Ian wasn’t quite sure when he was born. But then, unlike most seconds, he couldn’t actually remember being born. He couldn’t even remember much of a change in state between unborn and born. Asleep before birth, during birth, and after birth, it was hardly a wonder he preferred to spend most of his time alive … asleep.
Had he once had a guardian? Even he didn’t know. He knew that no one had ever fed him, and that the only time he ate was when he was too hungry to sleep … he knew that it had taken him a long time to drag his vase to the river’s side so that when he was thirsty he wouldn’t have to go far for water …
Did this lazy little Second grow fat at all, doing nothing but eat, drink, and, most of all, sleep all day? No … because even if he didn’t know it, he was badly malnourished, bordering on starvation. Even if he didn’t know it, he needed a miracle.
He needed to be found.

 Serenity Aldrich Winters
Ian's mother. She took care of Ian when he was close to starvation, nursed him back to health, and adopted him as her son. He loves her very much and will do just about anything for her.

Found
Lately, it had been getting harder and harder for Ian to wake up at all. Sure, it had always been difficult for him to get up and be active, but lately even just opening his eyes seemed like a chore. He had no strength to find food; he barely had the strength to crawl down to the river for a drink of water every now and again. He knew he was sick; he just didn’t know why or what to do about it.
Then the day came where he couldn’t even crawl back into his vase, but lay there, half in and half out, feet out in the air, his head in the comfort of his home. There, he fell asleep, his body and mind so exhausted that he didn’t even realize the position he was in.
The next time he woke, it was dark – not only inside, but outside as well, when he gained the energy to look over his shoulder. Or was it dark outside, but inside as well when he looked over his shoulder? Suddenly he was very confused. It was equally dark on both ends, and the air he was smelling was … fresh … not the stale air of the inside of his vase.
He could smell something … something he had never smelled before. He followed his nose until it poked against something soft and warm … he didn’t know what it was, but it smelled good. He nibbled off some of it, and then promptly fell asleep once more.
When he woke again, it was light, and he could see now that yes, he had his head towards the opening of his vase, and his feet were safely tucked inside. He looked at the food that had been left for him, and in the daylight he could recognize it as a sandwich – despite the fact that he had never had one before. He ate as much as he could – about half of it – and then fell asleep again.
The next time he woke up, the remains of the sandwich had been taken away and replaced with a ceramic plate of carrot stick and celery sticks with a thick brown substance that he knew he was supposed to dip them in but didn’t know what it was called. He found out later – much much later – that it was peanut butter. There was also a thimble of a white liquid, which he also learned much later was milk. He felt much stronger this time around, and he ate about half of everything before falling asleep, and the next time he awoke the supply had been replenished.
Things continued on like this for several days – or wakings, really, since he never knew how long he slept – and then one day he finally had the energy to get up and walk around a bit. He ate the entire plateful of food – quite an appetite, considering how unhungry he had used to be – and then ventured out of his vase and looked out at the world around him. It was bright, and he rubbed his eyes as he looked around – and when he looked behind his vase he rubbed his eyes again and looked more closely.
There was someone there.
He froze. His first instinct was to flee, but his body wouldn’t let him. And so he just stared at this giant of a girl. She was … unbelievably tall … she had long brown hair, gray-green eyes, and a kind, warm smile, and before he knew it, he found himself relaxing.
“Are you all right?” the girl asked him softly.
Ian jumped, startled. It was the first human voice he had heard … that he could remember. And yet, at the same time, it seemed quite familiar to him, as if she had talked to him before.
He nodded at her, then licked his lips and asked in reply, “Are you the one that gave me all of the food?”
She smiled brightly. “Yes,” she replied quietly. She looked around a bit, then clasped her hands in her lap. “What is your name?” she asked him softly.
He looked up at her and shuffled his feet in the grass. “Ian.”
Her smile grew wider. “It’s nice to meet you, Ian,” she told him warmly. “My name is Serenity.”
Ian felt a warm blush creeping across his face despite himself. “Hello, Serenity,” he said shyly.
For the first time in a long time (or rather, for the first time since he could remember), he wasn’t sleepy enough to go to sleep … and to tell the truth he didn’t want to leave Serenity now. She had shown him such kindness, it wouldn’t be nice of him to sleep again and leave her wondering about him. But at the same time, he had never interacted with anyone before, and he didn’t know what to do, what to say …
But Serenity solved that problem for him.
“Do you have a guardian?” she asked him.
He shook his head. “No one has ever taken care of me except for you,” he told her, lowering his eyes sadly.
He was surprised when she moved to sit closer to him, and held out her hands to him, and he looked up to see that she was smiling brightly at him, her eyes sparkling with – hope? Happiness?
“Would you like me to take care of you?” she asked him softly, her tone hopeful.
Ian smiled and reached his arms up to her, nodding shyly.
She laughed. “Then you can call me Mother, if you like,” she smiled warmly, picking him up and hugging him. “And I’ll take good care of you, Ian.”
That was just fine by him.

1 September
You know ... I think I have to have the coolest Mom in the world. I mean ... when I was all by myself, she brought me loads of food and drinks, she made me all better, she took me home, gave me a home and a family, she's always teaching me so many things, she's really nice, she gives lots of hugs (good ones!), and she takes me visiting places, too! Like, she has this friend, Kanki, in the Seconds world, where she found me. He's really nice, we went to visit him and he gave us ice cream! And he let me jump on his bed, and we had a tickle fight, and a poke war - it was loads of fun!
Yeah, I love my Mom. I want to do something for her ... she likes pictures, maybe I can draw her one. Maybe one for Kanki, too! He's really nice.
