If there was one reason for Kaleb to come to the Shin'ra office building while not on business, it was the training rooms. Usually he preferred the park for his practices, but staying a little too late past early morning hours usually brought too much attention to him and his magic. His angelic features were often enough to earn him stares anyway, the last thing he wanted was regular people seeing the portals and the floating and all that stuff...

So enchanting the items and equipment in the training rooms to attack him became one method of choice for practicing his shielding. Unfortunately today he had to give it a rest when a particularly nasty basketball got past his shields to knock his legs out from under him, and he was nearly clobbered by a punching bag.

The little healer made sure the items were returned to their original places before limping back up to the lounge, grabbing an ice pack from the freezer, and flopping down at the table. He would take a few minutes to let the ice work on his aching leg and then portal home, if he wasn't careful he'd forget about it and be in worse shape the day after.

He made his way into the lounge as he did on most days, having finished his own bit of 'training' for the moment. The new gun he'd been asked to test out had a bit more of a kick than he would've liked and now his shoulder was trying to protest... Easily ignored, of course. He'd just put something on it when he got home.

He paused, leaning down to pull a bottle of water out of the fridge before glancing up only to find himself wishing that he paid better attention to his surroundings when not in some sort of danger. "Hey, Kaleb." He waved the hand not holding the bottle of water, eying the ice pack. "Rough day?"

Kaleb's ears had perked when he heard footsteps behind him, but his usual uneasy expression turned into a smile when he realized it was just the new guy entering. Garin seemed to be distracted, but at least the little mage wasn't sitting quietly for too long before he was noticed.

"H-hi," he replied, following Garin's line of sight with a little bit of confusion until he realized what the 'rough day' comment had been referring to. Then his confusion quickly shifted to a sheepish blush. "Ah, no, it's okay. I-I was just a little off my game today, and not concentrating as well as I should have been..." He rubbed his neck. "How have you been doing?"

"I..." He paused, thinking for a moment as he went about choosing his next words. "Good." He nodded slowly. "I've been good. Getting adjusted to everything around here... Except for some of the weaponry. I'm going to have to just pull my standbys out of retirement at this rate. A lot more reliable and I don't have to worry about pulling anything after a shot."

He gestured towards the chair after a moment. "Mind if I sit down?"

If Kaleb had any thoughts about Garin's pause before replying it didn't show in his smile. "That's good," he said, while waving for the other to take the chair if he wanted it. He had been resisting putting his feet up on the chair from the start, it just wasn't the kind of thing you were supposed to do while at work wearing an expensive suit.

His smile faded to concern. "You haven't hurt yourself, have you?" The little healer asked, fidgeting with the ends of his tails.

"Hurt? Me?" He snorted softly, dismissing that thought with the wave of his hand as he sat down, reaching into his pocket to pull out a deck of cards. "Not at all. Just tired of playing with guns that fight back. Thought I'd get a break and some water... And play a game to pass a bit of time between now and dinner with Noelle."

"Sorry," Kaleb muttered sheepishly, realizing he might be stepping on the limits of Garin's pride if he pressed the issue. If nothing else it would leave him wide open to questions about why a healer with enough skill to work under Rufus would be simply putting ice on an injury.

"You can play card games by yourself?" Kaleb asked, curiously watching what Garin was doing with the deck. He could only assume Noelle was Garin's girlfriend or wife, and quickly squelched a pang of longing for having someone to eat dinner with again.

"Solitaire." He nodded slowly, shuffling the cards into a bridge before working them together. "It's easy enough to just turn cards over and align them by suit... Makes things a bit easier to play other games if someone else is around." He smirked, glancing up over the frames of his glasses at Kaleb. "You're not a card player, are you."

Kaleb shook his head, but the answer probably would have been obvious just by how intently he watched Garin's shuffling. To the little mage it always seemed like only magic could make the cards bend and settle together so quickly and easily, but he knew it had to be just a technique. He probably couldn't even mimic the effect with his magic.

He continued to shuffle, watching Kaleb instead of the cards as he did so. "How's your math? Can you add numbers up easily?" His brow lofted as he waited for a response.

Kaleb blinked, surprised at the question that to his knowledge had nothing to do with card games. "I-I took university level Calculus, b-but I-I never really liked it," he replied quickly. Math and formulas were necessary for some of his magical research, but that was usually his last resort when he ran into a problem that needed solving.

"Naw, cards don't have anything t'do with that stuff... I meant simple math. Adding and stuff. Knowing which numbers add up.. Five plus seven and all that?" His brow lofted slightly as he continued to shuffle, now doing a more simple shuffle than the bridge.

"Y-yeah, I can add things like that," Kaleb said, once again fidgeting with his tails. Was Garin being serious? It would be tedious having to rely on a calculator for simple things like that, if he had difficulties with mental math it could be attributed absent-mindedness rather than poor math skills.

"Good. Then you can play cards." He nodded, quickly dealing two cards to each of them, setting the deck on the table between them. "Name of the game is Blackjack. The objective is to get your cards to add up to twenty-one, or as close to twenty-one as you can get without going over. Jack, King and Queen are all worth ten. Aces are either one or eleven, whichever suits your hand better. Sure way to win is by getting blackjack; which is a ten, Jack, Queen or King with an Ace." He paused for a moment, picking up his cards. "Got it?"

(( Roll two d10 for your first two cards. From there if you'd like to draw an additional card in your next post generate a random number from 1-11 (two chances for aces that way XD). ))
