It was a cool night as the patriotic fox padded down the road, neon lights around his neck marking his arrival. Various earings and trinkets tapped together with every step and his tail, wrapped around a box, swayed back and forth. He stopped in front of the Lucky Noodle, before poking his head inside. "Anybody hooome?" he called casually. He frowned as he received nothing but his echo. Stepping outside again he placed the small, wood box down and opened it. Idependence Day may have already passed, but that wasn't going to stop him from celebrating it. And though he might not have access to fireworks, he still had the next best thing; sparklers. Removing a stick from the box, he held it out and pulled a lighter from the breast-pocket on his shirt. Carefully clicking the lighter, he tilted the stick into the flame. He watched with glee as the tip began to sparkle. Twirling it around he began to sing into the night,

"My country, 'tis of thee,
Sweet land of Liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrim's pride!
From ev'ry mountain side,
Let freedom ring!"

She liked being out on cool nights like this. Actually, she liked it a lot. It was just the right kind of night for fireworks, and though she had none, she could clearly envision them bursting across the sky, leaving trails in her eyes and making night into day. Her ears twitched, the nights sounds wonderful in the thick silence; the chirp of crickets, the thrum of peeper frogs, and the long, low sound of a song, pleasant and gentle on her ears.

Wait.
A song?

She stood and looked around, her ears twitching again, and she began to make her way towards the sound. She could begin to make out the words, now, and she smiled to herself. Only one male would sing that song (or, one male she knew of), and he made it sound beautiful. She peeked around one of the bushes near the stand and watched him for a time, her eyes moving from his face to the box to the sparkler in his paw, and when he finished his song, she sat down quietly and made sure her ribbons were loose enough to twirl. And then, she filled the silent gap with her own song, mixing with the crickets and the frogs and the soft hiss of the sparkler.

"If tomorrow all my things were gone,
I'd worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife.
I'd thank my lucky stars to be livin' here today,
'Cuz the flag still stands for freedom, and they can't take that away."

Ever so gracefully, she twirled from behind the bush, the ribbons sashaying in a way that made them seem to blur together, and when she stopped, she stood to face him, smiling. "Would you like to continue with me, Patriot, or shall I sing by my lonesome?" She would not ask him to dance, for she did not know if he were the kind to do so, and instead she continued to twirl, the glowing sticks around her paws and neck leaving a trail in the darkness.

Earrings clinking together as his ears perked, Patriot listened in awe to the familiar song that had started so beautifully. His orange eyes glinted in the light of the sparkler. There was only one fox he knew that would sing that song so freely, and the only one that could make it sound more magnificent than it already was.

He grinned as the vixen revealed herself in front of him. "Though I'm not sure if my voice can sound as lovely as yours, Crossette," he replied. "I couldn't possibly pass up an opporitunity like that~" He watched her twirl gracefully, her ribbons seemed to swirl in her rythm.

"I'm proud to be an American
where at least I know I'm free,
And I won't forget the men who died
who gave that right to me,"

He sang as he fell into step behind her, the sparkler tucked into his wristband. From the flow of Crossette's ribbon, to the red, white, and blue blur-like halo of the glowstick atop her head, Patriot concluded that one did not need wings to be an angel.

"And I gladly stand up next to you
and defend her still today,
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A."

Finishing the chorus, he twirled around the vixen to face her once more.

It was beautiful.
The very deep, rich tones of his voice were like electricity in the night air.
And, together? It was a firework of it's own kind.

She laughed brightly at his comment, her paw steps steady and graceful, her eyes slipping closed as she fell in tune with the music that came from his heart. She joined in, taking the higher octave, sensing more than hearing him fall in step with her. She didn't need to open her eyes to enjoy the moment, nor did she need to feel anything but the rush of the wind on her face and the earth beneath her paws. She could hear nothing but their voices, joined in harmony and freedom, and she silently wished that the world would not stop spinning.

The chorus nearing it's end, she began to stop, and she opened her eyes slowly, a smile on her lips when she realized he was in front of her. "I don't know what you mean, Patriot. You're voice is like the gentle strum of a guitar," she said, a reply to his earlier statement, and she placed one paw in front of the other, as if to twirl again. However, she sat instead, in a very delicate manner, and smiled a cheeky smile, giggling lightly as she did. "Singing with you is an honor. Shall we finish the song, or did you have another in mind?" she asked, tilting her head with that same pretty smile.

