Okay, I'm sure someone is going to probably tell me to quit being a baby or something, but this seriously annoys me because it really doesn't make sense to me.
Why do people get so technical about canon character's pasts when they are so vague?
Alright, a little while ago I posted about a WoW fic that I thought people might being interested in reading and Karnokoto answered to it. What she said kind of annoyed me and I don't mind that she was blunt about it, but anyway, she mentioned that I shouldn't come up with a canon character's illegitimate child, especially the Proudmoores. I'll acknowledge that, yeah, she's right, I probably shouldn't.
However, the information I recieved on Derek Proudmoore (who I planned on using as the main character's father) was from WoWWiki and was very vague. Okay, the only information I have on his past is that he served under his father in the navy and was burnt to a crisp by a dragon.
That's it...So....where's the problem? Yeah, it's not specified but that's exactly my point. Nobody knows if he had a girlfriend somewhere on Kul Tiras or anywhere else for that matter. It was kind of the reason I chose him in the first place.
Even still, I will acknowledge that she was right and I have decided it would be easier on me to just come up with some original characters and use them instead.
I don't just see this with WoW either; it's with just about every movie/book/game you see. It's unspecified but people get so ticked off about it.....Why?

idk, people don't really like it when you say things like 'THIS CHARACTER IS THE FIFTH REMOVED ILLEGITIMATE COUSIN OF ILLIDAN STORMRAGE'S LONG LOST SISTER'S COUSIN'S BOYFRIEND.' not saying yours is like that at all, but idk. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue

XDDD It doesn't matter anyway. I've changed her parents and stuff.
I dunno. I think it was kind of stupid in my case though because there ISN'T a lot of information on Derek Proudmoore....anyway, whatever.
>.> And yeah, my OC isn't a Mary Sue. If she was, I'd probably gut her.

I can see how that would annoy you, but I stand by what I said.
I think the reason people don't like it when, like Kim said, 'fifth removed illegitimate cousin of Illidan Stormrage's long lost sister's cousin's boyfriend' is because you're trying to make the character cool without saying anything about the character himself. Its like that kid who goes to highschool and expects everyone to like him because his third removed cousin is Brad Pitt. You just wanna smack him sometimes.
The real challenge in writing fanfiction is taking something like night elf druid #6 and turning her into this deep, likeable (or love-to-hate) character that people understand and can connect to, and then what happens is they start caring about the character and suddenly, you have a readerbase.

Her blood-line was supposed to provide for something later in the story, actually, but I can understand where you're coming from.
Anyway, I've fixed her backstory so it doesn't really matter anymore. I can still have her bust some human chick's nose for insulting her mate and her heritage without either being royal. So....umm....yeah.
By the way, Karnokoto, I kind of wanted to thank you. The blunt-ness was like taking a mace to my head (figuratively, of course) and I had an epiphany....So thanks. XD
