To be truthfully honest, life had seemed to slow down for Lucky. He wasn't too sure why and had always seemed to keep himself busy wandering the lands, looking for adventure. But there was something missing that he couldn't just put his foot on it.
He'd never felt this way when his friends were around as a foal. So what was it now? For a few days he had done some soul searching. Trying to figure out just exactly what it was. And after a while he had decided that he needed a grand adventure to keep himself even more preoccupied. That was it. He just needed to keep his mind off the world. It had started to become a crowded place anyways and a nice little get away from the usual routine might do him good.
The young stallion had drifted through different groups of Soquili for the past couple weeks. Listening to fantastical stories that some told of certain places that held treasures and wonders that rarely few had seen. And he noted where each and every place was. He wanted to see them all. Each new tale seemed to be better than the last. And each one peeked his interest even more.
This is what he needed. And so he set off. Leaving his father behind in search of adventure. He had done it often before, but this time he would be gone longer than ever. Lucky needed to strike it out on his own anyway. No point in hanging around his family all the time when the sweet siren sound of excitement tugged at the reigns.
His first bit of exploration would start off in a large forest that he had yet to even see let a lone walk through. And with quick hooves he soon found a decent trail to begin the journey through. There had been much talk about things in this forest. So it had to be the right place to start, right?

Inali had an admitted weakness for the forest. It was so quiet, yet so loud at the same time. There was less of a chance to encounter other soquili, which was much to Inali’s liking lately. Her sociability had retreated, in the face of heartbreak and a long time away, by herself. It would return- of that she had no doubt. But for now, Inali greatly valued her solitude, and time to think.
Still wandering quietly in the forest, smiling up at birds and the rare insect, a sudden noise took Inali’s attention. What was that? It sounded like steps. Someone was in her forest? The thought of social encounter made Inali both happy and nervous. Maybe she could watch the other soquili first, and determine what they were like… No, that was silly. Where had her braveness gone? Inali found herself unable to reconcile what she had turned into, these long months away. Where had she gone? This shy, reclusive mare wasn’t Inali at all.
Still, caution was best. What if it was a kalona? Inali had only had one good experience with a kalona who had been utterly different from his kind, Drizzt. Would she ever see him again? He had been a good companion, but Inali didn’t want to wander towards where she thought kalona were likely to be. It would just lead to fighting, and the red mare was no longer sure that she could fully defend herself. When she had been younger, and cockier, she thought herself an admirable opponent, but now she knew far, far better.
“Are you lost?” The stallion (for now Inali could see that he was) on the trail slightly below her didn’t look lost in the least, but it didn’t hurt to ask. Inali kept her tone light, with a bantering quality to it. She found herself suddenly quite intrigued by the stallion wandering in such a remote area. The fact that he was interesting looking only helped. In fact, he looked a bit like a reversed Inali, with his black coat and red feet. What were the stripes on his side? Always a bit nosy, Inali trotted out to meet him. “I’m Inali. I live here. What are you doing here? Excuse me if I sound rude. I just don’t get many visitors.”

Admittedly, Lucky hadn't been paying much attention to the trail ahead. Or else he probably would have noticed the mare sooner. It was a silly thing to do. Not pay attention to your surroundings. And he could just hear his father in the back of his head scolding him for it. Lately now, his conscience had taken on the voice of Cadaver which he found a little odd yet comforting. The older stallion knew what he was talking about anyway.
The feather behind his ear fluttered slightly as he pulled his head up higher than it had been. Bright green eyes locking on the mare who had started her approach from the tail ahead. No need to keep your nose to the ground when someone else was around. Though usually it was good to sniff out your surroundings as well. Get a feel for it.
And so his head cocked to the side quickly, a curious raise of his eyebrows as he gave his current surroundings a quick look over. A bright grin coming to his lips. "Lost? Well, I suppose one could say I might be lost. But when one is off on an adventure to a place you've never been you can't help but be lost." It made perfect sense to him really. Even if it made no sense to her. Well, anyone could be lost when they weren't in familiar territory. So...technically everyone who wandered anywhere they weren't familiar with was lost. "My name is Lucky thirteen. Lucky is what my friends call me." He glanced about the forest again. "Ah, its a nice place you live in for sure. I'm just here on adventure. I've heard stories about things in this place and wanted to check some of 'em out." Lucky chuckled lightly, giving a small shake of his head. "Nah, its ok and really understandable. I'd probably be the same way"

