He had been everywhere, save for Hell itself... until now, it seemed.

Death hung over this land, thick and black as ash; the earth cracked under his calloused paws as he moved along, tongue lolling. Ruy had traversed undesirable environments before, but this--- this was truly the thing of nightmares.
They might deem him crazy for attempting to cross the Azalea, but it was practicality more than anything; it was the quickest path to the Ethne Woods.

It ain't nothing, Ruy told himself grimly, clouds of dust spiraling about his large paws. Rest while the sun burns, push on in the cool of twilight-- that's how it's always been on the road.

Ears flattened against the dry wind, carrying the stench of dead wood and despair, the hefty wolf plodded on. It didn't seem to matter that he had gone for days without a solid meal, a decent drink. All that mattered was his destination-- and that was what kept him alive, gave strength to his tired spirit.

Evening arrived with a cool, relieving breeze. Eyelids heavy, Ruy raised his head to the sky. It would be dark soon. It would be time to pick up the pace.

----

He had not gone far before pausing, nose lifting abruptly. There was something strange in the air, something that did not belong amidst the heavy reek of death. It was the smell of another-- a living, breathing being.

What're the chances?..Ruy's jaws quirked in a tiny, sardonic smile. Well, if it turned out to be nothing more than a half-dead frog, he'd finally have a meal... a snack, rather.

But if it was one of his kind...

...He didn't want to consider that possibility.

There was no way that the dusty dark mound a short distance in front of the male could have been a frog, it couldn't even have been some kind of small game. Black fur greyed out with the layer of dust that had settled over it, almost completely hiding the white bone markings. Giving the appearance of some kind of strange skeletal mound.

Yet it was moving.

The she-wolf snorted dust from her muzzle where it was pressed against the ground between her front paws. Body crouched low, belly pressed flat to the ground she was intent on her work. The pale movement of her twin white tails behind her was slow and habitual, as if there were few moments when they were still. Suddenly she launched to her feet and resumed scrabbling at the hard packed earth with her forepaws, sharp nails racking at the solid earth. Yet she was determined and had already created a small crater about half a feet deep.

She paused to scent the earth again, snorting dust from her completely grey muzzle. Keeping her muzzle low she scuttled sideways around the small hole, belly brushing along the ground. Pausing, now facing more or less in the direction the male was in, she rose and dug furiously again. Dust raising from her mattered coat in little eddies from her efforts.

Stopping once more she shoved her nose in the hole again, ears pricked forwards, straining to hear, though plants made no sound. What she did catch however, was the faint sounds of movement. Dark head snapped up, icy blue eyes squinting against the sting of the dust that had found its way into them. Sneezing she growled low in her throat, irritated that she could scent nothing but dust on the wind. Since most of it was clogging her nose.

(( No prob-- I still can't get over how awesome your girl is! ))

His hopes for a bite to eat, no matter how small, were false after all. Topping a small rise, Ruy's eyes scanned the horizon, parched and charred as far as he could see. If that tiny flicker of life he had sensed was truly prey, it was long gone by now...

No matter.
Ruy's powerful chest heaved in a sigh. Time to move on, as always.

He had just turned to leave, when something caught the edges of his vision. Movement, again? The dead, still land stretched into eternity, but something broke the monotony-- something in the form of... flying dirt? Ears pricked, Ruy stalked forwards, squinting to see in the growing gloom.

A.... mole, perhaps? A lizard? Did lizards even dig holes? Whatever it was, it scrabbled frantically at the cracked ground, nearly blinding him with a storm of dust. With a low, weary growl, Ruy approached the commotion. He'd eat whatever it was, just to stop it from flinging dirt into his eyes...

His large paws stopped, mid-walk. For a moment Ruy froze, his expression that of faint surprise. The billowing clouds of dust settled, and from their midst arose a figure, dark and sleek. From the darkness, two cold eyes glinted, then came a soft growl...

Ruy's eyelids widened slightly. The wolf that crouched before him was smaller, dusty, yet its pelt shone through in the moonlight-- an eerie, skeletal glow. White markings matted with dirt covered its body, otherwise black as the desert night. There was no doubt in his mind... it was the reaper, finally come to claim him after all these years.

Ruy's muscles tensed, green eyes meeting the other's in a steady, resigned gaze.

