Dark, light, cold, hot, it was all the same now, the world didn't change, the colors were the same dull hues... life was no longer worth it. Had the sky ever been as bright as others described it? Had the wind ever felt like the wonderful, gentle, breeze it was supposed to be? Grass, was it ever sweet tasting and nourishing? He couldn't recall ever enjoying his life, couldn't remember the last time he smiled, the last time he laughed, the last time he... felt. He was alone now, a lifeless empty shell that wandered the earth. A waste of space, a waste of time, a worthless being no longer having any purpose. Or at least, that's what he told himself daily.

The sun was high in the sky, blaring down on the meadow in glittery rays of sunshine. The flowers blew in the wind while insects buzzed about in their busy ways, moving to and from flowers and back to their hives. The tall blades of grass twitched at the slightest breeze and many small mammals were scattered about, nibbling on the vegetation or going about their business. If that wasn't enough to make the scene picture perfect, the clouds in the sky surely were. Fluffy and weightless they floated across the sky forming pictures against the vibrant blue background. Sadly, as perfect as the scene was there was one golden grump who failed to notice it...

Andor stood in the shade, his head lowered, dark hair covering bits and pieces of his neck and face. The scowl on his face was less than welcoming, in fact it was almost intimidating... Flies buzzed around him, some landing on his nose and others nipping at his golden coat. A coat that had once shone in the sunlight was now dull and unhealthy looking. Not that the any other part of the stallion hinted he may be healthy... Scars were scattered across his body, his mane was a matted mess, the stallion looked as if he hadn't eaten in weeks and the look was completed with his broken horn. Worst of all, the horn wasn't the only thing that seemed to be broken, no... this miserable stallion also seemed unrepairable.

Meeki giggled as she dove under the group of birds that were flying near her. Dodging them proved difficult at times, but oh ho ho, she always get the upper hand. Oh yes! She'd show those birds just how fast a flutter could go! Why, they'll regret ever challenging her to a race.

It was such a beautiful day, the kind of day that made her never want to stop smiling. Of course, she wasn't smiling now. In fact, she was gritting her teeth because the birds were gaining a considerable lead once more. Were they toying with her? Oh well, she would take it in good sport. They did have stronger wings than her after all, and they were a lot smaller.

She fluttered her wings with all her might and tried to catch up to the birds. Just then, she spotted a stallion under a batch of trees. At least, she thought it was a stallion. It was rather dark and he looked.. frightening. That was the last thing she saw too because in her distraction, she flew face head first into a tree and tumbled backwards into unconsciousness.

For a stallion that barely noticed anything in front of his own nose, he was quick to react when he felt he was in danger. As soon as he realized something was flying through the air at top speed his ears perked and he quickly danced out of the way. His eyes were still dull and lifeless but his body seemed to react quickly to the warning. Before he'd had a chance to get far, far, away from whatever it was, it had flown into a tree and dropped to the ground. Two golden ears pinned back on the stallion's head and he blinked, had the thing wanted to attack him and not get a chance to turn in time...? His body quivered, if something was after him he was out of here! There was no way he was going to end up in the same situation as he had before.

Turning away, Andor began to trot off in the opposite direction until he stopped, what if it was hurt? Well what if he was going to get hurt? He could safely check on it and get the hell out of there, couldn't he..? It didn't look too threatening... and it was kind of small... but what if it had backup someplace? His mind was clouded with so many different thoughts that he couldn't sort them any longer. Taking whatever bravery he'd stored over the years, he slowly moved toward the unconscious flutter to check and see if it was okay. When he saw that it was breathing he slowly backed away, it was okay and now he could go.

Something held him in that spot, curiosity maybe, or it could have been that he'd finally lost his mind. He recalled an innocent foal he'd once met, with similar wings... Quickly shaking the thought, the large stallion turned, once again pausing. Whatever it was, it would be alright, it was breathing, it'd just have a large bump on its head... right? His thought train was going in the right direction but why couldn't he leave?

She had a wonderful dream. She had dreamed that she was a foal again, fluttering around in a beautiful clearing and teasing her friend, Indawo. It was a good dream and she did not want to wake up from it. It seemed like she didn't have a choice though. The dream started to fade and in its place came pain. Her head hurt so much. She moaned reflexively and pushed herself up. It felt like every part of her body was in pain but it didn't seem like much was damaged.

Her head hurt the most and when she checked on her wings, there was some damage to them as well. She wouldn't be able to fly for awhile but they would mend on their own. They always did, even if it took awhile at times.

"That is the last time I challenge a flock of birds to a race," she chastised herself. Where did those blasted birds go off to? Did they not notice that she had stopped following them? "Heartless birds!" she called angrily towards the direction they had gone. She had forgot about the creature she had spotted before her crash and had yet to notice him nearby.

Whatever trust he'd lost in society, and whatever pain he'd been through in his past, he still managed to keep kindness in his heart. So, seeing a ruffled flutter with damaged wings, he couldn't quite pull himself away. Yes, he was in danger and this was probably a trap of some sort, but the thought of something being hurt made him sympathetic. He was sure sometime in his life he'd run into a tree or something, mainly done something to damage himself in some way. Where he was going with this thought train was a bit of a mystery, but regardless he lowered his golden head and peered at the strange mare with curious blue eyes.