This strange new stallion had a point. If you were somewhere you hadn’t been, you were by nature lost. It took a moment for Inali’s mind to untangle the words, but when she had, she nodded once with approval. How very, very true. “You’d be lost even if you’ve been here before. There’s a fork in the trail ahead. One half goes to a cliff, the other continues onwards. If you hadn’t known which one, and you were more rash, you could run right off.” Inali was amused by her own words. No one had ever run off the ‘cliff’- mainly because it was only a few feet off the ground, and because no one had ever been that stupid, to gallop without looking first.
Ah, and what a strange name he had! Wasn’t the number thirteen supposed to be unlucky? There was the point of it, Inali supposed. It was certainly turning a superstition upside down. “Are you really lucky, or is that just your name?” The mare found herself warming up to the back and forth banter with this stallion. Yes, it had been far too long, and she had always gotten along better with stallions anywho. They seemed to be less sensitive, more willing to take the jokes Inali dolled out in plenty.
“Did you hear about the troll that lives here then? Frightfully big, red creature, with blazing silver eyes. It has bat wings, and a strange marking on its rump.” It was clear Inali was talking about herself, her voice going low and rather husky as she dropped into story-telling mode. “It eats young stallions that go too far into its forest. Eats them, and would leave only your pretty little earrings.” Eyes sparkling, Inali burst out laughing, a sound not at all delicate or feminine.
“Please stay a while with me. It’s really been far too long since I’ve had anyone to talk to, and you seem interesting enough.” Coming down the trail, Inali stopped within touching distance of Lucky, inclining her head gracefully once, then gesturing around them. “There’s a stream nearby if you’re thirsty, and some berry bushes if you’re hungry. Just don’t eat the purple ones. They’ll get you very ill.” Inali had learned the hard way; after all, she really had no forest wisdom when she first had come here, and was still learning about many of the aspects of her new home in the most difficult manner possible.

"Well I guess that's true. This forest does seem to be pretty vast. It'd take a long while just to traverse it and even then you'd still not know every nook and cranny." He listened quietly to her little description about the fork in the road ahead. His cheerful grin growing just a bit wider. "Ah well. I'd just let the fates decide which way I'd go. If I was meant to run off a cliff I was meant to run off a cliff. Though it'd be pretty crappy to have it all end like that and so soon."
Lucky, no matter what anyone said about his name, was pretty proud of it. He knew that some found the number thirteen unlucky. But well, the stallion hadn't come across any runs of bad luck in his life. And personally he'd hoped to never do so. "I'd like to say I'm pretty lucky indeed." He puffed his chest out just slightly but soon relaxed once again. "The good kind of luck really. I've never really come about any bad luck, though I figure every once and a while some will come across a nice string of it. But until that day I'll just count my blessings." He had never had a problem conversing with others and had always been one not minding just chatting the day away. It was a nice treat to the quite stillness of traveling along and caused a break in the mundane silence of traveling alone.
His eyes went wide just a bit as she talked about a troll. He hadn't heard any stories about that! And he was just about to believe her until she busted out in laughter. A small chuckle rumbling up from deep within his chest. "Bah! I'm not afraid of any smelly ol' troll. And if he did gobble me up well I'd give him a right bout of indigestion as one last kick in the pants."
The stallion pursed his lips for a moment as she asked him to stay. Well, it really couldn't hurt right? And he had all the time in the world to go adventuring. Plus she did seem really nice after all. "Alright then. I'll stick around for a while." Lucky didn't have that many friends, truth be told. And the mare seemed possibly like she didn't have many either. Otherwise she might of had a lot more company around than she spoke of. Nodding his head, his grin faded into a warm smile as she came closer. "Right, purple ones make you sick. I'll remember that." He was getting pretty thirsty he noted. A slight dryness to his mouth made him lick his lips just slightly. "I think I could go for a nice drink. Its been a little bit since my last stop at any water."

