Although a rather mild day for the time of year it was, sky half-littered with the overcast of clouds, it was still a very pleasant atmosphere. After all, the birds were very vocal and the park was buzzing with the tune of numerous voices; it could uplift anyone's mood.

Fisk sat at the edge of his favorite pond, off a bit from the traffic of the park. It was much quieter in the partially-hidden glade, but the chattering was unmistakable, if a bit muffled through the trees. Someday, he mused, he would venture out there, but it would be best if he knew what he was doing before he took that step. For now, he was content where he was, with his feet kicking at the pond.

Propping himself up on his arms as he sat, Fisk leaned back to look in through the lower part of the canopy of trees. The sun was barely able to shine through the obstacle of overlapping leaves and misty clouds both, but still spattered an interesting pattern on where it was able. It almost annoyed the mer at how quiet it had been lately, but perhaps he was just asking for too much. If he didn't make an attempt at socialization for himself, then he shouldn't be thinking it would just come to him. He was able to before, but...

He shook his head lightly, smirking a bit. A bit of déjà vu there... he noticed, realizing this was the same thought pattern he has been on for a while now. Procrastination wasn't a very good attribute to have, and whether or not he's improved his outward appearance from whence he first started trying was no excuse. He pulled one of his feet from the surface of the water, but paused before he stood on his second. His body just seemed to... freeze, as if something was keeping him back.

His mouth tweaked backward as he watched the colors of the water shift subtly at the movement, realizing what it was that was holding him. "I thought I was over this," he muttered, sighing and seating himself back down as he slipped his foot back into the water. The last time he had tried to leave the pond he was so accustomed to for any lengthy period, things fell short of pleasant. Fear... He snorted lightly. It always seemed to get the upper hand in everything.

Merric liked to think nothing had changed about him in his year-long absence. He still woke up cheery almost every day, and tended to think the best of people (given what he knew of them, if anything) until proven wrong. Admittedly however, a tone of melancholia had colored even his very skin in his loss. He missed the shop, he missed the park and his strolls and his favorite lake. He missed his favorite anthros (and even those who despised his forward nature), though he had been used to seeing them infrequently. It was the fact that he could not choose to see them that bothered him so much. He could not run into Shin unexpectedly and he could not count on an encounter with Fisk at their shared place of respite. He was lonely for the first time that he could recall, though he had once been alone for many years.

One of the things that bothered him the most was the thought of Fisk alone during that whole time. The lionfish-marked mer was among the shyest people he had ever met. Would he have ventured out alone during that time? Would he have tried to meet others? Had he finally conquered his fears? Or... had he gone back into hiding?

Never once did he worry that Fisk had "found someone else." What a ridiculous notion. More than that, he was just too confident for that kind of worry to mar his psyche, though it had been brought up by others...

He usually stewed in his tank at the end of the wing for days on end. He had spent time with the other mer in their company, Misu, but usually he remained alone. The other mer's love of nature fell into other realms... they coexisted but did not usually interact. This was when he was not helping with the house, that is. He could only do so much in either form, mer or short-lived humanoid form, especially since he had to keep so hydrated.

But enough of that. He was finally free to relax, explore, and meet people, new and old! And what place would he go first? His favorite park, of course, for a walk and a visit to his favorite spot. He steeled his mind; he knew Fisk would not visit that place every day (though of course, he either did not know or had forgotten that he practically lived there!), and had to remind himself that it was not likely he would see him today. He told himself he would have a great time whether he saw him or not... but he was hoping, strongly, and could not keep himself from disappointment if he missed the other mer.

The day was pleasant and everything around him spoke of optimism and happiness. It only heightened his anticipation, no matter how he tried to suppress it. There would be none of that, of course it went against his nature! His mind was racing. He could hardly keep his pace at a walk, there was always a spring to it. He would settle down once he got there.

But as he neared the pond, Merric heard movement every so often. Kicking. Splashing. Was it possible? Maybe it was just a group of ducks... He turned around a bend in the path, just your typical faintly green-skinned guy with long hair and bizarrely purple eyes - all right, not so typical in that respect - heart thumping in his ears and craning his neck to see.

He saw... well it was certainly a scene from the past, and for a moment he had to wonder. But at least now he could be certain that it was Fisk and he was still struggling and he wished he had been there for him all this time.

