We went yesterday to take the 2 ferrets from the couple that were not caring for them properly. Anyhow, things were as I suspected...
Charley and Pepper were not only neglected on several levels, they are underweight and have lost quite a bit of muscle mass. The lady gave me a bag of stuff she used with them, 2 small hamster food bowls...2 dirty cat toys...a sleeping area that as old as they are (2 years) and smelled of pee (She had them sleep in it on the cage floor, and nothing else)...a big bag of uncooked rice (WTF?)...and some mostly used "care" products I wouldn't use to even wash my car let alone a living animal. We asked her over 3 times each what she fed them...finally she told us..."I give them rice, cat food, marshals, and they love cereal." I knew it! *Swears about these people*
When we got them home, we set them up in a clean cage with proper bedding...and I gave them a good size bowl of food...however I knew we were in for trouble when they treated the food as a foreign object. So I took chicken baby food and mixed in warm water...I syringe feed them every 2 - 3 hours now. I need to give them water shots.
Tomorrow we are taking them to our ferret shelter to get checked properly and to get ADV tested. As soon as we get negative results we can let them play with our other ferrets. So lets all hope for the positive for these 2 kids.

I think some people go for the "cool factor" of having a pet without thinking about what kind of care and work it takes.
Which I can't stand...

That's why I only have a fish XD...but he takes enough care having to change water and watch the temperature and all that.
Still a dog and 2 cats live here so i'm content with them

Dave is right...its the "cool" factor...until the novelty wears off and they realize they have to feed this creature.
Poor Charlie and Pepper are over 2 years old....as she told me they were bought early 2006. I do not believe her. I know things she dun think I know.
Anyhow...these people are close to becoming hoarders. 2 dogs, 1 lizard, few fish, the 2 ferrets we took...and who knows what else they had recently. I know they had, yeah, had a bunny.
Something I did not mention before...both has this, but Charley is worse..his canine teeth are missing the ends. They look as if they either broke off, or were filed down. He also has horribly discolored teeth too.
Pepper has a couple deformed toes due to the nail overgrowth.
Both have a hard time moving their hind quarters, so they seem to hop more than a usual ferret...this is due to muscle mass loss...feeding and movement will fix that though.
And Charley seems to fear males a little, so I think the husband hurt him...as he has no aggression towards females. But that too is fixable.
Honestly...most of their problems that I can see will be fixed with food, water, play time....etc. Just good TLC is all they need. As I held them I promised they would never go through that sort of life again. I just hope they test negative for the ADV so they can play with our others. I will keep you all updated, weather you wanna be or not. And I will get piccys tomorrow before we go to Barb's. I will post em tomorrow at some point. =3 But I should go get sleep, we have an early day.

J Lone Wolf That's why I only have a fish XD...but he takes enough care having to change water and watch the temperature and all that. Still a dog and 2 cats live here so i'm content with them When I managed a pet store I would get a lot of calls...you would be shocked what people even did to fish. U___U

Poor babies! It hurts my head to think of people having pets who don't deserve them or don't know how to take care of them. The main reason we don't have any pets right now is because we can't afford them and we know better. *sighs*
But it sounds like they are in good hands now. That makes me glad. heart

Anya darling...I know you are a thousand percent more responsible than people like them.
You admit the cost is too much....she has 6 kids of her own and 1 or more of other babies from family members. I dunno...people like em make me sick.
And now that I think about it...last I knew they had 3 dogs...where did the 3rd go? -___- I think I will call the aspca.

I know of a lot of people who've had pets and really shouldn't have... if you can scarcely afford to feed yourself and your kids then you really can't handle animals... I've not owned an animal since living on my own, but growing up with two cats who got sick on several different occasions showed me just how not-cheap it is to keep them healthy. But then again my mom took care of our cats like they were her kids too. 3nodding

6 kids and a bunch of animals they can't care for. Sounds like some nasty trailor trash to me.

Omg, that is sickening, me and my friend used to know someone who used to miss treat all of her of her pets, she used to have a puppy, a kitten and a litter of rabbits all of which used to stay outside both day and night and were all horribly underfead and the puppy and kitten also had flees. When we found out how bad they were treated we called the RSPCA and my friend took the kitten in.