"...I didn't think that things like you actually existed." His tone was gruff, but quiet.

((Hee thank you! Your boy is stunning as well. Love your post bty. heart ))

Pale eyes narrowed, struggling to make out the shape that was padding towards her. Damn dust had ruined her vision momentarily, just when something interesting had finally turned up on this god forsaken dirt bowl.

White tails curled behind the dusty body, their movements faster than before, flicking against the hard packed ground in a swift beat as if playing the earth like a drum, though the movements were as silent as the grave. Pale eyes, now clear of grit, roamed over the male as if judging him on some unearthly scale. Mayhaps judging his actions from his life?

Her top lip lifted at his words, revealing the very real fangs behind her markings. "Everybody says that.." She replied, her tone shockingly silken, coming from such a starkly coloured form. Raising up from her crouch she narrowed her eyes at the male, fangs once more hidden though the ghostly markings remained. A reminder to those that would anger the voodoo priestess perhaps. Shaking her head, dislodging a cloud of dust, she stepped away from the hole she had been working on and padded round the stranger, stopping to one side of him. Head lowered she rolled her pale eyes up at the taller male, white-bared ears flicking back. "Why did you come here...." She asked in that silken voice, though its very softness had sent fur ruffling with unease and tails tucking low in fear.

(( Thanks, yours was a fun read too! = D ))

He watched the skeletal wolf approach, its white tails whipping agitatedly. Ruy remained motionless, his eyes the only thing moving below heavy lids; however, the male gave a small start as this "reaper" began to speak.

A female...? Her voice was low and smooth, yet somehow, as menacing as her appearance. She circled him, ghostly eyes fixed upon his; the sensation was unsettling, as if she could steal away his soul without warning. Ruy could feel himself tense, his chest pumping in anticipation, though none of this showed in his usual, tired expression.

She had come up beside him, her bone-white designs stark in the moonlight. He stood his ground, weary gaze fixed straight ahead, as her soft, deadly voice drifted from below him.
"Why did you come here...."

He turned his head slowly, emerald eyes falling upon the other, and in them was an expression impossible to read. "....Just passing through. My destination lies within greener pastures... fortunately."

About to pose the same question to her, Ruy paused with a frown. There was no question as to why a dark, spectral reaper like her would be found in this land of the dead. The real question was...

"What's a phantom like you doing, digging holes in the middle of nowhere?" Ruy jerked his head towards the dusty pit, eyebrows raised faintly. Shouldn't she be engaged in more... well, ghastly activities, like collecting the spirits of unfortunate, lost travelers? Such as... himself?
PostPosted: Sun Jul 06, 2008 9:25 am

His words caused the same two-toned ear to flicker once more, her head shifting from side to side slowly almost in a manner akin to a hunting snake. Though the female's body remained still, only those incessantly moving tails remained unaffected by the conversation, such as it was. Preventing the illusion that she might simply vanish into the dusty winds from completely enclosing her.

No one 'just passed through' the hellish landscape that surrounded them. There was something about the male... something different from the regular wolves that had the misfortune to encounter her. The slow hypnotising sway of her head stilled as she lifted it, muzzle raised as she peered at him with narrowed eyes. The circular marking on her forehead seeming to suddenly glow in the moonlight, almost like an omen.

There... She sensed it again. An aura that drifted round the male like a long stale scent. A ghost of some experience or memory. Or maybe simply the weight of one mortal life span. Either way it intrigued her. He seemed.. resigned? Mayhaps, but that left her with a rather delicious dilemma. Should she leave him to wander along his road towards what ever the fates had in store for him. Or could she borrow what was left of his existence? She hated leaving anything to waste and this interesting male would be wasted... of that she was sure.

Her upper lip drew back, baring razor sharp fangs in an expression close to a smirk. Pale eyes roaming the area around them as if watching things only she could see before returning that eerily luminescent gaze back to the male. "Even one such as I can not escape certain.. necessary activities." She replied in that fur-ruffling voice, like ghostly fingers drifting through a wolf's pelt. Ever so soft but far from innocent.

Dark head tilted as she studied him from the corner of one eye, as if she was seeing not the male's earthly body, but something else. Something that interested her... possibly something that would not lead to a healthy future for the large stranger.

She watched what only she could see, and smiled slowly.

