This is a series by Garth Nix and it is about a people who live in darkness and can control light. The 'Choosen" are ranked by color red being the lowest and voilet being the highest. Tal a young boy has to go and get a sunstone (it is how they control light) for his mother who is ill and his family because the stones are used to go into the sprit world. The sprit world is dangerous but could hold the key to saving his mom.

This story though it is written in a simple style is not. It is a complex story with many differnt underlying plots and ideas. mostly geared towards fifth grade- ninth i know that I love it even if I'm 21 haha