“Personally, I think running off a cliff would be a horrible death. All your friends would laugh when they heard, instead of feeling sorry.” Inali grinned again, showing her equine teeth. She could just imagine the few friends she had laughed until they keeled over and died if Inali ran off a cliff. Typical Inali, they would say. She’s put her head in the clouds at the wrong moment, and now she’s paid for it.
Lucky’s chest puffing out made Inali laugh again. It was nice to laugh, and feel her spirits grow light. He was a bit absurd, but who wasn’t? Inali certainly couldn’t say she wasn’t a strange bird, in one way or the other. “Well, I’m glad you at least partially live up to your name. It would be horrible if you just had bad luck all the time, and proved what everyone said about thirteen true. And I do hope you find the full luck your name suggests one day.” And why not? Lucky was a nice stallion, and he was currently bringing happiness to Inali’s life. What more could she ask for? He deserved what luck he could make in the often unkind world.
As Lucky bought her story, Inali grew increasingly more amused. Who knew that she told stories that good? Ah, at least she hadn’t lost practice! It was more fun than entertaining a foal, for Lucky bridled with adult bravado. “I have no doubt that you would, Lucky. You would show any troll that you’re clearly the dominant force of the forest, and that he should just move back to troll lands, and take all his stuff with him!”
“Well, if you’re thirsty, follow me.” The water really was a short distance away, and Inali was quite visible in the forest. She called out over her shoulder a few times, just in case Lucky managed to do the impossible and get lost following the bright red beacon. “This way. The water is cold, I’m afraid. I think it comes from melted snow somewhere up high.” Then, a bit later on: “Oh, and don’t go wading out into it where it quiets. It’s deceptively deep. I learned that the hard way.” Oh yes, Inali could remember the cold seeping into her bones, and having to stand in full sun for hours until she felt warm and whole again.
“One last thing… Ware of the crawfish. They’ll clamp right onto your nostrils and not let go.” Of course, this hadn’t actually happened to anyone Inali knew of, but Lucky seemed to buy her stories, and it amused her to tell him this. “I knew a colt who had one there for two weeks, before it dropped off and swam away. Poor little crawfish.”

"Well, it would serve me right then. Running before I looked. And I guess it would bring a little humor to whatever friends were around at the time." Lucky didn't plan on running off any cliffs anytime soon. So whatever friends he did have, which in all honesty wasn't many, would have to keep their laughter to themselves. Sometimes he could be a bit flighty and not look where he was going, but most of the time he kept his hooves on the ground.
Yes, perhaps one day his luck would all come to fruition and he'd be able to enjoy what luck life did have in store for him. But for now he could live with the fact that his luck was subtle. Even if others though that he was quite lucky indeed. "You could say that today would be one of my more luckier days. I hadn't really expected to run into anyone and look what happened. I ran into you. And your a pretty nice mare after all." He laughed lightly once more, giving a slight flick of his long, two toned tail. "Perhaps its both our lucky days, hmm?"
Lowering his head just a bit to the ground, he lifted his legs in an awkward fashion. As if about to charge or getting himself prepared for a fight. "Heck yea! Then he'd be all running home to his mama troll with his tail between his legs." Blinking for a moment, he pondered over this. "Do trolls even have tails?"
As she moved off, he quickly recomposed himself and trotted after her. Catching up pretty quickly he took a position beside her. No point in lagging behind when conversations could be had on the way there. And it was kind of awkward talking back and forth when your company was behind you. Lucky took note of her words. The young stallion wasn't really one for getting all soaking wet. Unless it was a really hot day. Which it was actually a fairly pleasant day for this time of the year. An ear flicked back while the other stood straight up as she mentioned craw fish. "Two weeks?! Wow. That's a long time for sure. I'd have to say poor colt as well, but he probably should of known better than to go sticking his nose in a spot where the craw fish was just tryin' to live."