He approached the pond unable to speak, until he reached the water's edge. His mind swirled around the same subject, tears welling up in his eyes. Fisk... it's Fisk...my Fisk... Finally, he found his voice, a toneless croak that sounded nothing like him. "Fisk..." He fell to his knees in front of the other mer.

Fisk reached a hand to the water, swishing the ripples around to watch the play of the light on the surface. He had himself propped up with his forearm across the upper part of his knees as he contemplated his own thought process. Maybe I should find a better hobby, he pondered as his eyes followed the dancing waves. He had no idea what that hobby would be, but it would probably be better than practicing without results on his human appearance. He still had the faint markings like stripes up and down his legs, the fins at his back like peculiar wings, finned ears... he couldn't pass at being human like this. Not that it was much of a problem, seeing as there were plenty of anthros that wandered about without regard to how different they looked. He knew it wasn't a big deal, but he had never really considered doing anything else, something that didn't make him so frustrated.

He blinked as a new image appeared on the surface of the water, and he jumped when he realized someone was there. He had been so deep in thought he hadn't considered someone might be around! Glancing up, he froze in shock as he took in the familiar view with wide eyes. He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing formed.

As Merric fell to the ground, Fisk swung his feet out of the water without any forethought on how he felt about it before, and crawled the rest of the distance between them. Flinging his arms around Merric's shoulders, he refused to release his grip for fear he was just imagining it. But no... his mind wasn't that cruel to him, especially confident now that he could feel him within his grasp. "Merric!" he managed to gasp, a combination of so many emotions rolled into a single word.

After a brief pause, he asked as a wide smile grew across his face, "This... This isn't a dream, is it?" He slid one arm off of Merric so that he could reposition himself and look the pale-haired mer in the face. He pressed his forehead against Merric's cheek, hoping that he would understand that Fisk was happy just to have him here now; he could never find it in himself to ever be angry at him. "It's okay, I'm not going anywhere."

A moment passed before Merric could properly respond, and even then his wordlessness prevailed. Wrapping his arms around Fisk after the other mer had repositioned himself, he simply held him as hot tears finally spilled down his cheeks, dampening Fisk's forehead and chestnut-colored hair. "No, it's not a dream. I'm sorry Fisk, I'm so sorry..." He kissed Fisk's forehead and pulled away with a frown. "Ugh..." Wiping his tears from the other's face with his sleeve, he chuckled. "I've wept all over you..."

That seemed to break the spell he was under. Wiping his own face clean, he pulled them both to their feet, holding Fisk by his upper arms. His brow knitted together lightly as he stepped back and looked Fisk over with a shrewd eye. "You've been working on your human form, haven't you? It looks good," he added with a grin and looked the striped mer-man in the eye. "Ah, I've missed you so much..."

(( Because I completely suck at replying in a timely manner. DX <33 ))

Still latched on tightly to Merric with one arm, the striped mer held himself from jumping when he felt the tears meet his forehead. It was painful to see Merric so upset, even though what had happened was an unavoidable situation. Fisk didn't even need to ask about it; he already knew that if it was within Merric's power, he would have visited Fisk here. It was made even more apparent with the way Merric reacted to seeing him here.

Releasing his grip, Fisk moved his hands to prop himself up on the grassy earth as he watched the pale-haired mer gather himself. He was concerned, and his features showed this plainly, but he found himself smiling when Merric wiped the tears off of Fisk's forehead with his own sleeve. "It's all okay, if it helps," he replied, before his smile turned more serious. "You don't have to apologize; I knew you'd come back," he added, almost at a whisper as his hands fidgeted under the weight of both his upper body and his own words.

In any other instance, the motion of pulling Fisk to his feet would have made him uncomfortable, the feeling of touch still being quite alien to him. However unlikely the events were to lead up to this, though, Fisk felt completely safe around the other mer. Almost all of his jittery nature went out the door, and although shyness still crept in in the form of few spoken words from time to time, it wasn't the same kind of shyness; more out of habit. In Merric's presence, Fisk didn't feel any reason to fear much of anything he normally would.

A hand went to rest on the top of one of Merric's own at his shoulder subconsciously, partly in reflex to the rising motion. He blushed at the comment, grinning broadly. "You really think so? I didn't know if it was very noticeable," he chirped happily. This was one instance where Fisk was glad he was wrong, even though he had just about given up on the work.