His eyes narrowed slightly, his body a still, silent mass in the darkness. The black she-wolf's head had begun to sway rhythmically, as did her ghostlike tails; Ruy thought he could feel a sudden chill about him, the dust stirring from the ground beneath their paws. He glanced up sharply, just in time to catch the slow, white glow that radiated from her forehead... and then, those haunted eyes fixed onto his.

For the first time since their encounter, Ruy moved-- he took one step backwards. His brow furrowed, jaws tightening in a silent, troubled growl. Something in her gaze pierced straight through him, delved into him, as if searching his very core. She was smirking, fangs gleaming, as if she had found something particularly interesting... or particularly horrible. All the things he had locked away deep within his mind, his heart-- things long past, never to see the light of day... he could feel their rusty doors creak open beneath her gaze.

Was this how it felt... to be judged? What did this reaper see; what was she looking for? Never in all of his experiences, his travels, had Ruy come across an unearthly being like this. Never had he felt so stripped raw, so spiritually exposed... and he hated it...

It came as a relief when the she-wolf finally looked away, her pale eyes surveying the area. The pressure lifted; Ruy exhaled heavily, his chest heaving in rapid, shallow pants. Sweat rolled down his body, his muscles taut, yet the wolf continued to stare straight ahead, jaws set in a grim line. Calm down. Calm down, Ruy. Ain't gonna get you nowhere to lose your cool, 'specially against a demon like this. Just take it slow, and easy.

"Was... was that part of your 'necessary activities' as well?" His voice came low, husky, beneath his quiet panting. Forcing down all misgivings, his expression cold, Ruy continued grimly, "...So what horrors did you see? Will my body rot in this damned wasteland?

"...Or is there an end to this road, after all?"
PostPosted: Tue Jul 08, 2008 5:00 am

His reaction to her was nothing like what she had come to expect in these chance encounters. She could scent his unease, nay, near fear at times. And yet still he stood, waiting before her as if for some final judgment.

Not far from it.. she mused to herself, pale eyes resting on the big male, simply watching him, actually looking at him and not through him as was her habit. The tightness in his body sang sweetly to her, the scent that rose stronger from him made her want to rub against him, to wrap herself in that wondrous flavour. She let a shiver roll through her body, eyes closing briefly, claws digging into the hard packed earth under them.

It was a rare thing for another of her kind to catch her attention, but this one had. Whether or not that was healthy for the male, who knew. But she enjoyed the way he stood, fearful and yet resigned with a strength behind him that spoke of harsh years and a weary existence.

Turning her head fully back to him, pale gaze lifting from its exploration to study the male's expression.

" ....Or is there an end to this road, after all?"

She let a dark smile curl her lips, pale eyes glinting with amusement, perhaps at some hidden knowledge.

"There is always an end to the road." She purred, her voice like the moonlight, soft yet chilling. "But yours does not end in this place, wolf." No... she would see to that. This one was too interesting, too amusing, to let him die so soon after he had found her. Her smile widened into a smirk as she lowered her head again, fur ruffling in the wind the motion of the white markings giving her the appearance of movement. As if she might simply dissolve into the air itself.

Perhaps she could borrow him... she doubted Fate would mind very much.

He wasn't quite sure whether to feel relief at her words-- or further unease. So, Ruy settled for a bit of both.

His tense shoulders lowered; his breathing slowed, and quieted. Yet Ruy did not take his eyes off of the female, who looked as if she were thoroughly enjoying herself... at his expense. Her sleek body seemed to meld into the night as she smiled, those accursedly knowing eyes narrowed in mirth. He felt like a mouse, running around within a lion's cupped paws; this dark she-wolf was toying with him, and there was nothing he could do about it.

If it had been just another wolf, Ruy would have taken him down and left it at that. But this.... this was something far beyond what he could understand. This was dealing with matters-- strange, twisted matters-- of life and death. He would not... no, he could not... touch this ghostly female.

It was a strange feeling, being at someone's complete mercy. But this far down the line, Ruy had come to expect anything..... and to even play along, occasionally.

He took a heavy step forward, his head swiveling to meet her gaze. She was smiling again in that unsettling way, her white designs gently gleaming in the moonlight-- if he wasn't dealing with death itself, he would have thought it almost lovely.

"So, reaper...... what is it I need t'exchange for my passage?" Ruy tilted his head slowly, green eyes emotionless. "Isn't that how they play it in your realm, anyhow? You give some, you take some..."