Inali still had a hard time believing that Lucky was buying her story, and not simply humoring her. But his words were so earnest! He couldn’t have been that old… Ugh, age. It seemed irrelevant to Inali, but she had to admit this stallion made her feel on the older scale of things, and that was silly. She was in the prime of her life. Just because she had not gotten settled down, and just because she knew some of her friends were grandparents, did not mean she was old. They had simply gotten very early starts in their lives, and that had not been Inali’s choice.
Bending over to drink from the stream, Inali could not help but look for crawfish. Soon enough, her eyes spotted one of the arthropods, sitting motionless as the water lazed about them. “There one is Lucky! Best be careful, or you’ll damage your pretty face.” Nosing the little creature with her hoof, Inali snorted once as it quickly scurried away. Well, that was unexpected. Crawfish could move faster than she thought. Maybe there was a grain of truth to her tall tale.
“You said you’re traveling,” Inali addressed Lucky once more. “Where do you normally come from? Do you have much family?” The concept of family was so utterly foreign to Inali, who had never known her father, and could not recall the mare that was her mother. There were only hazy memories, of a sense of warmth and love, and warm milk in her small belly. “I used to live with the two leggers, but I haven’t been there in a while.” The two leggers had never been much use to Inali anyway. They could comb the difficult tangles out of her mane, and brush her coat until it was shiny, and they had treats at times, but in the grand scheme of thing Inali did not like putting up with the ministrations.

Indeed Lucky was probably not as old as Inali. He was only born about three months ago. There was still much in the world that he did not know about. But his age wouldn't stop him. Even Soquili older than him could act even more childish if they wanted to. And some did. Which made it a bit odd sometimes.
As they reached the stream, he blinked as she instantly mentioned a craw fish. And not soon after one of the little buggers scuttled away. He could of chased after it if he wanted, but for the moment those kind of silly things just didn't seem necessary. "Ah, he's nothin' but a scaredy pants. Took one look at us and knew we were trouble he did. So he ran back to his craw fishy mama." Lucky grinned with a chuckle as he bent his head down. Taking a long drink of the cold water. He had been thirsty! A lot thirstier than he had through previously. But the water felt good as it flowed down the back of his throat.
Lifting his head, he licked what remaining droplets of water clung to his dark lips before speaking. "Mmmm, my family moves around quite a bit so there really isn't one place I guess you could say that I come from. Though when I was younger we all spent our time in a little over grown grove. My dad said it was to keep us safe." He flicked his tail again, taking a few steps into the water. Letting it run over his hooves and cool them off. "Not a lot of family no. Just me, my mom and dad. My brother and sister. If you can believe it my mom's a Flutter. As are my brother and sister. Dad and I are the only two without wings. But that doesn't really bother me much. I'd rather stay on the ground and at a normal size than fluttering about nearly getting stepped on all the time. Memphis hates that I'm bigger than him." He laughed again, giving his head a shake and causing his necklace to jingle as it clinked against itself.
Two leggers? He had heard of two leggers from his father before but never really dove farther into what he had been told. Lowering his head, he took another quick drink. "I've heard of the two leggers and seen a few here and there. But I've never really approached one. My dad says some of them can be pretty mean sometimes so I'd rather just steer clear of that whole situation. But if you were living with a couple of 'em for a while I guess that means that not all of them have a sour disposition."

“Or perhaps he saw my face and ran in fear.” Laughing again, Inali nosed under a few rocks, though she uncovered nothing of immediate interest. It appeared she had scared away their one crawfish friend for the day. Ah well. It would be back for them to poke and prod later, hopefully with no fatal nose injuries. The very idea was enough to keep a grin on Inali’s face, her eyes devilish in the filtered light near the creek.
Listening to the story of Lucky’s family life, Inali was fascinated. His parents were of two entirely different species? She never would have guessed. Lucky looked as land bound as she was, and he was of a perfectly acceptable size. “That must be difficult for your siblings, knowing that they’ll never grow as large as you. But don’t you envy them for flight sometimes?” Unbidden, Inali thought of an old friend, Safi. She had always coveted his wings, wished to feel the wind in her mane as she flew above where she usually ran, bypassing difficult obstacles with ease. It was hard to believe that Lucky didn’t mind not having wings, though Inali had to admit the size was a disadvantage. Flutters were so small! Her mind immediate leapt to a rather embarrassing topic: How did a flutter mare and a regular stallion… er…. She shook her head to clear it quickly.
“No, many of the two leggers are quite nice, but they expect things of you. I wouldn’t put up with being ridden. They want to sit on you, and have you go where they want you to go! That was the final straw for me. It can be nice, when they groom you in places you can’t reach, but that was far too much of my personal space violated.” Inali shuddered at the recollection, though no two legger had ever gotten on her back, thank you very much. She had just seen it happen, and left before her human had gotten any ideas.
“I think you can get much the same satisfaction out of a herd than you can from a two legger. Not being a member of a herd, I wouldn’t know, but that’s what I think.” Herd life just didn’t agree with Inali. She needed different personalities to keep her world click. Oh, there was one or two she had met who she could have spent forever with, but for the most part, she needed a wide variety of squili to keep her entertained, interspersed with solitude. “But Lucky, why did you decide to leave?”