No, she was not an angel. She was a queen, for Patriot was a king.
A king of freedom with a heart of gold.

He smiled softly as Crossette's voice joined in unison with his own. Her voice alone was a sonata whispering through the star-spangled night. It was brilliant. Had it been a firework, her vocals would be the light that illuminated the sky with a lustrous intensity. Spirits were so up-lifted in the moment that Patriot nearly had his breath taken away.

A fire-orange gaze met ice-blue as Crossette stopped in front of him. "Well," he murmured with a soft grin. "While you may compare my voice to that of a guitar, deep and electric, I must say yours succeeds that of a harp, light and gentle." He chuckled as she sat instead of twirling again. "As to you," he purred softly before seating himself. Removing the burnt-out sparkler from his wrist-band, Patriot placed the stick on the ground and glanced up at the stars in thought. Closing his eyes, his smile remained. Though the song may not have seemed patriotic to some, it was very popular during the times of the American Civil War.

"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see."

If he were the king of freedom, then she were the majesty of liberty and justice for all.
The majesty whom had reserved the king's heart.

He made her giggle. Every little sentence, every little look, every little note in his songs made the world spin and the stars become sparklers. While he near lost his breath, she near lost her sanity. The moment had been wonderful, with twisting and twirling ribbons, the swaying of tails and the soft hiss of the now burnt-out sparkler, and she silently wished it hadn't ended. Her tail curled deftly around her paws, and she watched him for a time, lost in those eyes of his.

Fire-licked met winter-chilled, and time stood still for a while.

She smiled softly, her tail twitching. "Who knew that classical and rock could get along so well?" she countered, and then laughed gently. She followed his gaze, staring at the stars as the night grew deeper and darker. They were always there, she realized suddenly, watching and spinning, ever dancing. It was merely the sun that drowned them out, merely the bright light of day that made them hide away. They were like herself, with a natural like of the darkness. Her ears twitched, and she looked back down at him, his face creased with a smile and his eyes closed. She sighed inwardly, and felt herself swaying to the song, her own eyes closing and her chest rumbling with a deep, satisfied purr. And once again the night air crackled and popped with the electricity of their mixed vocals.

"T'was Grace that taught,
my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear,
the hour I first believed."

Then perhaps she was all of those things; Angel, Queen, Majesty.
For he was certainly just as many, if not more.

People would often follow the saying 'Opposites attract'. Although that didn't seem to be the case with the two patriotic foxes as their interests joined in unison, perhaps all it took was the opposites of fire and ice to make their eyes meet.

He grinned as she brought up another good cause. Rock and classical music usually never mixed well. But when Crossette's harmonic voice blended in with his, something fantastic was created. His tail brushed along the ground before wrapping around his paws. The star charms on his tail tapped toghether. The night sky would be nothing without the stunning stars that dance across it's eternity. Each one lead the way through the darkness and put hope into those wh were lost. Patriot began to sway too as her vocals joined the song, making it rich and complete.

"Through many dangers, toils and snares,
we have already come.
T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far...
and Grace will lead us home."

Perhaps he was the night sky, and Crossette was the brilliant star that illumated with a shining hope.

Opposites?
The only things opposite on this night were the earth and the sky.

She could hear the star charms braided into his tail fur clack together as he wrapped his tail around his paws, much as she had done, and very softly, she peaked out at him. He had his face to the stars and his eyes creased lightly by the smile on his face. If she didn't know any better, she might say that was a jester's grin, entertaining the stars above them. Perhaps they were both jesters, offering the night sky some sort of reprieve from the rest of the world. The thought made her smile again (had she stopped smiling at all this night?), and as he took up the song once more, she carried it again, with lighter waves and hues than his own deep, melodious tune.

"The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
as long as life endures."

A brilliant star, perhaps. But he was the moon, brightest and biggest in the night sky.
Both intimidating and utterly breath-taking.

Patriot turned his gaze to Crossette again. The moonlight bathed her pelt with a radiant sheen, making her white fur glisten silver in the light. It glowed with hardiness and valour of red stripes, and vigilance, perseverance and justice of the blue. But most of all the white pelt reflected purity and innocence of the white stars and stripes that represented the glorious American flag. And defiantely more.

"When we've been here ten thousand years...
bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise...
then when we've first begun."

As the song began to near it's end, he didn't want the moment to go away.
Just standing in Crossette's presence was receiving the beauty of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' all at once.
