if this doesn't belong here, feel free to move it.

Alright, so, I finally got round to buying a new bed.
This one.

And I want to decorate my room accordingly. There is a ton of antique furniture in my house that I never knew about until a week or so ago (I want my mum's brass microscope so badly!). And it got me thinking.

How does the rest of the steampunk community decorate their houses?
I'd love to know!

(I'd also love to know which wall colours go with brass and black...)

It's really not too difficult to decorate a room. Just use your favorite colors (because anything can go with brass and black) and fill it with objects that you love and that fit your theme. There's a thread floating around on brass goggles that should give you a bit of inspiration. Ross and Target actually have some nice steampunk furniture and accessories, though the quality isn't always great.

I recently updated my own bedroom to look fairly steampunk (though I didn't realize that it was steampunk until half-way through planning the update lol ). My main colors were brown, blue, and purplish-red, with plenty of dark wood and brass accents, since I find myself naturally drawn to those colors and finishes. I basically kidnapped a bunch of matching furniture that I liked from other rooms of the house and I brought out all my matching accessories (since most of my belongings already reflect my aesthetic preferences). My pre-existing collections of historical art prints, old books, swords, woodcarvings, and other knickknacks all worked with the steampunk theme. I left my walls as they were (I'm most comfortable with white walls) and arranged everything in the way that was the most practical for me (for example, if you tend to leave piles of paper by the door, that's a hint that you should put a desk or filing cabinet there). The items I found myself drooling over in stores also tended to fit in with a steampunk theme and my scheme of preferred colors, so shopping was pretty easy. Basically, I set up my room to cater to my personal needs and preferences and everything just slid into place because it all matched my rather steampunky tastes. I may not have a clockwork maid, cogs painted on my walls, or velvet-covered furniture from the 1800's, but my bedroom gives off a warm, welcoming, steampunk vibe, which is all I had wanted and more. As long as most of the things you like mix well with steampunk, you could use a similar method of simply following your preferences when decorating your room.

I am waiting for my sister to move to another room before I can redecorate. I'm going to go for a victorian-esque looke, while also keeping the asian vibe I have now. It'll be interesting to try out, but I hope it'll all work out in the end. xD

Ooh, Steampunk Orient...I like it!

My mind is racing with ways to possibly decorate with that idea in mind...It sounds cool!

Adding new hardware and light fixtures is definitely cheap ways to change the feel of a room. I've found some pretty spiffy chandeliers at garage sales, and occasionally even goodwill/other thrift stores.
I "redecorated" my room a few years ago just by refinishing my furniture and adding new knobs to my dressers/closet doors. Then I got some brass lightswitch and outlet covers, and matching curtain rods. It looked totally different, but only cost maybe $150 and a bit of physical labor.

If only I didn't have to share my room with my two sisters.... We can't agree on anything xd

Um... I have a green room, I was going to decorate it Lolita style but I might put a Steampunk twist. I think I have an old Victrola that I can convert into something... some of my dad's old furniture. And machines.

My entire portion of my flat is going to be steampunked very soon, and when that's up I'll post a picture. Within the next month though I'll plunk down a sketch of what it all looks/will look like pirate

I didn't realise how Steampunk my room was until half-way through redoing it. My walls are deep orange and red, with a brown and gold border, giving an almost oriental vibe. I then put my bed into a bunk bed style, allowing me a small, almost-hidden-secret-lab space to do my beadcraft in. All my furniture is walnut, and most of my accessories are walnut, gold, or antique brass. I painted my radiator gold, and bought a cover that matches the wall, so that it looks almost like a fireplace cover. I also found a brown leather reading chair, and finally, I bought a lot of candles!

For some steampunk lights, I'd recommend B&Q (if you're English) as they do some really nifty velvet lightshades, and some wonderful techy brass lamp stands.

You could also look arounf for monochrome or sepia art prints, and frame them in dark brown frames.

And get yourself a reporter's lampshade. Y'know, the ones you see in detective movies? With the green glass biggrin
