A horse at my yard gets very bad laminitus on grass, he goes completely lame, but he as a sore on one heel which I'd say is effected by constantly living in. It's lumpy, cracked and sometimes there is puss, he doesn't go lame from it and it's not quite greasy heel or cracked heel but it is of discomfort to him. He hardly gets ridden but now it's summer my friend is riding him for the owner, she's concerned about the sore on his foot though. Any suggestions?

It's sounds like the hoof wall is separating from the laminae. Your friends should NOT be riding the horse if it has laminitis. That's horse's coffin bone is going to go right through the hoof wall and the horse will have to be put down.

Tell them to get a vet out or else. Contact animal control if they don't do anything. If it gets bad enough the pain and infection can kill the horse if not make it permanently lame.

I am not overacting, laminitis is a very serious disease.

Get the horse off grass and grain and call the vet. Now. Laminitis can kill a horse, and only colic kills more horses than laminitis. The more you wait the worse this is going to get. If you can, get the horse in a stall with deep bedding to take pressure off the hooves. Nobody should be riding it. That's only going to make it worse. You might want to make sure it can get water, because if the laminitis is very bad they probably won't want to walk very far to get a drink. You said grass caused it? Was the horse just turned out on pasture all at once without getting used to grass, or is it just very prone to laminitis? If the problem is the latter, you can take it off of pasture permenantly and feed it a low starch grain that provides the nessicary energy without so many carbs. There are several grains like that on the market now. Laminitis is serious, and damage happens quickly. You need to get a vet right now.
