herself. . . . But oh how oblivious Althalus was. He couldn't possibly know that the mare was foolish enough to read too deep in to his words. Oooh, but despite visiting her mother it seemed as if the news was poor. . . or more poorly taken considering the harshness entering her words.

"Brothers and sisters are a blessing," he gently chastised, hoping to remind her of all the joy they could bring. "You'll be an elder sister, able to care for them and guide them as they grow. . . Truly you can't still hang on to the bitterness of what that one wind said?" Foals were a blessing, especially if created out of love. Her parents seemed to harbor a great love for one another, from what he remembered, assuming they were still together. So what was the problem?

Did she not want her family to grow?
PostPosted: Sun Aug 03, 2008 2:43 pm

She made a face, thankful she'd turned away from him. She wasn't happy with the prospect that they'd grow up without their father around and the ridicule of being halflings. "Not really, but I don't want them to grow up the way I did." It was the truth, but secretly, she worried that her father's genes would be the strongest and they'd be able to soar the skies and leave her alone with just mother.

Well, there was 'Suli. She'd come back while mother was with child and now they were attached at the hip. Vidia had been cast off to the side, unintentionally, and was left hurting. So the family troubles had only gotten worse and erupted into her final fight with her older sister and leaving the family grounds.

But enough about her. She finally looked over at him with a smile.
"What have you been up to over the months, Althalus?"

Althalus gave a little nod at the pale mares words, able to understand her concern and perhaps even a bit of her bitterness. He had been brought up in a loving family, and a large one at that, even if they all were nothing but a bunch of 'halflings'. Grencia often took to the skies but he had always taken time out for his family. Althalus never felt as if he'd lacked in a father figure within is life, nor that he could never seek out his father if such a thing was needed.

Still, the sunset stallion tried his best to understand. "You must remember though that these foals will have something in their lives that you did not; where you had only your mother and the ground, these foals now have older siblings to look up to. You can help shape and mold their worlds, remember." Altahlus was a brother but he wasn't an older sibling. He had hopes that someday he might get to play the role but it wasn't up to him . . . .

Furthermore, he had other things that had captured his attention. Things that weren't made up of gangly legged foals but of brown and cream fur and feathers. . . . That was where his time was now solely devoted to. It still amazed him that such a thing had happened, that his heart could be swooped up and captured so firmly but maybe it was why he had traveled.

The spirits had lead him away from his home and guided him straight to her. . . .

Pricking his ears, the stallion remembered himself and gave a small chuckle and shrug. "Oh, I've explored the world after parting with you. My hooves took me weeks away and I met many a new face and learneda great many things. It was a lovely adventure with a great many beautiful things found along the way . . . . but," he added with a wistful sigh, "I am quite pleased to be home."

It was ironic that he would find peace with his return and she'd only felt anguish. Her face gave away to the underlining sadness that was deep in her heart, the portion of it that was reserved for just family matters. She shook her head as if to ignore the matters that she wasn't ready to resolve just yet back home. That problem would be solved in all due time.

"Tell me where you went, what did you see?" She was genuinely curious because she didn't get to travel very far from home when she was younger and this was the first time she'd been away for many, many moons. Someone had to stay by their mother's side so she wouldn't get lonely. She knew that Ever would miss her mate terribly while he was gone, but the companionship of her daughter over the winter and now summer had helped ignore the pain.

She was exceedingly jealous of her older sister for getting to see the world and then take her place like no time had passed. It just wasn't fair.
"I was wondering what you had been up over the months."

It pained Althalus to see the sadness within her gaze, the hurt. No mare should ever feel so overwhelmed or broken, no mare should ever cross such an expression. Mares were meant to be treasured and cherished and overall cared for and adored; they were a class all their own and one Althalus could appreciate.

Vidia deserved to find happiness. . . .

A shame he didn't realize just how much he'd hurt the mare.

"I travelled far and wide," he answered lazily, his long red tail swishing behind him. "I saw the mountains covered in snow even in the middle of summer; I saw the ocean and watched as the sky met the sea. I saw plains of gold with the most unusual flowers. Oh Vidia, the places I've been and the sights I've viewed were wonderful. . .

Even if they don't quite compare to home."

To Althalus that was indeed the truth. Though he had found many a great things within his journy there was something about home with his sibling and parents that warmed his heart. He had missed his old stomping grounds, his old friends, and still wondered what Caely and Aiolos might be up to.

"Ah, but my friend, perhaps you can share in some of my joy. I did find one treasure that stood our more than most. I found perhaps beauty incarnate, and one that has managed to steal my heart like none other I found, while I was away, the heart of my heart and the love of my life. . . A mare, named Nivriti." His silver eyes glowed with a warmth unhindered, his thoughts drifting for a moment as he thought of his most beloved lady.

