A dingy pencil lies in a glass case, worn with age and use. The original color is probably black, but now, with the various degrees of burn marks and sweat from the fingers, is has from a charcoal grey to dark brown look. The eraser has long disappeared. Only a small aluminum cylinder, bent and crushed, serves as a reminder of vigorous use and fits of frustration. The tip has a hand-whittled look, bumpy and dull, not sharp and smooth like the pencils now. If this pencil were not resting on a table, on would swear that it recently has been a chew toy for a small canine. The body of the pencil is covered in various teeth marks; even the tip is not spared. Perhaps the owner tries to find inspiration by taking the wooden fragrance of the instrument.
This pencil once helped write so many letters to me, giving me news from home, encouragement from friends, and messages of love from him. Now, it laid, silent and lifeless, in the glass case, mutely telling its owner’s story.
I’ll miss you, Alecs. Requiescat in Pace. ----------------------------------------------------- Lamenting the death of Alecs in my novel, sad but necessary for the good of the plotline.

Reminds me of 'The Red Wheelbarrow', for some reason (I believe it may be the imagry in something simple), and my own story.
