Super Smash Bros ADVANCED Techniques

In this thread, I will be explaining all the advanced techniques known to myself at the moment from both Melee and Brawl. This thread was made to help you all learn these techniques if desired to bump up your game.

Super Smash Bros Melee

Wavedash - One of the fundamental techniques to play at a higher skill level. This technique benefits you all the time, whether it would be used to edge hog, smash, tilt attack, or just to play some mind games.

Do you ever get tired of running, and then you have the need to turn around? Wavedashing should be your new alternative. First off, you can move backwards without having the lag to turn around and run. Wavedashing can make you slide forward or backward, so basically it is a movement glitch. While doing this, as mentioned earlier you have full control of your smash attacks, and tilts so now you can use this technique right into an attack which comes out much faster than if you were to stop with your run.

How to do it - You know how to air dodge I assume. Basically all you have to do is short hop (tap y/x lightly to make your character jump a bit) and then you air dodge diagonally to the ground. By doing this, you should notice a cloud of dust under your character. That is a sign that you are capable of doing something with it.

Note: You shouldn't see your character air dodge as you should only see the white dust/smoke under your character. To do this, all you have to do is make yourself fall faster by moving your joystick in the diagonal direction immediately after the air dodge.

After you reach this step, you are ready to learn wavedashing. Basically short hop, air dodge with a fast fall diagonally and there you have your wavedash. To know whether or not you've wavedashed is simple. Did you slide forward or backward? Every character has their own lengths of the wavedash but you should still notice the dash. Choosing direction is simple, diagonal in the direction that you want to go.

Search up videos on youtube to see what it actually looks like. Explaining techniques isn't my specialty.

L-cancel - This technique isn't required to become a good player, but most good players use this as it can be very helpful. L-cancel reduces the lag time you have after an aerial attack. It doesn't completley remove lag, but it is still useful as you can bring out your next attack much faster than if you weren't to l-cancel.

How to do it - Basically after an aerial attack, you press L immediately before you hit the ground. Works better if you short hop aerial attack. Known as Short hop fast fall l-cancel. SHFFL for an acronym.

SHDL (Short Hop Double Laser 'Fox Only') - This technique allows Fox to shoot two lasers while short hopping. This move isn't really necessary but if you're the type of player that likes to be flashy, this is a move for you.

How to do it - Basically you just need quick fingers. Smash B twice when in a short hop as fast as you can, and if you are successful you should see two lasers during those frames. I've by all means not mastered this technique, but that's because I don't really use Fox. This move takes a lot of practice and fluency with the use of Fox.

SWD (Super Wave Dash 'Samus Only') - This technique is one of the most difficult AT in Melee. This technique allows Samus to get very good movement range fairly quickly. This being very useful comes with a cost, and that is the difficulty.

How to do it - This move isn't very easy at all. During my prime time, I could only pull it off 4/10 times. All you have to do is drop your bomb (Down B) and immediately after that smash your analog back and then forward. Very difficult to explain. You have to smash your analog back and then forward IMMEDIATELY after you drop the bomb, not after it explodes. You will know if you did it right, trust me.

Super Smash Bros Brawl

Snake's Mortar Slide - This technique basically allows Snake to trigger his up-smash in consecutive with his army dive (running ->/<-). This is very useful in multi man matches as you have a good chance of hitting two people, also this move may also chain the missile with your dive so two hits right there is always nice. Though one of the main purposes for this technique is to gain some distance from your opponent, as by using this you move yourself a little farther than for you to just army dive alone.

How to do it - The easiest way in my opinion is to do your running forward immediately into a c-stick up. Trying to do everything with "A" can get difficult, so please make use of the c-stick smile You can also charge your up-smash by holding the "Z" button after you pull out that missile launcher.

Pikachu's QA Cancel - This move allows Pikachu to cancel out his Quick Attack to chain it with another move. Useful for taking down aerial enemies in a hurry in the air with Thunder.

How to do it - Basically you just use Quick Attack and then use either dair or Thunder.

Note - Dair combo only works if you use the aerial quick attack combo.
