How do oyu deal with insect and rodent infestations?
  Squish them!
  Bomb them!
  Call the Orkin man!
I use some natural remedy or repellant!
I leave them alone because I am unsure what to do.
I leave them alone because they are alive and just trying to survive.

We all know Buddha said killing was wrong and was bad karma, and I believe it's why monks are vegetarians. However, I was wondering, what do you think is the "Buddhist" thing to do with you have an ant or roach infestation? What do you do? Do you bomb them? Do you squish them on sight or do you just hire an exterminator to get rid of the problem once and for all?

Well, when we have ants, a few of them here and there don't bother us, but when there are more than a few we put out a natural "bug-be-gone." You know, lemon, lime, vinegar, soap. Things that don't hurt the environment and don't hurt the ants. 3nodding

That's a darn fine plan there. I'm dealing with ants right now (we get them every summer), and haven't really bothered to actually do anything to get rid of them - I kind of like watching them crawl on my ceilings, to be honest. It's quite nifty. biggrin

What kind of mixture of stuff are you using? And how/where should it be applied/set out? I'd like to know more so that maybe I could get some peace from these little guys without killing them. 3nodding

I use the natural remedy. I catch the bug and put it outside among plants or somwhere else where it'll be safe. If it's a bug I don't like, I leave it alone. If it's a bee, hornet, or wasp, I run away screaming. gonk

I *try* to have compassion for the bugs though. Even the ones I don't like/am scared of.

I deal with roaches in a different way than what might be considered "normal". I've made a deal with one roach that I found in my bathroom. I spoke outloud to it, and said "I don't like you, and you don't like dying. As long as I don't have to see you, you can live." Ever since, I've never seen a roach in my house.

It's unfortunate to kill them, but I'm terrified of roaches. If there's a bug in my house I get my boyfriend to try to kill it. I just say a prayer ("little bug, little bug, speed yourself to buddhahood.") and ask forgiveness from Vajrasattva before I go to bed. If I don't kill vermin in my house I lose food and the money I bought it with. I do have compassion for vermin, but I'd rather take the small bad karma point than waste money and food. To me wasted food is a more egrigious circumstance than killing a bug.

I suppose I should update my own situation, as summer is back and brought the ants with.

The ants and I have a deal now. So long as they're not in the food I'm eating, they can stay until summer is up (they always leave when fall arrives), and I'll even leave them some tasty crumbs. So far, no bites or ants in bad places, so the deal seems to be working even if I can't speak ant. 3nodding

Heh, maybe you were an ant in a past life, maybe? Dunno, I suppose it doesn't matter too much now. I can say I've killed many insects, but I did something that really surprised me about a couple of weeks ago. I was taking a shower, and I saw a Grandaddy Long-Legs spider climbing down the back wall of the shower. I looked up in the corner and even saw his web. I looked at the spider ( I'm terrified of insects, in all forms!) and said " I'm not gonna squash you, since your fangs can't pierce my skin. I don't want to hurt you, but I need to move around a little and this waters gonna wash you down. You should climb back up and go away for a bit until I'm done or something..." I personally cna't recall if I actually said it, or only thought it, but either way, it started to climb back up, and crawl through a crack in the ceiling!

It all depends. In my personal experience, I try to kill absolutely nothing. However, I did kill a spider last night because it could (and probably would) bite me in my sleep. But having some shamanistic beliefs, I asked the spirits to release it's soul from the body, and then squished him with my shoe. But if it wasn't so close to my bed, I would've left it alone. If my grandma wasn't asleep in the next room, I would've captured him and set him free outside. I try to maintain a high level of peace with nature and the spirit world so as not to bring about any bad karma or anger any spirits.

I like the "deal" thing your talking about. I don't kill the bugs, my family does but I don't tell them to kill the insects/bugs/arachnids. I'll do the whole "make a deal" thing your talking about.

Let me know if it works for you too. It worked for me, but I don't know how well it'd work in other places. Or if it was the deal at all. It might have been the fact that every time I actually was eating something, it moved and shook a lot, which let them know it wasn't a good place to be. xd

I helped a ladybug out of the shower a few days ago, and I'm trying to make sure I just put the bugs elsewhere. I talked to the ladybug and told it to be safe and it wouldn't die. it crawled up the wall, and I never saw it again. 3nodding

卍 The quieter you become, the more you can hear.

My apartment has several house centipedes living in it. They're rather ugly creatures, but I let them live. They eat the bugs I actually have to worry about (like the darkling beetles I see every now and then; they can cause property damage. Certain spiders too.), and they're harmless to humans. I read somewhere that some Japanese people like to keep them as pets. *shudder*

May you attain enlightenment. 卍

I don't kill anything I can avoid not killing. I have never had a problem with ants or anything, but if I did it would be repellents all the way. I hate the chemicals in bug spray and am kind of opposed to death. If I step on things by accident I try not to sweat it too much though,
