literature has influenced many bands. ahab and mastodon have both drawn influence from melville's moby d**k. many bands have drawn influence from stoker's dracula and the tales of hp lovecraft. the works of tolkien have influenced many a black and power metal band. michel foucault's writings on the panopticon have influenced isis. there is one band (i forget the name) who even draw influence from stephen king's dark tower series. etc.
what are some of your favorite examples of literature's influence on metal?
what are some pieces of literature you would like to see incorporated into metal?
for me: favorite example would be isis incorporating the influence from foucault. i would like to see a band take influence from albert camus's book "the stranger"

Well, one could say that a lot of folk music is based on the mythologies and culturally important oral and written works of their respective peoples. For instance, Amorphis employs cantos from the Finnish epic poem, the Kalevala, as a basis for a number of their albums.

Iron Maiden have some.
Las Cruces have a passage from the poem Death Be Not proud by John Donne, on the song Black Waters.
The Gates of Slumber have the poem Lines Written in the Realization That I Must Die by Robert E. Howard.

Well a lot of The Gates of Slumber's stuff is based on Howard's characters. And there's that one song "Dweller in the Deep" based on Lovecraft's Cthulu character.

Tierra Santa plays songs based on literature, almost all of them. Some are mythology, some are the bible, some are egyptian. They are a great band.
Anabantha has one amazing song based on Lovecraft's 'the being under the moonlight', and another one based on Neruda's 'poem no. 20'