Something was nagging at him, telling him to run before it was too late, but he couldn't bring himself to leave her here alone. It was when the thing finally woke up and stumbled to its feet that Andor really backed away and felt threatened. Had he been less worried about being eaten he might have noticed that the mare was quite a bit smaller than he. Had she actually planned to fight him... chances are... she would have lost. But, try explaining that to a stallion that was afraid of his own shadow. So, instead of facing reality, his eyes darkened and he watched the flutter closely. He stepped back, once... twice... and continued to glare. Strange, even though he thought he was in danger he managed to stay.

It took some time for him to notice that the mare wasn't interested in him or rather, seemed not to notice. No matter how long he stared at her he didn't seem to realize that she didn't even notice him. If she was such a threat... wouldn't she have lunged at him by now? Of course, Andor didn't think of this, he just snorted and watched her, eerily, almost stalker-like.

Well, it wouldn't do her well to stand around moping. She had to get out of these woods and flying was no longer an option. She turned to leave but quickly bolted back, startled, when she noticed the stallion nearby. He looked vaguely familiar but she couldn't place it. "Oh, I'm sorry," she gushed while blushing. How long had he been standing there? Didn't he have any manners, just spying on a hurt mare like that?

Of course, she probably looked a mess and shocked him. She probably had all kinds of leaves and twigs in her hair and dirt, goodness, she probably had her fair share of that as well. "I'm not always such a mess.. or a klutz for that matter," she apologized. She hoped he hadn't seen her go right smack into the tree. She must have lost her concentration somehow... but she couldn't remember. Maybe she had just been going faster than her body could maneuver.

"Hmnn, I probably should find a stream or river to wash up in," she hinted. She never could remember where water locations were in the woods. They all looked the same and it confused her.

She'd noticed him! The large, golden, stallion twitched and quivered, ready to bolt at any second. If she wanted to hurt him he'd be out of here before she could come at him. Plus, her wings looked as if they'd been rendered useless and her legs were pretty small. Yes, it seemed he had the advantage and he could get away much faster than she could. He was fine... for the time being... Or at least... it seemed that way.

He kept silent, continuing to stare at her with an icy gaze, although behind those icy eyes was very little emotion. If you could get past the glare, you'd notice the dull, lifelessness he carried about with him covered up by many different things. It was a sad sight, seeing a live stallion acting as if he was no longer living but... it was rare to hear anyone mention it. Something happened then, two golden ears flicked forward as he heard the little mare apologize. Most didn't apologize to him they just pushed and forced their company and opinions upon him. This softened him up slightly so he stopped staring long enough to listen to her speak.

She didn't seem like a threat... maybe it'd be okay to show her to the river...? He'd just make sure she didn't get too close to him... he needed to be able to bolt if necessary. A lion-like tail swished behind him as he pondered the pros and cons of taking her. It seemed the cons outweighed the pros but he was going to take a chance anyways. Why...? He didn't really know.

"River's this way," he said dully and turned, making sure to look back and check that she wasn't going to do anything sneaky.

Well, at least he was taking her to the river. She wasn't sure why he was so rude. Well, rude wasn't the right word really. Antisocial, perhaps? At least following him gave her the opportunity to stare at him for a change. To be honest, he didn't look in any better shape than she did. He had scars all over his body and his hair looked like it hadn't been groomed.. well.. ever! Didn't he have a two legger to take care of him? It didn't look like it. Though she didn't visit her own two-legger very often, when she did, she always left looking ten times prettier. She couldn't wait for another visit!

The stallion before her seemed to be a unicorn as well though his horn was broken off. She found herself wondering if a unicorn could still heal with a broken horn. It would be nice to be able to fly home. Of course, she had learned it's best not to ask about such things. Indawo flat out hated his little wings and asking him about it and trying to get him to accept his differences only made her lose a friend. No sirree, she wasn't about to make that mistake again.

"I appreciate you taking me to the river," she called from behind. "I don't make a habit of flying into trees. I was racing a group of birds and I guess I lost control. I really didn't stand a chance anyway but it would have been nice to have won. They little birds are so full of themselves." Surely a little conversation wouldn't hurt anything?

She was silent for a bit, Andor now feeling self conscious as he felt eyes on him, knowing the mare was watching his every movement. Leaves crunched beneath his hooves, making his ears twitch, his body quivered as he realize she was walking behind him and he had a strong urge to look back. He didn't, instead he moved forward quickly, hoping now they had a good couple of feet between them. Would there be a warning sign, would he know before she lashed out? Was she hiding two-leggers in the bushes, waiting for them to jump out at him? If so they were taking an awfully long time... especially when he was so vulnerable. Why was he helping this mare again..?

Then, her talking cut into his thoughts. He'd expected her to talk eventually, they all did... they didn't realize their plots would have succeeded with silence. No, they insisted on talking his ear off first. It was fine though, let her talk, it wasn't like the river was too far... and maybe when they were there she'd be distracted and he could run. As he thought about this he heard her mention birds, what was she talking about... racing birds? He stopped at that moment, finally looking back at her, uninterested with a blank expression on his face. Then he spotted the wings. Oh, yes, she could fly.

Even though it made more sense, he didn't feel any better. So without saying a word he continued on, walking through the forest. The faster they got to the river, the better, and if he somehow survived that, maybe, just maybe he'd learn his lesson and never offer help to another again. Problem was, Andor rarely learned, or so he told himself, because after all he'd been through he was still helping creatures out, even when they were out to get him.
