The Reason For Your Death

What do you think?

My Opinion
Stretcher Match

Inferno Match(Why Not Buried Alive Finally Was)

Buried Alive (without the casket where you actually struggle to throw the opponent into a hole and use the shovel to bury them as a minigame as they try to climb out.)

Last Ride Match(Hey Smackdown 08 had a scene in the parking lot with the van when you had a finisher and threw the opponent against the green van and hit the finisher button you opened up the back took a casket out and threw them in it then put the casket back in and shut the lid as it drove away for the KO.)Bet you didnt know about that.P.s. its the same van when you throw them against it and hit the right trigger you punch there head into the glass.

Ambulence Match

An Actual Casket Match

Punjabi Prison Match

A roster that is as updated as possible

Tribute To The Troops Arena

WWE Legends

Eddie G

Hulk Hogan

Honky Tonk Man

Ric Flair

Bret Hart

British Bulldog

Jim Neidhart

Road Warriors

ECW Legends

RVD

Balls Mahoney

Tommy Dreamer

Sabu

Sandman

Justin Credible

Taz

Mike Awesome

Bam Bam Bigelow

All Matches Should Be Playable Under Extreme Rules

Make The Controls Like in 2006 agian

And that along with what we have seen so far would make the game incredible to me.

Seriously there's no point to making a new Buried Alive, Ambulence, Last Ride or a Casket match, since Ambulence and Casket would have the same minigame, and what is gonna be the Buried Alive minigame? The bar goes back and forth and you have to get the bar to the top so you can shovel faster? That's like doing a cracked up Cage Match.

No Tribute to the Troops Arena.

All matches played under Extreme Rules, well I would accept the wheel in most of the matches but come ******** on dude, you think that would sell? Just have normal matches and Extreme Rules go over Hardcore Match because they were the exact same thing just minus the pinning on the outside for ER.

Half of those guys wouldn't even get close to being in the game for ECW Legends like Balls, Justin Credible, or Mike Awesome because WWE (( Or any one else besides the other morons that want them in )) doesn't care about them!

And what the hell is the Inferno gonna be like?

@ KBL - I Disagree with you yet respect your opponent.

@ Harli - That was funny

I think with hardcore matches you should be able to choose what weapon you want to use when you check under the ring instead of it always being a chair, barbed wire 2x4 or table.

The Roster should be at least close to being updated.

The Classic Titles should include the Winged Eagle WWE Title, The Classic WWE Tag Titles, classic IC Title, ECW TV and Tag Titles.

SvR 2009: More on Inferno Match, finishers, tag teams
Time 16:42 on 2008-07-13
Go Back - Comment this new

IGN.com recently was allowed to play with Smackdown vs Raw 2009 for about an hour and they could experience the new tag team features, create your finisher and the much anticipated Inferno Match.

The Inferno Match

It's something fans have wanted in their wrestling games ever since two lost brothers locked arms in the infamous match at Unforgiven 1998. It's the Inferno Match. IGN tried CM Punk vs Matt Hardy in this new match type. Entrances proceed as normal, Punk enters with his shirt that more naturally clinges to his body now, and after his entrance we wait for Matt Hardy's. Well, this year you don't have to wait anymore, since there are no more loading screens between entrances. As Matt Hardy enters the arena, we see CM Punk's face with the fire enlightening his face for more realism. A nice feature here is that it's a video game so in this case the ring is on fire, not some metal contstruction around it.

As moves get more and more devastating the temperature will rack up to 500 degrees. How can you tell? There is a small indicator at the bottom of the screen that will exactly tell you how hot the ring is. It starts at a bone chilling 300 degrees and works its way up to 500 degrees as your momentum meter goes up. As flames rise, the screen also gets a more reddish look and it's not wise anymore to go for any bumps against the ring ropes. When it hits 500 degrees, that's the moment you want to drag and drag your opponent into the ring.

If you're dragged into the fire, some buttons will appear on the screen, and you have to tap the correct buttons. It's no longer a bash fest of all buttons to escape. If you're unable to tap the right combination of buttons, your opponent will get the chance to do one final move. You either reverse this or get out good ol' JR's barbeque sauce, because you're done (medium rare). If you lose this match you'll see your superstar rolling on the outside of the ring and freaking out for a period that seems an eternity to the little guy before guys put him out with fire extinguishers.

