Red curls bobbed atop her head as her mother picked her up and placed her in her lap. Curious misty-blue eyes gazed into her mother’s gray ones. The girl flashed her mother a smile from behind rudy lips and hugged her close. She loved her mother greatly, more so after her father’s death. He had been a composer and as such had instilled the same love of music in his daughter. Without him things weren’t the same, and it had been rough for them both. Sometimes her mother had cried herself to sleep and the child accompanied her, grieving for her lost father and the mother whose heart was in pain. Today was different though, her mother seemed happier, and she looked radiant. The child couldn’t help but wonder what miracle had returned the mother she so loved from long ago. Gone were the traces of depression from a lost love and in its stead her mother was able to shine as she did before.
The girl was pulled back from the hug and she looked at her mother questioningly. The woman smoothed the auburn curls, which were a deeper red than her own. “Nicole my sweet, there is something I must tell you. Something wonderful..” The child gazed up at her mom adoration evident in her expectant orbs. She wondered what this wonderful thing was. It had to be good if it caused her mother to change so. “Darling I have someone I want you to meet.” They both turned to look at the door that had been ajar, through it walked a man dressed in gentleman’s clothes. In confusion the child stared from her mother to the man and back again. “Mommy?”
“This is William darling and he will be joining us as part of the family.” Nicole looked at the man suspiciously. “We are going to get married Nicole he’s going to be your da.” The man removed his hat and extended his hand to the child. “Pleasure to meet you Nicole. You are a little beauty just like your mother. I know you miss your da and I wouldn’t try to take his place. I just hope we can become good friends and maybe you will find it in your heart to think of me as a da.” Nicole looked at him with uncertainty. She loved her father and no one could replace him, but this man made her mother happy and returned her to how she used to be. The older woman smiled at her daughter encouragingly and pushed her towards the man. The child accepted it all and locked away the sadness in her heart. Her mother was happy isn’t that all that mattered? She placed her miniature hand in his and nodded. “Welcome sir.”
Her mother married and Will moved them to his villa. All that Nicole had asked from this was to keep her fathers instruments and mementos. Her step dad had disliked this request but at prodding from her mother, he acquiesced. At the tender age of ten, Nicole did not know what fate had in store for her.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
She hated him. He was like the coins used for currency, two faced. William treated her mother so gallantly and did the same for her as well, but as soon as her mother disappeared he would demean her. Her mother was oblivious to it all, especially the surreptitious looks he gave her. Did she not notice the lusting look in his eyes? Nicole had grown up from the ten-year-old girl into a young woman. This was defined all the more by her eighteenth birthday, which had been last week. The event that should have been the most important moment of her life was marred by the sudden announcement of her betrothal to some duke. She refused to marry without love and she would not abide by Williams wishes. He plagued her every chance he got in his untoward and all too friendly manner. Many of the help had, to her relief, interrupted whenever he tried to lay his hands on her, allowing her the chance to escape. Thank goodness for her schooling, it was the only time when she felt safe, for they took place away from the villa. Nicole had followed in her father’s footsteps; sharing his love of music. She was especially good with a piano or flute. Like her father music had become her love and her escape.
Thrashing around in her room she began to stuff a traveling pack with necessities. Nicole was running away and starting a new life somewhere else. She was sure that her teacher would help her to find the means so that she could support herself. The staff was on holiday, her mother was off visiting a friend, and William had business to attend to. Hours before they had all argued about her future. She professed her desire to become a composer and they had disapproved. Her mother not so much but her step dad decided that she would do nothing but marry this duke. She hadn’t stayed to hear the name of her betrothed instead she stormed out of the room slamming the door behind her. It was then she had begun to devise a plan to escape her fate and had come to the conclusion that running away was her only option.
The soft click of the door opening and closing behind her woke her from her reverie. “Who is-,” her words stopped short as she beheld her step dad standing before the door, a strange expression on his face. The door clicked once more as it was locked. The sound reverberated in her head with the fear and suspicion that gripped her. Summoning her courage she spoke up, “Get out. You have no right to be here.” He didn’t seem to hear her and looked at the pack on her bed. “Were you thinking of going somewhere my dear? You know there’s an arrangement and till then you remain in my household.”
“I..I did not agree to any such arrangement. Now if you don’t mind I need to finish here.” She expected him to argue with her and then leave. She expected anything but what happened next; she never expected him to go so far. It was her fault she should have locked her door, she shouldn’t have turned from him, she shouldn’t have baited him with words.
William had moved from the door reaching out to sink his fingers in her auburn curls, holding her in a vice like grip, that cause her head to pound and she felt as if he were ripping the hair from its roots. She squirmed against him and begged to be let go. When he wouldn’t comply she resorted to screaming for help, knowing that none would come.
His voice was thick with lust and something else. She could feel the extent of his arousal as he held her pinned to him in that grip. At five feet and six inches she was no match for a man much taller than her and of stronger build.
“It doesn’t matter that you scream or that you struggle. No one will come to your aid.” Tears sprang forth from her eyes, both from fear and anger. He shoved her unto the bed tearing at her clothes. Her hands clawed at him and her shrill screams rose to the ceiling never to be heard by others. A backhand to her face brought the taste of blood and the darkening haze that ended her struggles. Stripping the bodice away as well as her undergarments, he gazed upon her nakedness. In a drunken like stupor she tried to cover herself. “Plea..se……stop.” Tearing a strip of material from her clothes, he used it to tie her hands to the bedpost. Nicole tried to wriggle away but he covered her form with his, forcing her legs apart. “You are so beautiful,” he said bringing his lips to meet her own. She took the chance and bit him trying to draw blood. His hand rose once more to slap her and this time the world spun with the strength of it. The shock she received from the pain as he took her precious innocence caused her to black out. She awoke moments later battered and bruised, filthy with the aftermath, and hating the man her mother had married. On that day she fled with what little she could carry and the items most important to her that had belonged to her father.

“It has been almost two years Nicole? Don’t you think you should at least visit your mother?”
Nicole now twenty years of age turned from her friend and once teacher. “You don’t undertand Danielle,” said the French accented voice. “I can never go back…. that life is over.” A shudder ran the coarse of her petite frame when the memories of that long ago day threatened to flood her. “Plus I have found a job that will do me good and take me away from here.” Her friend hugged her sympathetically and expressed how much she would miss her. “Just remember what I told you,” said Samantha, “Do not cut the forest down because of one tree.” She looked down sadly, it would take a special man to open her heart and drive away the images that dwelt hidden in her heart. After tearful farewell’s, Nicole made her way to the estate of the Duke of Westminster.
Leaving her old life behind, she ventured from France to England, where she had been hired on as a musical instructor to the lady of the house and any others who wished it. She was hired not only for the instruction of music, but also for the setting up of a sort of library and entertainment suite, dedicated solely to the interests of such pursuits. Looking at the lady of the house, she had to admit she was remarkable and liked her immediately. The lady was kind enough and talked to her in excitement over her purpose. Leading her to her quarters, the lady explained that she would introduce her to everyone before dinner. For now Nicole was free to unpack and explore the estates. Thanking the gracious lady she bid her farewell and set to the task of unpacking. The room was beautiful in its simplicity and she was grateful to have been hired on. Here she could live comfortably, and if she saved her wages wisely, would be able to purchase a studio where she could provide musical instruction. Nicole thanked her lucky stars and wondered what the future held in store.
