 Sumi-e walked carefully along the bank of the river, slinking along the soft grass in the shadows of the evening more like some sort of cat than a horse. The sun has just recently set, giving Sumi-e the cover of shadows he preferred when he left the dense undergrowth of thickets where his herd called home. He hadn't been out of the tickets for weeks now since Dahlia had her foals. He considered himself the protector of their small herd-in-the-making and he had taken looking after the new babies as a personal badge of responsibility.
But the foals were growing even faster than he could keep up with, and Sequoyah and Dahlia had insisted that the sentential take some time for himself. They didn't seem to understand that he was content where he was, but they eventually convinced him that he should get out. When he finally thought he was alone, he lowered his head to drink from the river. He thought he heard something from the distance, and ears swiveling around he searched around for someone else. His eyes glew dimly in the fading light, scanning the treeline.

The sun and the mare had never been the best of friends really, only in the company and security of her family would she ever see the light of day. Otherwise she stuck to the comforting darkness of the night, waiting till the 'normals' lay sleeping in their beds before she could venture out into the world. Too many times had she made the mistake as a foal to bask in the warmth of the sun, leading only to heartache and misery as the was teased and bullied by those who did not understand being different. Such a hard learned lesson had remained with the misfit mare into her young adult life.
Yet tonight was a bit different; as she'd stumbled upon something which caught her attention. It was by far the most amazing thing she'd seen to date....someone who looked just as much as a freak as she! In reality she couldn't take her eyes off what she decided was a stallion; even in the dimming light she could easily make out those four ruby eyes, and the gravity defying fur that curled and stood like they'd been painted on! She'd observed him for a bit amongst the shadowed foliage, silent and curious untill she took notice that he must have sensed her presence; his head and eyes scouting for her location.
Timid thoughts rose in her mind, and the temptation to vanish back into the twilight eve was tempting....but if she started running away from every thing that startled her; she'd get no where! Taking a deep breath, the young mare pushed her frame through the bushes and into the pale light of the rising moon. Slowly her spiked tail swayed behind her ivory body; peering out through the kalona skull mask with soft sapphire irises. "Hello..." she called out, finding it the best introduction anyways.

Sumi'e poised himself as the intruder in the treeline came forward. He thrust his chest forward and bared his teeth, his four eyes blazing momentarily. But as the figure came into view his posture changed. His eyes softened as the smooth lines of a slim mare came out. She was... amazing. Wholly unlike any other he had seen the mare's white coat contracted against hair the color of blood. She wore a mask of some sort (or so he assumed it was a mask), had a line of horns protruding down her face. She was beautiful, horrific, ghostly, and Sumi-e just stopped and stared for a moment.
When she called out to him, it shook him from his trance, and he looked behind him, unbelieving she was addressing him. When he realized he was the only one there, the muscles in his legs twitched. If this was any other outsider addressing him he would run... but the entrancing otherworldliness of the other being kept him planted, and for once in his life he felt his curiosity getting the better of him. He didn't respond back, Sumi-e was not very comfortable with words, but he stayed where he was and tried his best to look non-threatening.

Minuet stayed put, her own hooves planted on the ground while her eyes watched carefully the actions of the stallion before her. At first he seemed to be guarded; drawing forth an intimidating stance like she too usually assumed when anything her size came close. However she was pleased and a bit relieved that he calmed down, his firce expression melting away almost as fast as it came. Such fangs too! He looked not to be a Kalona or Skinwalker...so instantly she wondered where those canines had come from in his heritage.
So she waited and listened....and listened....and listened. The young mare even craned her head forwards to see if maybe he was speaking quietly...not no. He had yet to say a single word and that unnerved her slightly. Could he not speak? Perhaps he was too good to speak to her? Oh the infinate question's she could wrap her mind around, yet if she continued down that path she'd be a nervous wreak! It wasn't everyday that she came upon someone who was as uniquely made as she...and as she kept reminding herself of that she slowly began to walk towards him.
"Im...sorry. If you cannot talk just....uhh....nodd your head?" God what a horrible first impression that must have been; she'd not even considered that maybe he was mute! She stopped a few feet infront of him though; respecting his space as she watched, trying as well not to seem so intimidating as she might have looked.

