She was bored. More importantly, her sanity was bordering on tiny threads thanks to the heat wave that had rippled in sometime during last night. It was a dusty, scratchy sort of feeling that dried out her mouth and just made her want to spit. Still somewhat groggy after her late night of hunting, the young mare stretched her wings and gave her slender body a shake. The two-toned, matted mess of her mane shook itself across her muddy shoulders, which still gleamed faintly like polished scales due to the sun. It was inherited from her grandfather, or so she'd been told. Theia snorted ruefully at such a reflection; she'd never met the old man, or the alpha of the herd, her grandmother. She wasn't quite sure why. Seeking them out wouldn't be a bad idea.

She yawned widely, baring bloodied fangs before they were again sheathed by her soft muzzle. Ever since she'd grown up, Theia had wandered away from her family to live on the outskirts by herself, enjoying both the solitude and the chance to hunt for herself without interuption or annoyance. Then again, she'd always been a bit more of a social creature--she liked to play with her food before she killed it.

Moving swiftly, the mare made her way towards a gurgling brook she'd discovered just last night. The stallion she'd cornered there thought he could take her with his back to the water... It looked like most of the resulting mess had been washed away. Vaguely amused, Theia lowered her head to take a drink, tail whisking irritably as the sun bore down upon her back with all its furious intensity. Goddamn heat...

Kosomot had taken his daily training and hunt away from his father's lands for the day. The young Kalona stallion had grown tiresome of the old man's ever watching eyes glaring at him from atop his rocky perch amongst the mountains. He never understood why his father continued to live up there when all of life was happening down on the even grounds. Perhaps it was Valarauco's loosing faith in their kind that kept him to himself. Or other reasons that were beyond Kosomot's understanding, either way.

The heat of the day made training quite irritable as sweat clung to his dark blue body. This must of been the 'height' of summer. Where even the northern winds blew blasts of hot air into your face instead of a refreshing and cooling wind.

Having abandoned his work for the day, what was one day after all?, the stallion had caught himself a nice buck amongst the forest. Not at all in the mood for playful cat and mouse games. It was just too hot. And not soon after he had struck the final blow, severing the buck's spine behind the neck, he ate. Though the deer's heart had not completely stopped by the time he began eating. Kosomot liked his food this way. Valarauco claimed it was at least one thing, besides looks, that he had gotten from his mother. Not that he knew her or anything, though it did interest him at times what she was like. But those thoughts were instantly banished by his father. And any inquiries as to where she could be located were swept aside.

Licking the blood from his muzzle, the sound of water reached his ears. Good, he could go wash off what he could not reach. And so he made his way through the forest. Hooves pounding deep into the earth as his large body lumbered between trees. Long orange and red hair stained with streaks of blood lapped at his sides as he ran.

Not long now till he reached his destination.

What was this? The crack of a stray twig, the groan of rocks being crushed deeper into the great mother of the world... Something big was approaching. Her ears flicked backwards to better listen, blood red eyes rolling to their corners to observe. Still, she waited until she was finished drinking before lifting her head, sullen strands of black-tipped crimson falling in front of her face. There! A great, bloated beast of a stallion... The crackling fury of his mane did not quite latch hers in length, but wasn't he a ferocious sight to behold?

The ebony-dipped spade of her tail snapped at the ground some at his approach, rustling black pinions as her wings settled more snugly against her sides. He looked a mess. Blood stained his sides, drawing attention to the bizarre, molten cracks that almost seemed to ripple there. She'd never really met another Kalona outside her family--and were those weird horns on his head?--so this was definitely something new to her.

"Messy." She said cheekily, pawing at the glassy surface of the stream with one hoof to better savor its coolness. "Dunno how you managed to bother to eat in this heat..." Was he encroaching on the herd's territory? No, she didn't think so. It was likely she'd wandered out of 'safety' again... though, now that she was fully grown, Theia hardly needed anyone's protection.

The sight of water caused him to pick up his pace. But then sudden sound of movement and a voice brought the stallion to an abrupt halt. Fire red eyes instantly snapping in the voices direction and landing upon the brown colored mare, ears flicking back for just a breath of a second.

