okay so i want to start making my own music now, because im trying to get a band together..but i have a question..im just trying to get the guitar part of a song, not lyrics or drums or anything; so when you(as in the person reading this), write your own music do you just write down the tabs, or do you write down the actual notes?

well i personally write tabs, using powertabs, so i can hear it at the speed i want, and change it very easily, it also includes the notes too, but i suggest u do which ever you're more comfortable with, i personally just don't like memorizing what each note symbol is, and what not

a combination of both. I write the actual notes and as you can tell notes on guitar sometimes are repeated in music notation that are higher in pitch. so I write both but underneath I write the tab. If the whole song consists of chords I just skip it and memorize the rhythmn and record it on a program on my computer called Sonar. Its a recording program that allows multiple track recording.

I usually just make it the way i want it and then play it until I have it memorized. Once done, i'll go into Guitar Pro and then use that to harmonize it and come up with a bass part etc. The hardest thing is usually the rhythm... but only when the rhythm is really awkward to try and figure out.

Thats what I use too,Sonar. I just record it on there and if I have a doubt about being able to remember how to play it (even with the sound sample) 6 months down the road I'll tab out the the tricky part in Notepad and save it with the same name so I know where to reffer to later. But before I got sonar I just did it with a tape recorder and tabbed on paper.

Like formentioned, it's really down to the artist. Musical notation, especially in the traditional sence, is quite awkward for modern guitar pieces, as alot of techniques can't be fully described etc but it is doable and a rewarding skill to learn.

Either way I try and make it practice to do both eventually. Wether I start writing on manuscript then translate to tab or vice versa. It's good for fret board fluency and all that jazz...

not the genre, though you do have to be very fluent for the more complex peices...

To sumate this post... what ever floats it domokun domokun peace

I just write down the chords or tabs. I'm practically illiterate with notes, so that's just me...
But I've only written a few songs, so I just have most of them memorized.

And I'm so glad Blink182 is getting back together. Their last album was amazing.

I cannot read notes for guitar
Treble cleft for that matter
Bass cleft ftw
But tabs are pretty easy to understand and write
Just gotta get a rhythm going