The other one had not run away. She stood there patiently, her vicious tail swaying slightly behind her. She leaned her head forward, and when spoke again he snorted and shook his mane, a bit taken aback by her inquiry. "I can talk," he finally said after a moment. His voice was deep and unsure. He shifted on his hooves uncomfortably, he was not used to introductions.
Finally after an unforgettable moment he cleared his throat with a rumble. "Sumi-e." He looked her over again, his eyes drawn to her tail, her hair... finally fixing on her sapphire eyes. "Er, my name that is. Is Sumi-e." That's what you were supposed to do, right? Start with names.

...Or she could be completely wrong! "Oh!" She fussed slightly, feeling her face flush...how did her sisters do it; be so calm and carefree? Minuet was sure she was heading for an heart attack before she even reached her prime with the amount of stress she allowed herself to get into. "I'm sorry...Im usually not so...weird and nervous I guess." The mare gave her shoulders a light shrug, somehow not feeling so terribly bad that at least he too was seeming to be a bit uncomfortable.
Yet she was in for a bit of a suprise when her ears perked to catch his rumbling vocals. Sumi-e? Oh! That was is name! How strange, it almost sounded foreign compared to some of the native and object kind of names out there. Luckily; he didn't seem to be threatening or mean...so the mare let a smile cross on her lips. "Sumi-e huh? Well its nice to meet ya!" She really didn't mean to be so well, blunt, but if she didn't just blurt it out it would nag at her mind till she did!
"Well....its plain to see that we're both not normal...and well....what are you? I've never seen anyone with fur like yours and well, those eyes!"

Sumi-e tried to relax, but didn't seem to be doing a good job of it. Partially due to his fur, which always gave him the expression of being poised, but also due to his complete lack of social graces. "What am I?" he repeated, his voice low. "I... I do not know," he said, "I was born like this. Neither of my parents looks any different than any other soquili I have ever met."
He shifted again and cleared his throat. That was the most words he's said in a row since he was a foal. "What is... your name?"

Didn't know? Goodness, she never expected that! Perhaps this stallion didn't get out much? Already she found herself curious if he knew of Kalona, Skinwalkers and the such. Or...perhaps he was enlightened that all Soquili are essentially the same...was it she who was the one who only saw others by their appearance! God the shame! ...wait...there she went off again! Damn, she needed to stop doing that.
Taking a calming breath, she tried to remain as sane as she could for the poor stallion before her. He came off as a bit shy, or even reserved since he wasn't much of a conversationalist like the others she'd come across. She could only hope she wasn't scaring him back into silence! "My name is Minuet...ah - sorry for forgetting formalities..." Her father would be most appauled, least she could do for someone nice was to offer her name!

"Minuet.... that's lovely," he whispered. "Are you like your parents?" he asked after a moment. "My parents, they are not. I was born different. Was it the same with you?"
His eyes, he couldn't keep them off her. Everything about her, the way she moved, spoke... it intrigued him. Was this normal? Sometimes foals just born so different from their parents... deformed...strange? If it was true, would that make him feel any less... freakish?

"Thank you.." Minuet smiled gently, how nice of him to compliment! The mare could say she never got many compliments outside her own family. Speaking of her family; she paused for a moment to actually think about her parents. She supposed that she was both of them in a way....
"Well...Kind of and kind of not. I suppose I have certian characteristics of both. I got my spikes and tail from my father...my mask was....well; from my mother." Immediately she went quieter and somber; obviously a sore subject for her. Yet she quickly tried to bounce back, putting on another smile. "My sisters look more like my parents. One is an Angeni/unicorn and the other is a full angeni. We're just out parent's kids is all..."

Sumi chewed on that answer for a while, his pupil-less eyes squinting and his tail flicking slowly. "I see..."
He shifted his weight on his hooves. "My mom has wings like yours, feathered and all... my father like a butterfly or something..." He looked at the little flairs off his shoulders and tried, unsuccessfully like he had since he was a foal, to move them like wings. "The protector of my old herd said these were failed wings." He frowned, doubt clouding his mind. It wasn't he first time he's suspected he wasn't his parent's foal.. but he never would let himself dwell on the subject.