Apart from a new style of match, a nice addition here is that when the camera zooms in, all moves will look cooler. CM Punk locking in the Anaconda Vice with the glare on his face is described as one of the coolest shots ever for the franchise.

Create your finisher

Another thing that was asked for by fans was the ability to create your own finisher. It seems that you can string together a sequence of 14 moves/segments to create the finisher you want. It'll depend on your fighting style, whatever moves are available, but around 500 moves each style should be at your disposal. You can choose to start your finisher immediately, do a taunt first, or perhaps a set up maneuever like kick to the gut. The reporter for IGN decided to start with a kick to the gut, and when he saw the final version of the finisher he was not happy. The kick to the gut wasn't fast enough for his liking, so he went back to edit the finisher, and set the speed of the kick to 150%. It seems THQ really made an effort to make Create Your Finisher detailed enough so almost anyone should find something to his liking.

The new tag features

A first feature of tag matches that could be helpful is that there is only one momentum meter. If you're a tag team, you gain momentum together. No more thinking "I'd like to tag in my partner, but then I lose my near finisher status". When you tag in your partner, your partner picks up where you left, if it's a full momentum bar, it's a full one, if it's an empty one, he'll have to start from scratch.

IGN guys decided to try the tag features as Matt and Jeff. Of course they enter the ring simultaneously because they're a stable. Other superstars, not in a stable, will enter inidvidually. One thing that was noticed immediately is that there are now tag team finishers. You can set up a specific tag finisher for the stable you created, and you have a choice of about 20 tag finishers. In this case, there is a video delivered of some of the boys' action, and we can see Matt going for the Twist of Fate, while Jeff is already standing on the turnbuckle, signaling to the crowd the Swanton Bomb is coming. The Twist of Fate-Swanton Bomb-combination is the only known tag finisher for now.

Hot tags can be made when you have a full moment meter bar. You can see Jeff making the final dive to get his brother in. Matt then runs inside the ring and knocks down the active opponent. He will then continue to run towards the inactive opponent (in this case it was Mysterio) and at that point you have to hit a specific button. Hit it at the right time and knock Mysterio off, miss it, and Mysterio wil knock you down and kill off the hot tag sequence.

Last of all, there is more activity for the inactive player. He can crawl around both sides of the ring of his corner, and do some moves at rightly timed moments. For example, Matt irish whips Mysterio, but Jeff is awaiting Mysterio and pulls down the top rope. Instead of bouncing back, Mysterio will fall out of the ring.

Fighting styles

Fighting styles were a new addition to last year's edition of Smackdown vs Raw. However, back then they were too limiting. If you were a dirty heel, you could remove padding, otherwise you could not. This frustrated some players, and therefore THQ has removed these specific actions per fighting style, and now everybody can do strong irish whips, remove padding, hit their face open with a steel chair and more.

However, each fighting style now has specific "special abilities", below are some of the known abilities.

Possum Pin: Same as last year

Dirty Pin: Use the ropes for leverage

Hardcore ressurection: Hit yourself with a weapon and actually heal, like last year

Object Specialist: A proficiency with weapons under the ring

Submission Specialist: Make people tap with "normal submission holds". If John Cena is no Submission Specialist, he can't make the opponent tap with a headlock even if their heads are in full red. However, he can make them tap to the STF-U, since that is his finisher, not a normal submission hold. This adds more to the realism of the game.

Kip up: Yes, the move made famous by The Rock and Shawn Michaels is in this game. Once a match you can use this and let your superstar kip up. The momentum meter will instantly fill and you are momentarily damageless.

Resiliency: Compare it to "Damage Resistance" in this game. You don't have to activate it by pushing a button somewhere during the match, but for the length of the match, you just don't go down as easily as guys who don't have this ability.

Fan Favorite: And El Valo's favorite so far. You start clapping your hands, you hear the crowd clapping its hands. The crowd clapping gets louder and louder, until at a point the noise is so loud the opponent has to cover its ears and you can get a free shot in.

Some extra small features

-Enter the ring through the steel steps. Let's be honest, when The Great Khali gets back into the ring, he won't use the ring ropes. Usually, he'll take his time to slowly walk up the ring steps because his opponent was beaten down by his amazing force anyway. In Smackdown vs Raw, you have the feature to also re-enter the ring through the steps, rather than "rolling in".