His slack-lidded gaze lifted, focusing somewhere beyond her, into the dark, vast nothingness. "'Sides, it don't seem you plan on letting me go that easy..."
PostPosted: Wed Jul 09, 2008 4:35 am

Her ears swept forwards as the male stepped towards her, wandering pale eyes slowly making their way back to him. Reaper... the name made her purr softly in the back of her throat. Was that what he thought she was? Though she guessed it was as good as any of the other names she had been given over time. And, when it came to others of her species... not that far from the truth.

Pale tails twisted behind her as she studied him, head turned to one side slightly. "A little of your time, the use of your body. A small section of your life. Is that too much to ask for? I fair trade, I would suggest, for the rest of it."

Turning away from him, seeming to know that he posed no threat to her, she padded silently to circle round the hole she had been working on when he found her. Her movements, at odds with her patterning, were smooth and graceful, almost as if she was treading not on the hard packed earth, but glided just above it. The illusion woven perhaps by the skeletal markings on her paws, the white gleaming softly in the silver moon light, while her dark fur blended into the shadows cast all around them.

Pausing on the far side of the shallow hole she stepped round to face him. Head held up, sleek body relaxed, graceful even in that perfect stillness. The soft light reflected in her eyes, dark shadows of the clouds above chasing themselves across her gaze like the long lost souls of the damned.

His eyes fell upon the small, dusty pit in the cracked earth. Gradually, they rose to rest upon the she-wolf, who stood silently above it. The atmosphere had changed, though he couldn't quite put his paw on why or how. All he knew was that the air around them had grown heavy, suffocating, and that the reaper's expression had become serious, shadows flickering within her cold eyes.

Borrow... my body? Take a part of my life?..Common sense gripped his mind like an iron vice, howling, This is -crazy-! You can't trust that... -demon-... as far as you can leap to the moon--

Glancing sharply at the female, Ruy opened his jaws to speak... then paused.

....What good would it do to follow his sensible instincts, when this whole meeting was anything but sensible? For all he knew, he could be stumbling around in a dream-- a waking nightmare. The lines between reality and illusion had become blurred, deep within this dead, hellish land; the very presence of this reaper confirmed that fact. And who knew what could happen to him if he refused her request?

Besides, wasn't he already tired-- so very tired, after all these years-- of his very existence? What difference, then, would a slice of his life make...?

She was watching him closely, the edges of her silhouette wavering in the darkness. Ruy heaved a deep, slow sigh, gaze falling once more upon the small crater.

Further and further down the rabbit hole...

"...So what is it I need to do?" The male padded forwards, his voice soft, weary.
PostPosted: Thu Jul 10, 2008 1:37 am

She watched him, this way his powerful muscles tensed at her words, the slight squint of his eyes as his mind told him things she couldn't read, but could guess at. Loosing control of ones existence, even for a short time and good reason, was a bitter pill to swallow. No matter that it was for something beyond what most wolves would understand.

She remained still, waiting, her pale gaze watching the male opposite her with an infinite calm. As if time had no meaning to her. The wind ruffled through her fur, the soft moonlight slid over the two wolves, out in the vastness of the badlands. Alone in a place few dare enter let alone cross as he had, and who knew how often the she-wolf visited.

Not a single flicker of the male's body escaped her attention, pale eyes passive, completely unworried. Everything was up to him, so it seemed, yet all could have been simply an illusion. A test perhaps.

His words, coming at long last into the shadowed night, drew her lips into a wide smile. As if had just picked the right road to walk. Motioning with her forepaw, she indicated the hole in front of her. "There is a root, it is required for my work but it only grows out here, under the first layer of the earth. I desire to borrow your strength, for you have very much of it."

Hmph. What a way to spend his last moments, before having part of his life sucked away forever. Well, Ruy had no objections to manual labor, strange as this request might be...

Glancing briefly at the female, Ruy trotted up to the hole, and lowered his nose to the ground. Fighting back sneezes from the thick dust, the male shook out his body, then with a powerful swipe of his paws began to dig.
The moment his claws hit the ground, he knew this was going to be no cakewalk. The earth was hard as rock and broke-- no, shattered-- only with brute force. Ruy soon found that just clawing away had no impact on the hole whatsoever; he had to thrust his whole body into the effort...