"Nah. I don't think that. You've got a nice face." He smiled brightly. In all truth he hadn't been all too interested in the craw fish. Especially if it wished to take a vacation by clinging to his nose for a couple of weeks! How embarrassing that would be. You probably would have to go and hide just to escape the ridicule. Of course, that kind of incident might actually make you want to go running off a cliff. If you were that worried about how you looked anyway.
Nibbling at a bit of the green grass near the waters edge. Swallowing it mid-chew. He didn't want her to wait for a reply while he stuffed his face with grass! "Mmm, well. They don't really seem all that bothered by their smaller size. And flutters can take on a normal size like any other Soquili. It just takes a bit more concentration really and they can't stay that way for very long." Shaking his head, his two toned mane flopped over his shoulders. It had grown a bit rough in parts, but Lucky didn't really preen himself like some stallions might. Having a decent appearance was nice, but it wasn't top of his list of things to do. "Not really? I mean yea, I'm sure its nice to fly around and all. But I rather keep my hooves on the ground. There is a lot more beauty in things close up than there is way up high in the skies. You tend to miss a lot of things when your flying about I would think." The stallion had never coveted anyone for anything they had. He was given what he was given and if that's what the spirits wanted him to have than he'd accept it as it is. "Plus I don't think my dad would know what to do with a bunch of Flutter kids anyway." He laughed. Memories of the dark gray stallion flooded into his mind. Lucky missed the old brute and his parents were quite the odd pair. But hey, love was love after all.
Pursing his lips, he thought about what she said for a brief moment. "I guess it would be nice to have those kinds of luxuries. Though I don't think I could stand it for very long either. And having one riding on my back? Nuh-uh. No. That's ok."
"Well its a good thought anyway. But at least in a herd the others can understand you. Two leggers, they can do all the actions in the world and try to get me to understand what they're trying to get across but it would take me too long to figure out what they wanted. I'd end up going and getting a bucket of apples when they asked me to stand up on my back legs." Grinning, he gave his head a little shake again. Lucky liked his own little family life, but herd just seemed a bit too crowded. And nothing but a bunch of grumblers only grumbling at themselves. Being in close quarters to others all the time just didn't seem too exciting. Seeing the same faces day in and day out. Boring. An ear perked at her question. "Why did I leave? Well all little birdies have to leave sometime when they've out grown the nest. Plus the open world just calls to me too much sometimes. I want to see it all. Learn everything I can about it." Lifting his gaze slightly skyward, his mind drifted into a slight daze as he thought of what wonders the world held for him to seek out and find.

Inali still found it odd that Lucky didn't envy his siblings' ability to fly, but didn't press the matter anymore. If he didn't care, he didn't care. Besides, he had a point. Perhaps they did miss a lot, up in that high, cold air, but Inali still wanted to be ale to experience it. It was too bad she couldn't just grow wings one day! That would have been something else. Ah well. Perhaps she would find another winged soquili with good story telling ability, to fulfill all her desires and questions.
At least he agreed with her on the matter of two leggers! No soquili should be a beast of burden, and Inali could not see the situation as otherwise. How could they stand it? One day, maybe she'd meet a soquili that kept up constant ties with the humans, and interrogate them on the manner. For now, she was content to spread horror stories to all that wandered through her little patch of forest.
"That's a good reason to leave." Smiling softly, Inali thought of leaving her own comfortable bubble of forest. Right now, it was home, but in a few days, or weeks? It would grow stifling and boring. It was already becoming so, but she wasn't quite sure if she was prepared to leave just yet. She was an independent mare, but hurt can reduce us all to shells, and Inali had to admit that that's what she saw herself as- a shell of the old, vibrant red mare of a few months past.
"Where are you going now, after my forest? Anywhere in particular, or just wandering?"

