Mokoyi

PostPosted: Mon Jul 07, 2008 8:29 pm

Mokoyis scanned the file in front of her. The instructions were simple enough, but anyone who had spent any time in the Americas in the past six months knew nothing about the region was simple. It was difficult to pass herself off as a native and she looked a lot more like it than most people belonging to Lotus.

Today she had discarded her usual disguise- for now. It was in her bag though, just in case. And now she was waiting just outside the airplane hanger waiting for the junior recruits that had been selected for this mission. She held their file in her hand.

The German was getting antsy just staying in the residential wing. He tried to pass the time by doing routine work-outs, jogging, watching television. It was somewhat an inconvenience to travel where there were any lively sort of hang-outs, and he was becoming far too well known far too fast. His eccentric activity outside of his work required some anonymity, and so he had been stuck laying low for quite some time in the LOTUS base. This mission was a blessing.

South America. That was the most of what he knew about what he was getting into. It was some sort of investigation, for someone he didn't know but was obviously important to the cause. It was assumed that they, he and the other agents assigned, would be briefed during the flight over. So with nothing more than a bag of the necessary items and a pocket dictionary of the native tongue to look over in the wait, he approached the hanger for which he was directed to.

Mokoyis would be appraised through cool blue eyes and a cautious sort of smile. He would test the waters first, then act accordingly. God forbid he be sent back to his quarters because he winked at the woman and she turned out to be the no-nonsense type. His fine blonde hair was combed back in place, still a bit wet from the shower he had taken not long ago. He was sure he looked efficient, clean-cut, ready.

"Hello," He greeted her cordially, extending a sun-warmed hand when they were close enough. "I'm Faustus. It's a pleasure to be working with you." It would be just Faustus on the records- neither he nor LOTUS had any idea as to his background before the time marring.

Mokoyis blinked and started. She flushed slightly, ashamed of being caught day dreaming and glad her darker skin would likely hide the redness. She quickly appraised the young man approaching her. Faustus. She repeated the name in her head with a soft smile as she took his hand. He had a rather bare file, but it was no matter. It was unlikely that his past would have any bearing on where they were about to go. "I am called Mokoyis. It is good to meet you." Her voice was husky and a bit gutteral, english wasn't her first language after all.

The recruit looked capable, and that was all that she asked. He would stand out perhaps, but things like that could usually be explained away with a simple tourist story. Or maybe missionary.

The woman pushed one of her braids back over her shoulder and turned to look through the large metal door. Yep, airplane was ready. She stuffed her files her bag and motioned for the young blonde man to follow her. "We will fly. Have you ever been on an airplane?" Mokoyis loved the technology that had evolved after her time, airplanes in particular.

"YOU NOT LEAVE WITHOUT US!" a very loud voice trumpeted with the same context as the questions "Where are you going with those priceless antiques?" or "Why are you carrying that bloody knife?" With a few earth-shaking stomps, Estrelas thundered into view with the stopability of a charging cavalry.

Eponine was dragged along like a kite attached to a stampeding elephant. When she saw the two people standing in front of the big metal plane, she started and dug in her heels like a scared foal. Red alert! Red alert! Danger! Danger! One of them could be the Manager's cronies-

Estrelas, carried on by momentum, got a few steps before toppling down like a collapsing pyrimid. "Eponine, what you doing? This Maah-koyis and Faaaa-stus! You meet before! Angel! You made Angel trip over you!"

The rabbit snorted irritatedly and nudged at Eponine again. Like Estrelas, as far as Angel was concerned, movement involved her going from point A to point B and everyone else getting out of the way.

"Oh- yes, of course..." Eponine mumbled, still plotting out escape routes.

"Eponine, move!"

Eponine stayed put, face frozen in terror.

"MISTA FAAAAH-STUS YOU THERE? We need big strong man to carry Eponine! She feel faint, see!"

"Eeek!"

"I don't know," Faustus told her honestly in response to the question of airplanes. As his eyes slid along the sleek metal surface of it, something in his gut seemed to scream antique, almost convinced him that it would soon go down in flames after take off. "I guess we can say it will be my first time..."

A sudden, booming voice interrupted whatever else he might have liked to say, and the blonde man turned in time to see two familiar faces striding towards him. Er, three, counting the rabbit, who was really performing more of a hopping motion. And the poor French girl was really just being dragged. The German felt a shiver threaten to take over his body and did his best to quell it- Estrelas was a terrifying woman indeed.

