Alyna wandered through the tall grass, headed away from home for yet another adventure. Her restless heart hadn't been able to stay at peace for long, but she had managed to hang around long enough to be a part of her siblings childhood, and that was an accomplishment at least. She had gotten to play the role of the big sister, and as fun as that was, when her younger siblings had gone to make their way in the world, Alyna had chosen to leave again as well. She could not deny her wanderer's spirit any longer.

And that was how she found herself strolling peacefully in the tall grass, feeling the soft prickling tickle of it's blades stroking her fur. She walked the same path that she had trod upon the first time she left out on her adventure, but she intended to veer off course in a few days. After all, this path led to some of her fondest memories...and a trip down memory lane was most refreshing.

Nirvana moved lightly and quietly through the grass. His energy wasn't the boundless exuberance of a normal colt but neither was it the restrained stillness of his father. His was something more open and yet more deliberate. He was excited and interested by what he saw but didn't feel the need to cavort around to show that excitement... not usually, at least.

Coming to a patch of grass that was tall enough to brush the bottom of his belly, Nirvana paused. A wind was blowing and with it the grass all around him tossed and turned like the oceans he had never yet seen. A smile lit up his face at the strangeness of the sight. What could be the cause of such a thing?

He looked across the grass to see a strange mare threading her way through and coming in his general direction. And who was she? Knowing curiosity but not caution he moved from his spot to head towards her.

What was this? Alyna glanced up to see a small blue foal approaching her. He looked friendly, so Alyna gave him her brightest smile and called out to him. "Hello! I'm Alyna! What's your name?" What a lovely blue color. It almost reminded her of...but no, that wasn't possible.

Alyna grinned happily. She hadn't expected to meet anyone today. And so soon after she left home! It must be her lucky day. Oh, how she loved meeting new Soquili. Everyone she had met recently had been adults, though. She wondered if she still knew how to relate to foals, as it seemed an eternity since she was one. What if she had forgotten what it was like? Panic coursed through her body, before she stifled it, remembering that it hadn't been that long. She would be fine...she would just be herself, and whatever happened, happened. No worries.

"My name is Nirvana."

He stopped in front of the new mare and looked up at her with his deep red eyes. For a moment he didn't say anything, just regarding her with a calm curiosity. The look he gave Alyna was eerily similar to one that his father had given her when Karma had been no bigger than Nirvana was now.

But that moment passed. Nirvana's face lit up in a smile that was unlike his father's distant expressions. "Your spots are very pretty," he said with a quiet warmth. They were unlike anything he'd ever seen on another soquili, not that he'd had many to compare so far.

Such an odd colt...his actions brought back memories of another young colt, the same eerie silence, the same tranquil gaze. For a moment, it was like staring into Karma's eyes again, and Alyna's breath caught in her throat. It wasn't possible! It couldn't be...could it?

No, certainly not. The colt didn't look exactly like Karma, and Alyna wasn't about to believe something just because of similarity...surely there were several other colts out there who were like Karma. Okay, so that was highly unlikely, but still! And this colt most definitely was NOT Karma. He didn't possess wings, and his markings were very different...and he was a tad more blue than Karma was. But there was definitely similarity between the two...and that expression! It was Karma's, most definitely.

Then she realized that she had been picturing Karma as he was when she knew him. Of course he was grown up now...she wondered why she hadn't realized that sooner. Still, there was such eerie similarity...she had been caught off guard, and her imagination had leaped with hope. Alyna had been searching for Karma...perhaps it was her many months of searching that had led her imagination to such lengths. And it was undeniable that the foal was remarkably like the colt that Karma was...

At least he was until a bright, 1000 watt smile appeared on the colt's face. A sudden flash of warmth, unexpected, but not unwelcome. Alyna smiled back, flattered by his compliment. "Why, thank you! I'm glad you like them. I'm rather fond of them myself...although I didn't like them much when I was younger." Alyna laughed, remembering all the times she wished she could change her spots to something else. "I don't remember why I didn't like them...perhaps it was that I thought my coat dull, and compared it to those with beautiful azure coats with beautiful markings."

Young as he was, Nirvana caught none of the emotions he so briefly awakened within the mare. For a moment she had an odd expression, but Nirvana paid it no heed. The actions of his father in his youth were far from his own experiences and Karma hadn't been vocal enough about his past experiences for him to have any inklings of connection from that source. This experience was like any other for the young colt, new and interesting.

"My family is all blue, like me." He smiled again but then paused to reconsider. "Father has beautiful markings... but I like blue too... and your spots!"