Kosomot had never truly been around females, let alone Kalona females. Save for his own sisters, but he barely spent any time with them. He did not have that kind of bond that some might have for their own blood. No, he was taught not to get attached to anything or anyone. For one never knew that one day they might have to kill whatever or whoever it was. It was best to leave all those feelings to the wind.

Shaking his head lightly, his mane finally had settled down against his neck and shoulders. The spaded tip of his tail flicking back and forth in a monotonous fashion. This Kalona mare was indeed the first outside of his own family he had personally encountered. Valarauco had drug him along and he had stuck around for his father's conversations, but never took the step to ever interact with the others. No, there was no need.

"I like my meals messy." Kosomot growled in responce a bit under his breath. Stepping into the stream of water, he used the spade of his tail to splash some water up onto his sides and back. Tiny streams trickling off his body as the blood he could not get to washed away. What a waste, but it was better than that horrid stench that came if you let the blood linger too long. He rubbed his upper legs together as he got them wet the best he could. The water wasn't very deep so it wasn't quite as easy as he thought it might of been. "When you are hungry you are hungry. It doesn't matter what the weather is like, you still hunt to survive. If you go without eating because of such silly things you'll become weak and disorientated."

"You would." Theia shot back without delay, a slight sneer playing across her face. "You're a Kalona, aren't you? That's the fun part. Doesn't mean you have to roll in it though." She eyed him idly as he waded into the river and did what he could to wash the blood away, snorting faintly as the pinked rivulets of water reminded her of her own kill last night. Ah, well. Crimson hooves shifted, letting her mince idly in place while her gaze was directed to the trees from where he'd barged through. He'd been quiet, at least--the blood on him was still quite fresh, so he must have killed only just now.

His words made her focus on him again, and she tilted her head with a toothy grin. "Tell me you aren't lecturing me. The smart thing to do is hunt when the conditions are best. Even if they aren't, or if you aren't hungry, any real hunter knows how to deal with it." Silly things indeed! He made her skin prickle just like her brother did. How annoying. Well, whatever. Time to find out the most important things of all.

"You're a pure blood, huh? Better be." Her sharp teeth snapped together, not so much a threat as she seemed to be teasing. "I'm Theia. This your territory?" Even if it was, she didn't sound horribly apologetic to be in it. Damn right she wasn't. If it was his, then he was doing a pretty poor job of making sure that no one unwanted stayed out of it!

Lifting his head, he let the ends of his mane soak up water. The yellow tips turning a dark golden color. "You are correct then in that statement." His eyes were half lidded as he stared off into the distance, not concerned at all about whether or not she decided to approach or even attack. He wasn't a foal anymore, Kosomot could handle himself. For now the majority of blood had been washed away save for a few small spots he still could not reach. Only a good roll in a deep pool of water would rid him of those. So for now he payed them no mind. There was always time for that later. "And I don't roll in it, like you might assume. Sometimes play time just gets a bit...messy."

With a flick of his slender tail, he emerged from the water. Standing on the brook's bank as beads of the clear liquid trailed down his skin. And in one quick motion he shook his body, re-leaving the cool water of its temporary home on his hide. "Hrmph." He wasn't a lecturer, at least he was sure he wasn't. No, he was just stating the facts. Valarauco was the lecturer. "Now who's the lecturer?"

Kosomot's teeth gritted hard, creating a slight grinding noise as she put his lines into question. His head snapped instantly towards her and his eyes narrowed into small slits. The stallion was proud of his heritage. If he had been anything less than pure he would have killed himself long ago. Disgusting half breeds polluted his kind, making it weak. "Yes, I'm pure. Pure as pure can be, and very damn well proud of it. And I can only assume that you are of pure blood as well, other wise I'd have to kill you where you stand. Disgusting half breeds make me sick." An eyebrow raised just slightly as she questioned the lands owner. "Kosomot, and no, this isn't mine. As far as I know no Kalona patrols these parts. It wouldn't matter anyway. I'd go through it even if it was."