He snuck back over to lean into Merric, pulling him back into another hug. Before he had met Merric, the feeling of touch never really seemed very imperative. It may have been just because he never really tried before that, but it was something he had really missed. "I missed you, too! I'm just glad I don't have to miss you any longer, knowing that you're safe and sound. I was worried," he said, nearly stumbling on his words.

(( Argh... I could probably add to that if you need me to. ^.^;; ))

(( No worries Moogz, I do too... x_x;; <3 ))

"It does. But I don't ever want to do that to you again. I suppose though, the one good thing about being away is how striking your progress seems to me. You probably didn't even notice because you were working at it all the time."

He was mildly surprised when the other mer hugged him. That was unlike Fisk... which proved to Merric beyond words that Fisk had indeed missed him. He hugged the other mer tightly and just held him. "I worried about you too... you have no idea... or maybe you do," he said, pulling back just enough to look him in the eye.

Fisk snickered a little at Merric's comment about his human-like appearance, not because he didn't believe him, but due to the fact that he was probably right about it. He glanced down breifly at his own legs, marked with faint but very visible stripes like scars, covered partly by the tan capris he was wearing. "Now that I think about it, I think you're right," he mused. He couldn't help the grin that was taking over his features; not only was all his hard work not in vain, but now, the frustration over it didn't seem to matter at all anymore.

"Sure I do," Fisk remarked, giving Merric a return squeeze when he had pulled the auburn-haired mer in closer. He was trying to lighten the mood a little, with as few conversational skills as he had. This was a good day, and a happy reunion.

However, Fisk was just a little too curious to hide it for very long. "So, what's been going on?" he asked with a smile. How long had it been since they had last seen each other? In truth, the extent of time that had passed really didn't matter. Nevertheless, Fisk hadn't really served much of what one would call a "normal life," so couldn't help but be a little intrigued. He cringed a little at his own reaction and bit at his bottom lip. Was it a bad time to ask that?

“Ah...” With the other mer’s inevitable curiosity piqued, Merric could not help but want to answer, in whatever level of detail as Fisk wished. In fact, he was about to reply when he paused, frowning a little. “Well, as you can no doubt easily imagine, quite a lot has transpired in all this time! Can you believe it has already been a year? But of course you can...” Again he took pause, considering with how busy they both had been these past months it could seem a short yet interminable amount of time! There was so much to discuss. “Would you prefer to sit down? Perhaps on a bench, or back at the water’s edge?”

He grinned as he peered back at the tiger-striped mer. Now that their heart-wrenching first-again meeting was over, he was ever so happy. No single word that came to mind could properly encompass all that he was feeling at this moment. Or perhaps there was. Right now, clinging mellifluously with Fisk by the water’s edge in their little glade, he felt complete.

Fisk blinked, growing wide-eyed when Merric had mentioned how long it had been since they had last seen each other. "Really?" he asked, turning to glance around as he chewed lightly on an index finger in thought as he mumbled, "Only that long? It seemed longer..!" It shouldn't have surprised him so much. After all, over the past year, each day had seemed to be unnaturally long!

He rocked a little before leaning back into the platinum-haired mer, considering his offer. Although he was still uncomfortable to wander away from the water for too long, he was up to going anywhere, as long as he was with the person most important in his life. He smiled, "If you'd rather sit on a bench, I have no complaint." He knew he needed to be more daring, less reluctant to change the same monotonous days of the past. In an effort to let Merric know he wasn't just trying to be brave about it, Fisk wrapped his arms around the other mer's waist and pulled him toward the direction of the closest bench. It wasn't exactly under the cover of the glade, but under the circumstances, that didn't seem to matter in the least.

"Are you sure?" No, best not to second-guess Fisk. "Tell me if you begin to feel uncomfortable and need to go back to the water. Even if I'm mid-sentence, I want to know immediately."

He was surprised by Fisk's resolve. Elated by the progress he had made. Guilt-ridden that he had not been there to help him through this. Just a year ago, Fisk had been traumatized by simply stepping out of the water for a few moments. Now he was leading Merric away from the water. What horrible trauma he must have suffered alone! Clinging to the other mer even after they sat down, Merric smiled and kissed Fisk's hair. "I am so proud of you. You should be too."

It took him a few moments to gather his thoughts, to pull them away from this and to look back on their time apart. "Where to begin..?" How much to tell him? It was not as if there was all that much to tell. Yes, a great deal had happened, but it had become a routine. Most days had progressed thusly: waking up, floating sleepily and moping around in the pond, eating breakfast. Transforming and helping to rebuild. Eating lunch and moping some more. More rebuilding, spending some time in the afternoon or evening with Misu that amounted to pregnant silences. Dinner, moping, sleep filled with dreams about Fisk. It was so much and amounted to so little.

