I've tried to receive E-mail alerts, but I don't seem to be receiving them.
Apparently, you can't receive alerts when a thread is replied to, but I can't manage to get alerts for PM's either.
I know that the E-mail is working properly, because I received the welcome and activation E-mails just fine. Is there a trick to getting alerts?

Ok, the recieve alerts, first put your mouse over the "my gaia" button and then go down and click on the "account" button.
Once it brings you to the next screen, you will see a list of places on the right (ie. preferences, alerts, about me, etc.), so click on the "alerts" link.
Once there, you can choose from a variety of option on what you are alerted about.
And lastly, make sure that your checking the right e-mail, if you have multiple, or if you changed it once before.
All alerts are sent to the e-mail stated on the "preferences" page of the account window previouslt stated, just below your password verification.

^ All checked out correctly, but still no mail... This is decidedly odd.
I know that gaia has the correct address because I got the activation e-mail, and under the account section, all the alert check boxes are activated. (Except for cell phone alerts.)

Hmm, well, I got two more things for ya to try.
In the preferences section (right when you click "account" check if the second box down titled "mail" has the second setting set to no, if so, try switching it to "yes"
And the second thing is to just try changing your e-mail, and see if the newer one works.
If neither of these work, you will have to e-mail a gaia admin with the problem, because it will probably be something out of your hands if all this fails.

I agree with Entow, though I don't think the Admins will be able to help you from a PM as their inbox has been known to overfill and flood. sweatdrop I suggest one of these moderators instead. whee

I actually got a notification today... Do you have to have not logged in within the last 24 hours to get them? If so, that may be the problem; I had been on every day so far at that point, but the first time I skip a day, I get a notification.

No I don't believe so. Again, it could have been Item Normalization. Since every server was down, it probably had thousands and thousands of accounts that needed notices. Chances are the servers were backed up.