She always thought herself plain but Althalus found her exceptionally and hauntingly gorgeous. Nothing would ever change that.

"I didn't realize it was she whom I had spent my years wandeirng searching for; I didn't realize it was she that was the reason I strayed." Oh, he was rambling but it was so hard not to! He would sing Nivriti's praises if he didn't think she'd turn a permanant shade of pink. But Vidia was his friend so he was certain she might forgive his giddyness. She could at least appreciate his happiness. . . couldn't she?

"I'm sorry m'lady; it's rude of me to goad on as I'm doing but it's still so new and wonderful. . . You're the first, outside of my mother, to whom I can share such news! Perhaps someday I might be honored to introduce my lady to you, my friend." Althalus had little idea that this news might not sit so well with Vidia.

But oh he was soon to find out.

She listened intently as he painted a picture for her of each place he had visited. When he spoke of sharing in his joy, she instantly thought that he would have her journey with him, until she heard that he was smitten with another mare. She felt her heart break--a clean break.

Althalus had found someone and it wasn't her. She had been deluding herself in believing he would be the one for her and she'd been wrong. What was worse to her was that he said such flattering words that truly had no substance behind them, or so she believed. Why say such nice things if all they will be is just words?

The rest of his speech fell on deaf ears and she took a step back from the river's edge. What could she say? What could she do? She'd set herself up for the fall, but she wasn't entirely at fault, was she?
"I'm happy for you," she finally said, not quite looking at the sunset stallion. "She must be very beautiful to have caught your eye."

So flattered and smitten with thoughts of Nivriti that the sunset male almost didn't notice the small and subtle shift in her body language; he couldn't possibly know or understand the depths of her feelings for him and furthermore couldn't begin to believe that she might have 'loved' him from their first meeting!

Oh, he believed in love at first sight, certainly; Nivriti had all but swooped up his heart from the moment he saw her grace over the waters. Strange and a bit ironic that another mare had believed him to be their champion long before. . . .

A shame things didn't necessarily work the way a soquili might hope.

"Ah, Vidia," he sighed, stepping up to the edge of the lake beside her, casting his silver eyes down in to the cool pool of water. Sunset orange blurred next to a soft cream; seeing her beside him made him wish Aiolos and Caelyndei might be near so he good tell them of his fabulous fortune. All in due time, of course. "Though I've met and gazed upon many a gorgeous mare, pardon my admittance, but she must go unrivaled. It's not just her figure, o'course, that makes her so lovely - it's her heart and soul that draws me. Oh, I do hope the two of you might meet, might become fast friends."

Again, how little and foolish the stallion was. He couldn't possibly know of the hurt his every word might cause Vidia, could never know the damage his hope might bring. If only he hadn't admitted such a joy to the mare, if only he had kept to his own business perhaps Vidia might have been spared longer from the hurt.

Ah, but every story was in need of a good ending and the longer she waited for Althalus the more bitter she might become when he strayed. His heart was not to be hers; his heart was solely for Nivriti.

"When I saw her fall from the sky, when she swooped down upon her feathered wings with such grace, I knew then and there that she had been the treasure I had longed to seek out. She was the reason I strayed so far from home, she was the reason for my everything." Perhaps it was in poor taste to gush over his mate but he was young and new in love. He had yet to find his closest friends and outside of his mother had no one else to speak so to; Vidia was a friend of his and one he hoped to keep near and dear. . . .

Yes, Althalus' heart wanted to sing, but since it could not it allowed hi ma moments need to speak openly and freely about Nivriti to the only friend he had around. He couldn't hold back any longer, and it was thoughtlessness that let the mare know that his love was indeed a wind.

PostPosted: Tue Sep 09, 2008 8:12 pm

And there is was, the finally axe to fall on her heart. She was a Wind! A wind! She had wings where Vidia did not. All of the words Althalus ever said to her now sounded so false, just fluffy flaky drivel to try and get a mare away from a ledge. He didn't see her as more because she didn't have wings. She was grounded just like him with siblings and a parent who had the extra appendages, why would he want something else that was chained to the ground when the heart soared on high?

She physically turned away from him. She didn't want him to see the tears that were threatening to fall. She didn't want to say everything that she kept bottled up inside. She didn't want to make a fool of herself. She knew better than that. She couldn't even give him the chance to pry. She had to get away, to fly as far from him as she could.

And that was just what she did. She felt her body moving, but didn't remember her mind ordering it. She wasn't even sure if she had kept the tears in check as she ran away from Althalus, ran away from the pain blindly. She just had to get away!

[-And I think that's FIN.-]
