The cat one is super cute and I can definitely appreciate the illustrative quality of it - graphics isn't all sleek lines and glorious technical beauty, especially if you look at European (particularly British) designers... but it is very hard to follow, there's no real hierarchy which makes it impossible to read. The individual images are beautiful but it's very difficult to get the 'story' of the image.
Varying your scale can help with this a lot, playing with the composition can be really fun - I did this whole project in the first year of my degree about using composition and colour to manipulate people's perceptions of an image.
If you want to go with a bad anime lineart aesthetic maybe you could look at the art for
gitaroo man. Not sure you can really see from that image but they use pencil-crayon textures with their digital colouring which I think gives it a bit of depth and makes the characters seem a little more low-tech and relatable.