A chivalrous grin was what broke across his pretty-boy features. It was a request he would be glad to accommodate.

"Estrelas! Kleine Mädchen Eponine!" He stepped toward them both, his arms outstretched somewhat in welcome. "Our first mission together! I'm glad we've already met. What's that? Are you sick, Eponine?" For people, Faustus was not an ignorant man. He could see the fear in the French woman, and wondered if it was solely for him or her surroundings entire. He did reach for her, offering his arm if what Estrelas did say was true. Really, though, he suspected it might just actually hustle her along. He wanted to get going soon!

Mokoyis was about to respond to the German but was distracted by the bousterious arrival of Estrelas and Eponine. A little smile flickered over her stern features as she thought back to her conversation with Lokari. "I wouldn't leave without either of you...any of you." She added including Angel a bit belatedly. Hopefully the rabbit wouldn't take offense. The very idea of Estrelas blending into the population of the 'New World' was vastly amusing- she wasn't even sure if the woman knew South America existed.

Eponine on the other hand looked like a deer caught in a brush fire, the panic clearly registered in her eyes. She was glad that Faustus had been able to take the girls in hand. Hopefully his easy manner would calm the flighty girls. "Lets get going then. We can brief on the plane." She didn't wait for a response, assuming the others would follow her.

Estrelas broke into a happy grin. "See? Hah! No worry! Ah know you never leave without us!" she crowed. "Come on Eponinny, we go on mission- Mistaaa Fahh-stus, you get her arm and Ah get other arm and we march her-"

Eponine whimpered loudly, her eyes taking in everyone with fright. So many people- humans! "I-i-it's fine!" she squeaked, yanking her arm out of Estrelas' ironclad grip. She flushed and ducked behind her hat brim. "Errr, um, thanks, but I'm fine," she mumbled, and waved gently. "Mokoyis, Faustus, we've met before!" she squeaked shrilly.

Estrelas grinned again and picked Angel up. "So we go in plane!" she exclaimed. "So.... Is that plane?" she asked. "It look... Heavy," Estrelas stated doubtfully. "BUT LET'S GO!"

The blonde gave a slight, but affable smile as the conflict seemed to resolve itself. Good. No more dilly-dallying, as fun as that sometimes was. He stepped toward the plane, not needing any further prompting. Somehow he knew that it would carry them no matter how true Estrelas' words rang.

"You wouldn't want it to roll over you, that's for sure," He spoke out of the side of his mouth as he followed Mokoyis. "But even a hunk of metal like this will fly if it has the right mechanism. I wouldn't worry." And with that, he boarded the plane and went to find himself a seat, almost as if he himself were a pre-programed mechanism.

Mokoyis smiled gratefully at Faustus, it appeared the boy at least knew something about the machine- she certainly didn't. Every time she boarded she sent a brief prayer to the Creator and put her trust in Wraith and his sister; she hadn't perished yet.

She found herself a seat and quickly buckled the belt- she always wondered what good it would do if there was an emergency, surely the little strip of nylon wouldn't help in a crash. Waiting for the girls to sit she shut her eyes momentaryily and murmured her few lines to Creator and Napi; the Old Man may be more helpful in this mission in second thought.

Important spiritual matters attended to she pulled out a thick file of paper and lay it on her lap. She would have to wait until they were in the air to start reading- reading while taxiing made her stomach rebel.

Eponine shakily shook out a grin. She had only been in an airplane once before, to perform in Australia. And it had been a private jet. The Manager needed to safeguard his investment from private eyes, afterall. That jet had been... Quite... Different from the machinery in front of her. Although she had always thought that airplanes had something to do with peanuts...

"Come on Estrelas," she urged gently. "Let's go in the plane. Wouldn't want to slow down the mission..."

But Estrelas continued craning her neck around and looking at the sky. "So! Where the plane?"

Eponine got the feeling that her low-tech friend was expecting a giant bird or something... "Er... Well, you have to get in the plane first."

Estrelas glanced at her suspiciously. "Then what?"

"...Then it starts flying?" Eponine gave a hopeful grin.

Estrelas continued looking at the sky. "So, we get in and then plane come from sky and pick this small room up and we fly?"

Eponine gave up. "Yes. You're real clever, Estrelas, figuring that out by yourself! Now let's go in!"