Hm, no fun at all, was he? Her tail swished lazily back and forth before she easily skirted out of range when he shook himself, absently using over-large wings as something of a shield to keep her dry. Hot as she was, being splattered with bloody water wasn't her idea of a good time. "Says you." Like she didn't know about it--her mane was even longer than his! She instantly noted his change in mood, grinning wickedly while bright eyes flashed with malice. "Lighten up! What, you aren't the kind of guy to just take it easy? Worse than my brother." Fachtna was always stoic, always in the mindset of what he thought was a 'good' Kalona. Hell, she was going to be the best Kalona there ever was--a legacy that would be remembered for al l time--and she knew how to tease and play around a little!

The stallion's thick head suddenly snapped in her direction, and Theia resisted the urge to cackle, instead tossing her horned head to tell him that she wasn't afraid. "Never. I come from one of the proudest Kalona families in existance. The only half breeds I've ever met made a good meal for the wolves in the end." She rustled her wings faintly as he introduced himself, and a faint snort of amusement rumbled in her chest. "Hah! Good--maybe you aren't so uptight after all." Well, this wasn't so bad then. A little conversation never hurt anyone.

"So, Kosomot... Where'd you hail from, then? Never seen horns like that before." She had to wonder--what good would they be in battle? Hers, long, sleek, and crimson, were quite useful for impaling and scraping up whoever got too close. What, would he just headbutt them?

The mare had started to get under his skin slightly. Telling him to lighten up and all that stuff. "Obviously your the kind of mare who likes to push her own little personal quips on others." He flicked the end of his tail quickly in a half circle once before moving to lean casually against a tree, rubbing his side against it lightly. Kosomot shared the same views of what made a Kalona as his father, its was one of those things that had been drilled continuously into his head as a child. Not having much experience with those outside of his father and sisters had made him fairly short sighted.

A small smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth, parting them and revealing those razor sharp, blood stained teeth that hid so well behind them. "Heh, one of the proudest Kalona families in existence? And just what has your family done to be so proud of? And don't give me crap about just being pure blooded." His eyes flashed mischievously for a second. "Give me a good reason as to why. Surely they must of done something to be so proud of. Of course, I've probably never heard of them so they must not be that pronounced in their deeds." His smirk widened just a bit. "Except perhaps in sending you out into the world with that mouth of yours. Ah! I get it now! Though I'm not sure why anyone would be proud of being loud mouths."

"Where do I hail from? You mean land or blood?" The stallion looked up briefly, thought indeed it was fruitless to really try and see his horns as they wrapped behind his ears and down the side of his head.

"My personal quips are more important than most people I meet, so why not?" Theia countered with a leer, listening as the tree groaned a little when it accepted the stallion's weight. It was true, however. She'd been raised with the nation that her family stood above all the others, Kalona included. It took not only brawn, but brains to survive, and a clear mind laced with cunning was a value held highly. A flash of fang caught her eye, and Theia stood idly as he sought to not quite insult her family.

"Careful darling~" She crooned, circling closer to snap playfully at one of his cracked flanks. "If you insult my family, then that gives me all the right to proclaim a whole bunch of s**t about yours. Then you'll get mad, snarl, demand some sort of silly fight to reclaim honor and teach me a lesson..." There was definitely a malicious twinkle in her eyes now, and the Kalona mare drew herself up smugly. "Our honors and ideals have kept us strong, of course. While the rest of the Kalona population wants to frolick about with lessers and disgrace themselves, we keep trying to keep our blood untainted. Pure blood doesn't mean you're a true Kalona." A grin came, her tail flicking a little. "Not my fault if you live under a rock and we tend to keep to ourselves--it's not like we run around shouting it for the world to hear! Take it or leave it--there's nothing wrong with enjoying a little conversation before you rip your prey's throat out, after all."

The sight of him actually trying to catch a glance of his own horns made her snigger, shaking her head as though she couldn't quite believe it. "Mm, both."

He half listened to the majority of what she said. Really only listening to enough to keep up with this little conversation she seemed determined to have with him. Eh, Kosomot supposed he'd tolerate her for just a while longer. Seriously it was the first time in a long time since he'd talked to others so the break in the monotonous silence was welcomed. As much as he probably hated to admit it.

