Charring Cross is one of the larger cities Nod has to offer. Located amongst the rolling hills and gentle forests of the Dreamscape, it is perhaps the most varied in terms of its population. Due to its geographical location in the southern half of the Dreamscape, many Chimera can be found living in the darker corners of the city. The Mayor (a semi-mythical being with whom the soul of the city is connected) has recently gone missing, leaving the city to slowly crumble and die as the magic that animates it gradually dries up.

Evans strode with confidence through the lush bright green hills of the Dreamscape. The neon green grass tickled between his toes as he made his way to Charring Cross. But beneath his smiling exterior all was not well with Evans the Twice Alive.

His newly acquired armor didn’t fit quite right. The chest piece was much too large, shaking and clinking loudly at even the slightest of movements. The leg grieves were much too tight every few steps he had to stop and pull at the fabric that rode at his crotch. The boots were the worst of the whole set; the way they looked up at him with their plain tan faces grinning stupidly at him had driven him almost beyond madness. Finally when he could no longer stand to look at them any more he decided to just tie them together by their plain brown laces and sling them over his shoulder. He would wear them when he needed them and not a moment sooner. The whole set seemed to slow him down almost as if it had an agility modifier of -2. (dun dun DUN)

The moon was standing still so high in the sky as he approached the large magnificent gates that were slung open wide. Standing with hands on hips, and his nun chuck boots from his shoulder slowly starting to slip, he smiled with certainty on his lips.

“This must be the place.” He grinned wildly “The draw here is almost too intense."

With one hard and fast fist pump, Evans made his way into the city of the Charring Cross.

Ninny-Pooh had been sitting on the archway for the past few hours, watching as people came and went from the city. She had seen his face in a dream and as a by-the-book (whatever that book was) Dreamseer, she had been searching for him....a hero who would come to Charring Cross this very day. Still, though, nothing could have prepared her for the sight of him. He was everything she had expected; a knight in shining armor. Okay, so maybe his armor was a bit rusty and didn't fit quite right, but there was no mistaking him. This was the Nubian she had seen in her dreams.

She grinned broadly as only she could, calling down to Evans as he entered the city. "Don't you know it's bad luck to enter a town without your shoes on?" She said as her cat tail swished back and forth and her legs kicked happily.

Evans looked up at Ninny-Pooh then back at his feet. He wiggled his toes just to make sure they were bare - and they were. Arching one eyebrow, Evans looked back at Ninny-Pooh and called out in an uncertain voice.

"How much bad luck are we talking about here?"

Shouldering the slipping shoes, he began again.

"Because I certainly could do without luck of the bad brand."

She put her index finger to her chin and looked upwards in thought, still kicking her feet and swishing her tail carelessly. "Mmm, you don't wanna know," she said with an air of certainty in her voice. "First, your feet will fall off and you'll have to walk around on your hands. Then your teeth will fall out and you'll have to eat mud. Then a rain cloud will follow you around, making mud wherever you walk with your hands and your hands will be all dirty..." she continued to ramble, seeming to forget that she was actually talking to someone instead of just making up inane stories.

Not wanting to eat mud for the rest of his life, Evans began to put on his plain boots, starting with his left foot.

"I could go through that gate again. That would help, I think. Surely it would"

With both shoes on he stood proudly, he even did a little jig to show how much he liked his new shoes.

"By the way who are you Hyborean wanderer? You who sits atop gate posts and warns travelers of their own misfortunes."

She rubbed her chin, looking at his plain, boring boots as he jigged. "My, I can see why you took them off..." Looking up from his shoes as he spoke to her, she smiled brightly and extended a hand in greetings. "Oh! I'm Ninny-Pooh. What's your name? Oh, by the way, I saw you in my dreams."

Evans took her extended hand and shook it with both hands in a furious greeting.

"I am Evans. Evans the Mighty. Evans the slain. Evans the Twice Alive."

He let go of her hand and said with a smirk, "Dreams you say? Me, the star of the night. Tell me about them."

"I could tell you. Or..." a mischevious expression took her face. "I could show you! Come on!" With that, she took off down the streets of the town, skipping and humming merrily as she went.

As she led him down the cobblestone streets illuminated by moonlight, wrought iron lamps, and paper lanterns, a strange sort of sadness seemed to pervade the spirit of the city. It looked to be crumbling in places, rotten in others. Many of the people seemed depressed and in unusually low spirits. No music drifted through the air.

At last they arrived at a quiet, grassy park. Upon the tallest hill stood a weeping willow tree. Standing beneath the tree, she pointed towards the Mayor's house. "It's empty," she said, the warmth gone from her voice, replaced with a sort of melancholy. "And I saw you fill it with song and cheer once more...I saw you Evans," she smiled again. "I saw you return our Mayor to us."

Evans stared at the empty manor on the lonely hill.

"I am already on a mission. I need to find someone that may already be dead." His voice was cold as he continued to stare at the sad vacant house. "But..." Turning to face Ninny-Pooh, he grasped her by her shoulders and knelt down so their faces were level "But I cannot. No. I will not leave any needy person in distress. I will find your mayor"

He let go of her shoulders and walked towards the Mayor's house.

"So" Evans squinted at the house and scratched the top of his head "How can I find him?"

She clapped happily and jumped for joy. "Thank you, Evans the brave! Evans the mighty! Evans the Twice Alive! The town of Charring Cross will breath once again!" She skipped after him as he made his way to the house. "I do not know how you will find him," she said. "All I know is that you will. I have seen it in my dreams! And there are others who will help you...I have seen their faces too."

The lush color of the hill seemed to fade away as Evans lurched forward up the long hill towards the Mayor's house. The happiness had been drained from the blades of grass, hiding within their soft velvet appearance menacing stickers and weeds.

Had his boots not been snuggly fit to his feet he surely would have felt the sting of an evil goat-headed sticker. Evans tromped on through the trapped grass and pushing past the swaying gate that groaned as the wind pushed it about like a schoolyard bully he soon found himself at the large wooden doors of the missing mayor’s house. With no reason to knock, he attempted to open the door hoping it wasn't locked because he would hate to boot in such a lovely ornate door.

The door yielded to his touch, swinging open with a rusty groan of protest. The inside of the manor looked much like a haunted house; cobwebs wafting through the air, furnishings covered in dust as though they had lain fallow for centuries, and the cold chill of sadness covering everything. Ninny-Pooh was hiding behind Evans, the much-braver than her. "He vanished from our town without a trace less than a month ago...and already the Withering has spread this far. Soon, it will turn this whole town to a blight of dust," she said despairingly.

Evans started the search of the manor. He started by picking up vases and checking underneath them, opening closet doors and searching behind gaudy coats.

Wiping dust from a long table with one finger he turned to Ninny-Pooh and asked,"So did he have any enemies? Dragons perhaps?"

Evans:
You notice something in the pocket of one of the coats. It's a small slip of parchment which reads, "652 Whompingdale Drive".

Ninny-Pooh shook her head. "I wouldn't know...I didn't know him personally. But I haven't ever seen a dragon...I imagine they're too fabulous to be an enemy," she said in an almost blase manner, looking at a tacky pair of old grandma curtains as though they were the most fascinating thing on the Disc.

"He's looking for a pinkling," she said suddenly, but in a very calm and casual voice. What an odd thing to say.