It's a wonder she even managed to make a chip in the ground, Ruy thought grimly as he toiled, thinking of the reaper's slender stature. Dirt flew around his large paws, sending dust clouds into the night air; tongue lolling, his chest heaving from the efforts, Ruy watched as the hole grew deeper, bit by bit.

"What..." the male panted as he dug, his coat matted thickly with dust, "....What exactly am I looking for...?"

(( Sorry it took this long for such a short post-- I had company over and was distracted most the time! >_< I'm going to be gone tomorrow, but I'll try to check up late at night when I get back! ))
PostPosted: Fri Jul 11, 2008 5:03 am

((Its fine!!! XD Its a great post too. *hugs* Man I love Ruy, he is such a dude. heart ))

The pure effort that the male had to expand in order to deepen the hole made one wonder just how long the bone-marked female had been out here, digging, in order to have created the shallow bowl in the earth.

Despite the dust that swirled around them, the she-wolf stayed in her place, standing part way round the hole from where the male worked. Dust billowed around them from his efforts, far thicker and copious than when she had been working. But the hole was growing swiftly now and despite the dust that swirled around them like a mini whirlwind, the female was smiling.

Grey coated her body, dulling out the stark black and white of her fur for once again, turning her ghostly in the moonlight. The darkness of her fur under the dust seemed as if it were part of the night, leaving the skeletal markings floating in the shadows, partly hidden under the faint glowing cover of dust, like a ghost's ephemeral body. Yet the irregular sneezes that escaped her proved that she was still among the living.

At his words she stepped forwards, slipping along side him into the hole, her slender muzzle tracing along the freshly exposed earth. Her body was warm despite the chill of the night, muscles sleek under her thick pelt. White-edged ears flicked as she concentrated on something at the bottom of the hole. Nudging his muzzle slightly to one side with her own she then drew her head back, pale gaze flicking to his, so close now that it was possible to make out the several shadows of blue in her gaze.

"There.. just a little bit more. It is a thick root of the Buraghgarar plant." She held his gaze momentarily before stepping away, slim body slinking back up out of the hole then turning, standing close to him as if not caring that the dust he kicked up was coating her body and clinging to her nose. She certainly wasn't a female that was afraid of getting dirty.

Ruy felt the oddest urge to chuckle, hearing the female's sneezes from outside the dust cloud-- did reapers even sneeze? But not being quite the type to show amusement, Ruy kept it to himself, and continued plowing on. If he opened his jaws anyway, he'd snort a whole lungful of dirt... and maybe even that accursed root, too.

Speaking of the root...

The she-wolf had come up beside him, silent and quick as a shadow-- a dusty shadow. But she didn't seem to mind; her sharp eyes scanned the loose earth by his paws, before lighting up. Then came a soft nudge, entirely unexpected. Cold yet electrifying, it sent a chill through Ruy's frame... as if he had been touched by death's own muzzle. When the male regained himself, he was suddenly staring at something thick and smooth, half-embedded in the dirt. Vaguely he heard her words, felt her cool gaze upon him.

She had moved nimbly out of the hole and was now looking down from the edge, blue eyes intent. Shaking his head to clear his muddled thoughts, Ruy growled quietly, focusing on the half-exposed root. There was no time to mull over things now! He had to get going, as soon as possible. Even if it meant giving in to the she-wolf's requests...

With a final grunt of effort, Ruy clawed the earth from around the root, dislodging it from its prison. It tumbled to his paws, squat and unimpressive; Ruy looked down at it, frowning dubiously. So, this... -thing-... is what's gonna sap years off of my life? ...Well, orders were orders. Picking it up gingerly in his mouth-- and immediately regretting it, for it tasted agonizingly bitter-- Ruy leapt out of the hole. Facing the female, he dropped it gently by her paws and stepped back, panting and sweat-soaked from the labor.

"Is... is this gonna hurt much...? I'm already half dead from just recoverin' the thing... wouldn't be a surprise if this life-borrowing kills me outright."

The corners of his jaws quirked faintly, in a tired smile. The dark she-wolf looked just as dusty and dirt-coated as he.

(( XD Sorry it's so long this time LOL! When I'm tired I start rambling, yargh. And I love Quetzal too, she's ttlly smexy. 8 DDD *gets glared at by her* ))
