 21 pulled herself up the riverbank with a gasp for air and glared up at the vanishing black shadow on the cliff's edge. Her bright red and yellow eyes remained narrowly focused. He had won this time, but he wasn't rid of her just yet..
The spunky female could hear his taunting laugh "I'll bet you can't make it across, if you do..." She didn't need to hear the rest of his offer, she knew the log was cracked, old, damp, ready to give. The odds were against her. The odds were always in his favor. She loved him anyway.
Her paw slowly moved and settled on the log and she started to slink across. He had watched her with a silent respect, and she knew in that instant it was worth risking her neck. She hated him. The log cracked and splintered and then gave way, she looked up at him her eyes wide before her stomach dropped and she felt herself free falling. "I'll find you!" She howled before hitting the icy rapid water hard, hard enough that blackness took over.
She stood on the bank now breathing hard. "I'll find him..." She knew she would, that was their game, this was a bet she always won, she always found him. It was a strange obsession a love and a hatred that made her want to snuggle against the black furred male, or rip his lungs from his chest. "I bet I won't" She muttered to herself disgusted, and limped off to recuperate from her ordeal.
~~~ 3 Months later ~~~
The seasons had changed and at long last she had traveled the great distance and found him. His scent made her nostrils flare in recognition and her two toned eyes gleamed. She was happy to have found him, but cautious for he seemed to be behind the scented line of a pack. She waited for him ever patient, he would leave those lands at some point.
She sat waiting in a narrow strip of open territory between the ocean dwelling pack who's name she knew not, and the pack that Blackjack may have joined. "Time to play another round..." She murmured.
Blackjack stretched and trotted away from the main den. The company was growing tiresome, he hoped he hadn't made a mistake and joining. The King would still need to see Blackjack prove himself before he would socialize, and that feisty Kiara character was often busy. Clooney occupied himself with his toy, the little turquoise wolf that would offer him no challenge at all, so Blackjack was left with the pupsitter or Hope, the proud younger wolf itching for a fight. Neither had the right disposition to play his games. Blackjack wasn't planning to begin his assignment just yet, but it couldn't hurt to wander in the direction in which he would point his paws in the next few days.
As he wandered further Blackjack's fur began to prickle with the irritating feeling that he was being watched. This wasn't the way the game was played, he'd have to teach that to his observer. Slowly turning around Blackjack's eyes scanned the foliage, expecting to pick out the bright blue or purple pelt of one of his lesser packmates, but the forest was silent. If he wasn't being watched, what was causing his unease?
Blackjack looked about for a higher point of land, finally settling on a good sized pile of rocks that sloped on one side but ended abruptly on the other forming what resembled a miniature cliff. Slowly approaching the edge Blackjack was able to see a bit further into the distance, and the red and white female waiting with the air of a cat sitting in front of a mouse hole.
Struggling between the urge to whine and laugh, Blackjack shook his head.
The next hand had been dealt.
Red tipped ears perked and slowly she lifted her gaze, naturally she spotted his dark form, he could never hide from her, and she could never resist his challenges. Her eyes narrowed on him and she waited, he would come to toy with her, she always hunted him down and he always turned the tide in his favor. What a game they played, and she could barely remember how it had begun.
It had been long ago when they were younger, he had challenged her after snatching away her food, she had risen to his baiting. Things had never changed, just emotions and the bets.
"Come on...come on you can't hide there forever..." She murmured softly to herself, but she knew he would know her thoughts. He was the only one who could see through her poker face.
Blackjack picked his way down the little slope in a few well timed jumps, shaking his feet a bit to dislodge a few pebbles caught between his paw pads once he had reached the bottom. Then, like an inky shadow he glided over the landscape, devouring the distance between him and the white female who he could always count on to return for another game. It didn't matter if all she held were twos, she'd bet against his aces with a recklessness that fascinated the charcoal wolf.
Blackjack longed to raise the stakes once again, but the current setting didn't present him with much to work with. He'd have to stall a bit, but that was all part of the game too, finding the perfect opening with which to strike the fatal blow and collect the prize, to turn the cards and see the expression on his opponent's face when a bluff had been called.
"Well, well, well," Blackjack crooned. "21, 21. Ready to gamble a bit more of your dignity away my dear?"
"I'll win it all back in the end Blackjack" She huffed softly and moved closer to the dark male, such a contrast they were one dark as night, the other white and snowy. She, a reckless, wild, and loud femme. He, a careful, calculating brute. They made quite a pair when they weren't busy trying to tear each other up, make each other pay.
She didn't stop until her nose was right up against his chest, she lifted it and her eyes met his filled with a passion for life. "You knew what was going to happen." Her voice came out a soft growl, an acusation, yet laced within was a hurting question. You knew I fell, why didn't you come? Her fury at the time had been born of her pain, he would have left her to die?
She snarled and shook her head, she was too strong to let go of life until she had the high hand. She inhaled his scent and looked around suddenly turning a cold shoulder trying to keep her poker face. As if she could bluff at all around him. "So what are you up to now? A pack? Duping them?" She snorted. "They'll be on your tail you fool."
