Good or bad I've heard that luck comes in 3's.
For example: last week I had infected glands, and over the weekend I had one of my clients bugger off with out telling me where he went, and then at 5 am part of the plaster on my bedroom ceiling fell on my bed while hubby, dog and myself were sleeping. Once again Bear and hubby got the worst of it.

So anyway, what are your feelings on luck, or any other superstitions that you have?

Well... my superstitions... I tend to go against the classic American superstitions. Such as walking underneath a ladder, a black cat crossing your path, and the 'unlucky' number thirteen.
Did you know that in Japanese superstition, when a black cat crosses your path it's supposed to bring good luck? I tend to follow that path.
And the number thirteen. Where did that come from, anyway? I find thirteen a very lucky number. I love Friday the thirteenth. It always seems to be my best day.
And ladders? They're just dangerous... walking under one won't effect you much.

To me, superstition is an unrational expectation of coincidences. I try to keep my mind open to the possibility that throwing salt over your shoulder dispells bad luck, but salt? These are mainly old wives' tales. I feel there is no truth to most superstitions. I said most.

Back on the black cat thing. I have a friend who has three black cats. She seems to have the best luck in the world!
Cats are supposed to bring good luck, not bad.

Thanks again for reading one of my random rants. biggrin

The ladder thing is understandable as something can fall, or you might startle the person on the ladder. But a ladder leaning on a wall forms a triangle and it was once believed that triangles represented the holy trinity and violating a triangle meant you were in league with the devil

Umbrellas, simple logic you open it up inside and you will probably knock something over.

unlucky 13 came from various historical, mythological events, where 13 was involved and some tragic mishap occured and the numbers add up to 4 which is also supposed to be unlucky

There are two ways you could look at my track record in regards to luck.
Some people see the horrible things and claim I'm unlucky.
I tend to think I'm a lucky person. Yes, bad things have happened, but I'm still sane, when some people would have broken. I'm still alive when some of the situations where potentially life threatening.
Every time in my life when I've had no other option but to depend on luck, she's pulled through for me. That's not saying I depend on Lady Luck, just sometimes things are completely out of your control.

As for good/bad luck coming in threes? I think it depends on the person. With all superstitions if you believe it you will see it.

We are creatures of pattern. We look for it (mostly subconsciously). Think of the movie 23 with Jim Carey. Perfect example of someone trying to see the number 23 in everything. He went as far as to say the color RED equaled 23. Its interesting how one can do such things and its also interesting to note the intelligence of numbers. However, some, when it involves just everyday math, can't do a thing.

Luck, depending on your view, can be horribly skewed. A friend of mine states multiple times: "Mother Nature must know that the rain makes my happier, because every time I'm upset, it rains." One of the occasions that he said that to me, it had rained on a previous day when he stated before hand that he was happy. I reminded him of the occasion and he said: "oh...well...it wasn't a hard rain...like really hard."

Luck always comes in threes. Good or bad. What about that fourth time? What about the large time gap between luck 2 and luck 3? Our sense of time alone is very skewed as well. "Oh! Today was the longest day ever!" "Oh! Today was the fastest day ever!" Time doesn't change length. It is constant. Our days always have an equal amount of 24 hours in them. They seem shorter or longer, but they really aren't.

Simply put, we are creatures of pattern. We seek out patterns so that we can try to explain them. David G. Myers puts it perfectly in a chapter of his book Intuition: Its Powers and Perils.

Pattern is something "Constant" and constancy gives comfort. It's natural a person would search for comfort.
Sorry. Don't know where that came from. Possibly too much study on patterns lately. @.@

It is a great book, Thyna, but not exactly what you think. Its a scientific/psychological book. He more or less puts down the idea of psychic intuition and what not. However, it is very accurate and he does have evidence of his positions. He does say, however, that is some cases, our gut instinct *is* much better than our reasoned options. Id o recommend this book to anyone interested in intuition and science.

I need to memorize that title. You've mentioned it before. I want to try finding it at my local library.

If you can't find it by what I put, try finding it by "The powers and perils of intuition"...I don't know why, but Barnes and Nobles (or was it Borders...)had it in their system like that. Its a green cover with a y-shaped path on the front.

Actually it is what I was thinking. Usually something with Perils written in the title often depic trappings and misgivings about the subject.

But it would be interesting if Science can explain random events where you place your name in a draw, and someone comes up to you and says "You are going to win" and sure enough your ticket is drawn.

Or recently I went in a corner store to pick up some munchies and had this feeling that I couldn't loose if I bought a scratch ticket (I very rarely buy tickets btw), I figured the worst thing that would happen is I'm out $3. I ended up winning $25 which covered the cost of the ticket and the munchies.

I don't deny that there are situations where ones knowledge and awareness play a huge roll in how our intuition works, and even then it isn't a perfect system. but I also know that isn't all that is involved. And no disrespect to science and psychological studies, but they can't prove everything.

No offense taken. There definitely is a fine line between the two subjects. Honestly, psychology can't even prove everything they want to prove, but we are still trying are hardest. A lot of the time we chalk it up to internal things anyway. blaugh Psychology is so much fun!

Psychology: Study of human behaviour
Body language and verbal cues, and thoughts

However, when working with some of my clients, body language, verbal cues and thinking processes don't always match and it requires intuition and guess work to say just the right thing to avoid client physical outbursts.

I have noticed bad luck comes in threes. Although bad or good luck I have seen in equal shares it seems like. I wish we didn't have bad luck, because it all seems to happen at the wrong time, but that is how we learn to cope with things.

someone once told me that if we didn't experience the bad from time to time we would never know what good actually felt like