"Well, you see... the place where I live is a building that looks like a house, but it is so much more. And then it caved in on itself..." And so began the story that everyone that lived at the Nullspace found himself telling.

The striped mer nodded decidedly, grinning as they headed toward the bench, "Of course!"

Upon reaching the seating area, Fisk caught himself on clumsy feet before he fell on Merric, hand steadying himself as he sat down. He blushed slightly, knocking on his head lightly to symbolize his clumsiness. "Still not used to walking around," he elaborated before leaning in to snuggle against the front of Merric's shoulder as he pulled Fisk into an embrace.

Closing his eyes contentedly, he replied, "Well, I'm not sure of being proud of myself, but I know I'm making some progress." His mouth tweaked as his eyes wandered up to Merric's, "You want to know how? I was able to because I wanted to be able to be with you, see the world with you. I can't do that from a single lake." He fidgeted, but not out of being uncomfortable, more out of happiness. Even though Merric wasn't here physically, Fisk felt he had been with him the whole year they were apart.

He loosened his grip and pulled away a little, but only enough so he could hear all of what Merric was telling him. His face contorted into concern, leading to the question, "Was everyone alright?" After all, when one thinks of buildings collapsing, they didn't think too lightly on what could happen to the people inside. It didn't help that Fisk could scarcely grasp the concept of "tesserects" as it was.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 26, 2009 7:52 pm

"Careful, Fisk. You're doing fine, you really are." Merric worked to steady him but the striped mer was doing well on his own. The fact that Merric was Fisk's motivation made him incredibly happy. It made being away from him worth every worrying moment, even if he still felt a little guilty over it.

Merric worried again as Fisk pulled away, but was happy that he kept in contact. Now that they were together again, he did not want to let go. "Yes, we were all fine. It is a very bizarre phenomenon, this house, if you would even call it that. Some of us were not inside when it happened, others were away. But the rest of us metaphorically dug our way out. Then we rebuilt the house. It is always being rebuilt though, you see. Now that we can come and go, it seems as if there is someone new all the time, once again."

Fisk's eyes began to drift out over the scenery -- or rather past the scenery -- as he tried to imagine the scene that Merric was depicting. His nose scrunched a little at the phrases that were too difficult to envision, finned ears pulling back. So bizarre... This whole world was, as a matter of fact. How much was he really missing?

Without any real warning, Fisk found himself blurting out, "Do you think I could see it sometime?" Hmm, that was unintentional. Elaborating, he continued, "It's just that... well, you know I haven't been out and about much. I don't know if I can really picture this place accurately. Could you show it to me sometime?" He grinned, despite himself. "I want to be able to see what you see. I don't think I could do that if you weren't with me," he stated, snuggling in closer.

There was so much more that he wanted to say about that, but words seemed to be fleeting. It was no matter, though. He didn't really need to say it.

Thoughts still partially trapped in the past, Merric was understandably surprised by Fisk's outburst. It took a few seconds worth of blinking to adequately process what the other mer was saying. After that he wasted no time in consideration before answering. "Fisk, I would show you any place you wish to go, at any time. I would take you now, next week, in the daytime or the middle of the night, rain or shine. Anywhere, without hesitation." He chuckled at his own firmness of resolve. It seemed too serious for the situation. "Ah, yes, I would gladly show you my home. Whenever you feel you're ready."

Fisk had snuggled closely against him, but he was holding him equally close. I hope I never lose this feeling.

Fisk couldn't help but giggle at Merric's statement, thrilled. I knew you'd say that, he thought to himself, knowing it didn't need to be voiced.

He turned his eyes to look in the general direction of the pond as he thought a decision over. Although they hadn't anything planned to do, there didn't really need to be anything planned; he knew that they both were content just the way they were. However, it would be nice to have something memorable mark the occasion, aside from the fact that it is the first time they had seen each other in about a year. Or was he just being too greedy in that respect? He did want to scope out Merric's home, but would it be very polite to do so on such short notice?

I really have no idea what I'm doing, he thought, amused, to himself. He didn't have to ask himself this, he could always ask for a helping hand. "That would be okay?" he asked, "Nobody would get mad for me just dropping in like that?"