Estrelas broke into a huge grin. "Ah know. Ah know. Oh, Eponine, you hold Angel? Ah need to hold bag..."

Without waiting for a reply, a large and angry rabbit was shoved into Eponine's arms.

"Ah-Angel!"

Angel gave a snort and then thrashed- Eponine tightened her arms. "Estrelas-"

"Ah-hah! Thank you Epaninny! Now we go to small room!" Estrelas grinned and marched into the plane with one last hopeful look at the sky.

Angel struggled in Eponine's arms. The rabbit smelled something not human about her friend and she was determined to find out what was going on. "Estrelas-" She quickly ran after Estrelas.

Once inside, Estrelas plopped down on a seat and continued looking around curiously.

"Why so small?"

"Er-" Angel was slipping through her grip again- "-Er, so that it's... Lighter."

Estrelas seemed satisfied by this explanation and patted the seat next to her. "Epaninny, why you no sit down?"

"Ah- Can I put Angel down?"

"Uh?"

"Angel- Arg!"

"Oh! You put her down and she follow!" Estrelas exclaimed. "Why you carry her all way here?"

Eponine opened her mouth to speak but then giggled. "Yes, silly me, Estrelas." She happily plopped down next to Estrelas. "Is this your first time in a plane?"

Estrelas opened her mouth to reply and shouted, "YES! This my first time in small room that plane lift up!" She turned around and smiled to Faustus. "MISTA FASTAS is this YOUR first time in plane?"

"I don't think so," Eponine mumbled. "He fastened his safety belt, for one thing..."

Meanwhile, Angel snorted and dug experimentally at the floor. There was a whole new world here- strange scents, oily, monochrome ones, floated in the air. Some of them smelled rather like Eponine and metal. Angel hopped forward a few paces and tried to dig a bit more. She eyed Faustus with suspicion- she remembered him nearly toppling over onto her once- and then spotted the nice earthy lady and hopped over to Mokoyis with a snort.

Mokoyis listened to the girls with one ear as the plane began to move. Take off made her tummy feel funny, but she could normally distract herself enough to keep her dinner in her stomach. Catching sight of Angel she smiled down at the small animal, "okki Angel, how are you this morning?" She reached down and lifted the rabbit onto the seat next to her. "You don't want to fall over when we take off" She spoke in Blackfoot to Angel.

Fifteen minutes later they were leveling off and Mokoyis opened her file again. "Alright, we are going to Peru. One of LOTUS' agents has gone missing following a communication made after the last mission. South America is in chaos right now- there is a collapse of the central government and revolutionary factions are hiding out in the jungles planning armed resistance. Our agent, Maita has disappeared and we are on an intelligence gathering mission." She emphasized her words. The last thing she needed was any one to pull a hero stunt and get killed on her watch. "Any questions?"

The moment Mokoyis lifted up Angel, Eponine's eyes shot open. She opened her mouth to shout and prepared to scream- to her, watching anyone pick up Estrelas was like watching someone stick their hand in a power shredder to see what was jamming it. The large rabbit had the kick a large mule could only envy.

To her shock, Angel snorted in displeasure but settled onto the seat calmly. The white rabbit lifted her front paws and began washing her ears and face arrogantly. She looked at Mokoyis proudly, as if to demonstrate that she would do no such thing so undignified as falling over.

Eponine put her hand down and swallowed her panic. "Uh," she said.

Estrelas didn't share her friend's concern. As far as the Portuguese woman could see, Angel was a perfectly sweet little puffball who wouldn't hurt a fly or shred a German man's pants simply for being the wrong shape. She didn't share her friend's nerves at the mission either and practically bounced in her seat when Mokoyis announced the mission. "Okay okay! Yes yes question, who Maita?"

Eponine gulped "A-armed resistance?" she asked nervously. "We are gathering information for her location, right? Are we just like... Asking around?" Her CPU whirred and she imagined them facing an armed gorilla and asking, 'hello have you seen this woman? she might have been kidnapped by you and we're looking for her too, yes.' "Who are we going to ask?"

Estrelas snorted. "Bad persons of course! They probably taked her!"

Eponine nearly threw her hands in exasperation. Did Estrelas not know the meaning of dangerous mission? "I doubt it, Estrelas! I think we'll even avoid those rebels, you know?"

But Estrelas puffed her cheeks. "What if she taked by them?" she argued.