After his burst of talking, Nirvana fell suddenly silent. It was as if he'd run out of words, or was in contemplation. He hadn't met this mare before. Should he be acting more polite towards her?

Alyna's heart skipped a beat. Beautiful markings? "Um...by any chance...do you know anyone named Karma?" It couldn't be...Karma, a father? It seemed so...so odd, so strange! And just the thought that her friend was a father...it suddenly made her think of her experiences in a new light. Maybe Alyna was robbing herself of motherhood by traveling all the time. It was something to think about, that was for sure.

But who? Who would she settle down with? Or, rather, who was worthy of settling down with. Because Alyna had met many who she liked, but not enough to stop traveling for. Wandering was in her blood...and it would take a special kind of stallion to be able to get her to stay and settle down somewhere.

Nirvana blinked in pleased surprised. "You know my father?" He looked over Alyna with renewed interest. Who was she? An old friend of his father's? Certainly not a relative. She didn't look like him at all and his father hadn't mentioned having any spotted sisters.

Though feathers waved gently on his head where his father had forelocks, he looked much alike to Karma in his slender legs and watching eyes. He lifted a leg to scuff a hoof into the ground and revealed the faint markings of cloud wisps upon them. Though the more dramatic of Karma's markings may not have passed along, Nirvana still showed evidence of his father's lineage.

"K-Karma's your father? Oh, boy." Although she had suspected it, it still came as a shock to hear her suspicions confirmed. "I...I'm an old friend of your father's. I haven't seen him in ages, not since we were both foals..."

Noticing the small cloud marks, Alyna smiled. "You know, you look more like him that I had realized...um...so, how is he these days?"

So what if Karma had settled down with a nice mare? It...it didn't affect her in the least.

Even Alyna knew she was lying to herself if she truly believed that. True, she was happy for her friend...but it made her feel like she was missing out on life. She could have been a mother by now. Seeing Nirvana awakened some neglected part of her...the maternal part that had been pushed aside in favor of adventure. Perhaps if she had settled down, her children could be playing with Nirvana, swapping stories, and having adventures like she and Karma had.

Her reaction sparked curiosity in the colt's mind. She knew his father but didn't really seem happy to hear about him. Had they been friends... or the opposite? He couldn't imagine the feelings that she was actually experiencing but his young mind tried to make sense of it his own way. Maybe they had been friends but weren't anymore. That'd make someone act like that, right?

"My father is good," he said it slowly, still somewhat uncertain about how to continue from there. "I... could take you to see him?" If she was his friend then she'd want to see him. If not, it probably meant they weren't friends anymore and he ought to leave her alone...

Alyna had to stifle a laugh. Yes, this colt was definitely his father's son. He had that same uncertain, slightly confused expression. She wondered if she was really all that perplexing to deserve such looks from both of them.

"Of course he is. He was my best friend when I was a filly. But then we lost track of each other, and haven't seen each other since then." His next question made her breath catch in her throat. After months of searching...she could just walk up and see Karma again? Somehow that seemed too easy. Even though she wanted to go with this foal...it just didn't seem like the right time to her. But how would she explain that to Nirvana?

"I'd really love to see Karma again...but...I don't know how to explain it, but I just have this feeling that it isn't the right time yet. That something has to happen first, before I can see him. I don't know why that is, but I don't think I'm supposed to go with you just yet." She sighed softly, wondering if she was making a mistake. But she trusted her gut instincts...and now she knew where to find Karma whenever it was the proper time.

While she was talking, Nirvana's head cocked to one side. He still didn't quite understand it. He felt like he almost did... but almost wasn't all the way there. She knew and liked his father but didn't want to see him yet. So they weren't angry at each other but also weren't seeing each other.

Adults were so strange sometimes.

"That is... all right," he said with consideration. He scuffed one hoof along the ground in a gesture of young uncertainty. She was his father's friend and not his own. That distinction made knowing how to talk to her a little strange for the young colt. He looked back up at her, feathers waving gently on his head. "But I can tell him I met you?" Was it a secret? Would she not want him to?

Alyna chuckled. "Of course you can. And tell him something for me, will you?" She grinned at him. "Tell him that one day, when the time's right, I'm gonna come looking for him again." Alyna didn't know why she didn't think it was the time to see Karma, after all, she had been sort of looking for him. But it wasn't like she'd never see him again. She smiled at that thought. And, who knew, maybe there was a legitimate reason for her to wait to see him. "And tell him that he has one fine son, while you're at it. It's been a pleasure meeting you, Nirvana."