- More realistic sound: Announcer lost that weird echo they had, and the referee's voice seems to come more from "inside the ring". Also, the numbers popping on the screen during a pinfall seem to be gone.

- More crowds: No longer watching the same crowd every match. THQ has programmed four different crowds that will alternate.

- Pin finishers can no longer end in a rope break. If you're The Undertaker, you don't have to worry about dragging your opponent to the right place. Do the Tombstone Piledriver, and the game will automagically make it so the opponent is not lying near the ropes.

Well, it was a long news report, but this just covers anything new about some of the newer features of Smackdown vs Raw 2009; and hopefully fans of the franchise will enjoy the report nonetheless of its huge length. For even more information go to IGN.Com for articles, pictures and videos on the game.

- The new animation for finishers is no longer seeing the move from three angles. When your finisher hits, at a given point, the screen now shatters like a piece of broken glass. Personally, I'm a bit skeptical here, but the guys from IGN claim it's an upgrade from last year.

If only we could update the roster with online browser, that would be great, but it won't happen.

The Roster should be at least close to being updated.

The roster should be the last thing they do, just so they can have the latest updates on the roster when they do it. Just think of when we had Booker T, Cryme Tyme (since they've been released a while before the game, but I was happy to see them in), Masters, Morrison as Nitro, Cor Von, McCool entering as the teacher in SvR 2008, just to name a few "mistakes" of the game.

My idea for story mode:

You create a wrestler as normal. When you're finished, you become a free agent and can go to any number of independant federations (not necessarily real ones, could be things like Bay Area Wrestling Federation, New York Championship Wrestling, throw in a non-area-specific name here and there like Nitro Pro Wrestling), where you face created wrestlers like you did in dev in Day of Reckoning. There could be new ones included in patches through Xbox Live. The feds have their own titles and rosters, and some of the guys could be brought into WWE. No voiceovers, so you don't have to worry about not having actors to play the characters, and this mode of mine might fit. You play minigames to up your stats, not "do X action Y times" like last year. For example, a weight-lifting timing game for strength, or a submission hold/break "simon says" game for submission. Injuries would put you out of action for a certain time, when you would be unable to train but could increase your out-of-ring notoriety through interviews and the like.

When you make it to WWE, the story takes an apporach similar to Here Comes the Pain, with backstage elements like Adam Ryland's PC game Wrestling Spirit. You can forge relationships with other wrestlers, manage your career, train, and edit your character. If you want to go from a clean-cut babyface to an ultraviolent heel, you can do that (provided you're not involved in a storyline where a turn would be impossible at that time). Since you control your out-of-ring persona and behavior, you can become a celebrity like The Rock or Stone Cold, as well as a behavioral problem for the company. If they feel you're not ready, they could send you back to FCW or the indies. There would be a Madden-style career tracker so you can see how close you are to becoming a legend. It wouldn't be as tedious as last year; you could do it in many more ways, like interviews where you can choose responses, or classic television segments.

Ultimately, your goal would be taking your wrestler from the independant scene to a successful WWE career and then retire. Upon retiring, you'd get some kind of stat screen that displays your final wins/losses, greatest matches (based on a number of factors, not just popularity of wrestlers involved), whether you were a better face or heel, what kind of gimmick you were best known for, and your greatest acheivements (based on a point scale...like 15-0 at Wrestlemania would be higher up than one WWE Championship. Also, the longer your title reign the more points it's worth). You could call it Boyhood Dream mode or something like that. Course, this is all really exapnsive and in-depth, but damn, would that make a great game. Hell, release it seperate and I'll buy that instead of SvR09.

this is smackdown vs raw 2009 not boyhood dream wrestling. but that is a good ida just for the record just better as a seperate game.

-better caw system... alot more stuff.

-be able to us songs and videos you have saved on your PSP/Ps3/Crapbox etc etc...
I mean, most of the systems (if not all) can store music and videos, let us use em!

-More cutscenes in story mode! 06 had the idea! but in 08, you'll be lucky to get 2 or 3 cutscenes in a whole year!

-MORE WEAPONS!! chaos is always fun! ^^p

- for the 'update roster' thing everyone seems to want, how about WWE lets you go onto their website, and download the new wrestlers that you want?

-more moves in the moves list! in 08, they removed the high spinning kick that kennedy sometimes uses. when i tried to give him that move, OMG! its not there!