The n** she had given him to his flank caused it to shiver and twitch briefly. An uncontrollable thing really. Her sharp teeth had come fairly close and if she had wanted to she probably could have ripped a hole into him. But that was fine, if she had decided to latch on the mare would have gotten a right quick kick from his back leg. "I'm surprised you didn't. Do you always hand out warnings to graciously?" The stallion shrugged lightly. He hadn't let on what his family was like so there really wasn't much she could say that he couldn't brush off. If she mentioned his mother or sisters well, he probably wouldn't do much of anything. He had no attachment to them. As for his father, it would depend on what she said. "Whats the point of being proud of your ideals if you cannot share those with others who may benefit from them?" Another smirk appeared on his dark lips. "Its not my fault you like to hear yourself talk."

"Land wise I come from the North Eastern mountains. My father's territory along with the small valley and forest below them. I rarely hang around there much now a days, nor do I believe my father wishes me to stay there all the time either. As for blood I was born of Valarauco and Zulimar."

She snorted with untold amusement at how he twitched a little, knowing quite well she could have inflicted more damage. But, yes, his hoof would have smashed into her face, and then there'd be trouble. It probably wouldn't sit well with her family if she killed a seemingly "okay" Kalona, huh? "Our race doesn't need more culling." Theia interjected idly, her tail tearing jagged patterns in the earth. "Depends if you're actually going to listen or not, right? If you're just going to mock, what's the point of telling you?" She snickered, tossing her head to offer him a bold stare of her own. "Talk is cheap. You can say a lot without letting a single thing slip..."

The young mare idly stretched her wings as he spoke in turn, offering an idle glance towards where the mountains stretched over the horizon. "You've wandered quite a bit." The names were unfamiliar to her, and despite the seemingly indifferent toss of her head, she stored them away for later. Valarauco and Zulimar, huh... Maybe her family knew them? "Our family stays in this stretch of forest--though the herd itself has a much larger territory. My parents are Malice and Toku."

Theia mused to herself for a moment, eyeing Kosomot with open scrutinty. "So? What's brought you here? Or are you searching for your own scrap of land, too?" She was out here to get away from the familiarity of her family, as it were. What were his reasons?
PostPosted: Wed Jul 23, 2008 8:06 am

Kosomot ignored her little interjection. All Kalona had a different opinion about their race and what should be done about the filth that ran through it and claimed to be a part of it. At least he figured. The Kalona were not of a collective mind. His prejudices were of his father and his own that he had built over the years. But he was not as much as a radical as Valarauco. The older stallion was pushy with his views and opinions sometimes. "Well then I guess it depends on what you have to say if I would listen now wouldn't it?" He chuckled lightly.

Red eyes turned towards the mountains that his father called home. Memories of the icy winds as he played along the steep pathways that wound and twisted their ways upwards as a foal came flooding back for only an instant. "I guess." He half listened to her talk about her families territory, herds, her parents. "Hm, yep. Never heard of 'em."

His gaze briefly turned back to her before shooting off in some random direction in the distance. "No reason really. I go where I want and wherever the day takes me I guess."

"I get the feeling that it won't matter much." She replied with an amused snort, giving her head a toss in a vain attempt to get some of her mane out of her face. "Listen up! What we believe in.... Well, it basically boils down to this: just because you look like a Kalona doesn't mean you really are one. Too many of 'em getting frisky with lessers or just growing soft in general. Sooo... What's important is rebuilding the Kalona race, in the end." Theia shrugged idly, her teasing grin fading to a more quiet sort of amusement. "As Kalona, we should have both strength and smarts. I'm still... well, kind of looking for what 'makes' a true Kalona, I guess. Nothing beats experience."

She yawned faintly before half cocking an ear to catch his reasoning for being out and about. "Sounds boring. No lifelong goals you're trying to fufill, no quest for vengeance you're on? So far, it sounds like you respect your father a bunch... No trying to better yourself in his eyes?" The female flicked her ears forward with a nasty grin before she chuckled and lazily made to circle around to the stallion's side.

"Interesting as this conversation's been, unless you've got more to say then I'm probably gone. Might catch you again if you're hanging around here." Theia nipped at his flank again with a chuckle before shifting casually towards the trees. Like she was gonna stick around for long when things were boring! Besides, she couldn't quite make up her mind if she was hungry again or not...
