He'd been 'back' for a few days and was slowly getting settled back into things. There wasn't much that had changed but he was starting to see things a bit differently and react a bit differently. He figured he'd need a bit more time to adjust despite the scientists telling him that he'd be fine, really.
Rufus had told him everything had been taken care of on his end so he figured he shouldn't have too much to worry about. At least that would mean that his friends would have been told something about where he'd gone even if they didn't get the whole story.

Where the past couple days had been settling for Riley, Kaleb had just had his tilting world turned upside down. He knew his partner had been in the labs for his routine medical thing, and had worried himself sick that it was taking so long, but he had gotten through it knowing that Riley wouldn't be happy to see him neglecting to take care of himself. He was still scrawnier than he had been, and tired and thin looking, but he had finally started to seem a bit healthier after shifting his focus away from working himself half to death. Then he had gotten the memo from Rufus.
It hadn't taken too long for the distraught little mage to figure out what to do, and it was a simple matter for him to open up a portal that would take him right to Riley's side, wherever he was. Be it a meeting, or a job, or whatever, it would have to wait until he was done.
The contents of Rufus' letter made his heart ache as he caught sight of his closest friend the instant he stepped out of the portal. "Riley!"

He'd mostly been wandering around doing nothing in the hallways between getting stopped by co-workers to tell him they were glad to see him. When he heard his name, practicaly right next to his ear, in a familiar voice he almost jumped out of his skin.
"Holy ******** .... Jesus." He took a deep breath and looked over toward the sound of his old partners voice. "Do you have to scare me like that? Could at least give me a bit of warning." He grinned slightly.
Rufus must have said something to Kaleb for him to have shown up like that

That smile managed to stop the mage's emotional rampage in it's tracks. Where he had been meaning to give Riley a good smack for worrying him, and then shove the letter at the redhead and demand an explanation with all the fury and force of his emotional distress, instead he just kinda stared for a second in a complete loss for words. Any thought of being angry just wasn't possible after seeing Riley again after so long.
"I-I did warn you, I called you before I hit you," he finally muttered, now awkwardly fidgeting and staring down at the letter in his hands. He had come to find out if that letter was true, and if Riley really didn't want a little nuisance like him underfoot, but now he couldn't even meet his friend's eyes just in case it was true.

"You did?" He felt around for his phone .... which was on his desk. "... kinda hard to get a call when ya don't have your phone on you." He laughed. "Oops"
At least Kaleb hadn't yelled at him yet. "I guess ... Rufus said something to you? The way you were runnin i mean ..."

"Not on your phone, just now when I stepped through the portal." Kaleb said with a bit of a huff. The irritation sparked his anger again and he finally went through with his first plan, smacking Riley remarkably hard on the arm. "Why didn't you tell me you were okay?" He demanded, with a raised voice that somehow managed to fall short of a yell. "I was worried sick about you, being gone in the labs all that time with who knows what being done to you, and then I get this letter saying you've requested a break in our partnership and you don't want to even be around me anymore!"

"Well that wasn't much of a warning." He grinned. "I mean since that's what made me jump an'all." He should have been used to that though. He must have gotten used to that not happening while he was in the Labs.
"I, sorta couldn't. I mean ... i wasn't allowed to talk to anyone so i couldn't really tell anyone anything. I figured Rufus would tell everyone." He paused a moment. "I, didn't say i didn't want to be around you anymore. I just said that .... well that i didn't think if it would be good to be your partner anymore and that i can't really, live with you."
He bit his lip, looking horribly nervous. "i'm sorry..."

Most of the letter was true then.
"I don't understand," Kaleb muttered, unable to look up. Why hadn't Riley told him, instead of letting him receive a cold and impersonal note from Rufus? And could Kaleb really believe that Riley still wanted to spend any time together? All he had to go on was that stupid letter, Riley's confirmation, and one little denial that hardly held up against all the rest. The little mage's hands trembled, the hallway was no place for a conversation like this, but he couldn't bring himself to just escape through a portal and hide from his emotions until he was sure he understood what was going on.
