I imagine things like this have happened to almost every parent at one time or another - you're at the store, turn, and your kids NOT where you thought they were. Generally, you just have to look for a minute and you find them.

Here's my scariest story:
The incident I had was visiting my sister - after being in the car ALL DAY with the kids, we got to her house and were sitting visiting - when I realized my youngest (then age 1) had wandered off and I didn't see her. We all got up and started calling for her - she wasn't with her older brothers, so both them and my sister's boys started looking also. That means we had 7 people looking through a three-bedroom house - and NOBODY SAW HER!
I went outside, thinking somehow she'd gotten a door open - something she'd never done before. I was starting to panic! I was just starting into the neighbors' yard when my nephew yelled out that he'd found her!
SHE WAS ON A PILE OF LAUNDRY - FAST ASLEEP!
We'd all walked right past her, and as she's pulled some clothes over herself like blankets she was practically invisible!

Wow, my best friend has a daughter who likes to sleep in cozy nooks, preferably under wadded-up blankets - so it's easy to miss her! The other two kids have gotten very good at playing "Let's Hunt for Chloe"...
My incident was actually pretty short-lived. I was visiting my sister in North Carolina and following my toddler daughter around as she wandered around their two big trucks. Well, I saw her run behind one of the trucks, rounded the corner after her - and she wasn't there. I called her twice - no answer, not even a mischievous giggle. I circled around both trucks a few times, thinking maybe I missed her. I called louder and louder as time passed. How fast can she go? Could she have made it to the treeline? Oh my god, they own 10 acres, most of it forested, and there are cougar sightings all the time! I eventually got two of my nephews to stop arguing long enough to tell me they hadn't seen her either (not too thrilled at their total lack of empathy and manners - they'd been ignoring me calling my daughter louder and louder for the last two minutes solid, shot me dirty looks for interrupting their fight, and went someplace else to continue - but one thing at a time). Just as I started to seriously hyperventilate and wonder how far she could get before I could find help (of *course* I was the only adult supervising outside play at the time), her angelic little fuzzy head peeked out from behind the other truck. I couldn't decide whether to be angry or overjoyed, so I settled for both at once: *kisshugsnuggle* "Yeesh, girl, put in an appearance when I'm calling you! Couldn't you hear me?!" *kisshugsnuggle*
Let's call it a random coincidence that I found a few new gray hairs that week...

I blame all my prematurely gray hairs (numerous) on my 4 children!
(the fact that my grandmother's hair was stark white by the age of 45 has NOTHING to do with it!)

we went to the county fair a couple of years ago with my sister-in-laws familly. she has 2 children my son's age,4 and 5. my son was 5 at the time. we were making our was threw the very busy game area so i grabbed my nephews hand and assumed that mary would grab my son's hand. after we made it threw the crowed i looked for my son and couldn't find him. i started to freak outand looking everywhere for him. after looking around for a bit my brother-in-law found him with a security person. they gave me a call to confirm that he was mine and i met him at there office. i never let go of him or trusted anyone else to grab his hand in a crowed again.

At least he knew who to go to! My husband's a police officer, and we went to the circus a few years back, we noticed a lost child, watched him for a minute to see if he belonged to someone near, then hubby went and showed him the badge in his wallet...........he looked so relieved - it's one day my husband was really glad to be a policemen (makes up for some of the other people he has to deal with!) Of course the parents weren't too far behind, we just had to wait with the kid until the crowd cleared up a bit, and there they were.