Well, stories to fulfill her sky flying desires and questions weren't things that Lucky had. But if she wanted stories about other things he could probably pull up a few from his memory. And then he wondered briefly, why she had asked him if he envied them. Perhaps Inali herself envied those who were born with wings. Flutter wings didn't take one very high as he knew they were very delicate things and more for just buzzing about. But the feathery wings of winds could take you to greater heights. Perhaps it might of been something to covet, if you were never able to experience such things.
The stallion's one and only experience with two leggers was long ago when he was a foal. And even then it wasn't anything direct. Just him and a friend wandering around one's teepee and stealing a few apples. Pretty harmless if you asked him. But the two legger who lived there probably wasn't too happy to see small, dirty hoof prints all around the inside of their home.
"Well, its certainly a good enough reason to me and I'm glad you see it as well. Thought its not like I couldn't go back and visit my family." Lucky took another quick drink from the stream. Letting the water slosh around in him mouth for a brief moment as he thought. "Possibly the ocean. Well, at least the beaches anyway. I've never been there before and I heard there are strange Soquili that live around there that...live in the water." Green eyes shifted back and forth as if it were some big secret that he didn't want prying ears to hear.

“Soquili? In the water? Now which one of us is telling tall tales?” The very idea! But then… It didn’t seem too far fetched, once Inali thought about it. She had never been to any deep bodies of water, and therefore couldn’t verify or dispute Lucky’s claims. “I’d like to see that as well, one day. I want to talk to one, and see what it’s like! Is it like flying?” Enthusiasm beginning to build, Inali quickly calmed herself.
“And I’ve never been to the ocean, but I’ve heard it is very nice. Very big. Can you imagine? A body of water that just stretches on forever! Does it ever end? I suppose no one will ever know. I don’t think even the strongest wind could cross that much water. And apparently you can’t drink it either. So be careful, or you’ll get sick.” Suddenly feeling very maternal to Lucky, Inali whickered softly. He was out on his own for the first time, and he had this whole world spread before him. How wonderful!
“I should let you keep going though,” Inali said regretfully. She liked having Lucky’s company, but if he ever wanted to get anywhere, stopping and talking for this long would just distract him. “But please visit me any time you can. I enjoyed talking with you. You’ll have to tell me all of your adventures. All of them!”
Another stallion, another relationship culminating in something other than what Inali wanted. Still, she would keep her eyes on Lucky, and perhaps one day… For now, she saw him as still too young, but once he had seen the world, everything might very well change.

"Well, tales or not I'm going to find out for sure." He nodded affirmatively. Though he thought about her questions for a moment. "I would guess it would be like...flying but in the water? I heard that some of them have strange fins that kind of look like wings anyway." But he'd never really know until he found one and dragged all the answers out of it.
Tilting his head lightly, Lucky chewed on his bottom lip. "I've heard stories of Soquili that run around the lands that actually came from over the ocean. From a different land. A very different land. They tend to wear things called saddles, reigns or tack. But I've never come across one in real life. But hey, anything is possible if you put your mind to it."
He frowned lightly. Their meeting had been quite short. Pawing at the ground lightly, an ear perked curiously. "You could come with me if you wanted? I mean..." Pausing for a second, he gave his tail a thoughtful flick. "It is kinda lonely adventuring on your own and I've enjoyed your company so far. Plus you know, you'd get to see the ocean and if one of these water Soquili were found you could ask it your questions." Both ears perked now. "Only if you wanted. Its up to you. I'm not gonna force you if its something your not feeling up to." Lucky glanced around the forest that surrounded them for a few minutes. An open beach with barely any trees around might of been a breath of fresh air for anyone who lived constantly in the forest. But he put the invitation out there for her and if she wanted to take it or deny it she could. Either way he'd be parting ways with her or have a new companion on another adventure.
