Shinoma tugged on the rabbit carcass, pulling a leg bone from the rest of it, letting the rest of it skitter across the ground with the force she had to exert from seperating the leg bone from the body.

She propped it across her front legs where she was lain on the floor, gnawing on the old meat that was still on the bone, her little pointed teeth making scraping noises as she did so. Shinoma paused, looking across the Lake from her position on the bank. She'd come this way because her mother had shown her the Village, caught a rabbit for her and left her daughter to go hunt bigger game.

Now she was thinking about going back home, her belly was full, and there didn't seem to anyone interesting around for her to terrorise. She huffed, fanning herself with her smoky winglets, stretched and stood. She looked around again, giving the immediate area one last scan before she would give up and clip off home to Izusa.

His head held high, Cobalt walked around the Lake. Inside, though, he was full of questions. Feeling like he couldn't match up to his Kalona blood, he questioned whether he was even worthy of it. Perhaps he should hide away from the world, where no one could look down upon him. No, that wouldn't be right. He shook his head, attempting to clear it. So many questions, most of them unanswered. He scowled. Even these questions proved that he was unworthy of his Kalona heritage.

As he made his way around the Lake, he noticed a small filly. But...she didn't look like any of the foals he had seen before. All covered in wisps of shadowy smoke, complete with Kalona features to boot. Suddenly, he was gripped by a desire to run. Surely this filly would be just like the others...just like the ones who taunted him for his obvious shortcomings. He stood there, unable to move, torn between his desire to be among another Soquili, and his fear of being rejected yet again.

'What the heck?' Shinoma blinked, stepping forwards deliberately as the large and dark shape came into view. It looked almost as though a piece of shadow had gotten up and walked away, and as she moved even closer, it resolved itself into a very striking looking stallion.

His aspect was dark, his wings alot like her own and her mother's and she flicked her winglets as she thought this. His tail wasn't properly Kalona-like, but he was sufficiently wicked looking for her not to dismiss him as being not worth her time..

'Hey.' she called, as she clipped swiftly up to him, her crimson eyes still scanning his whole body as she did so.
'Who are you?'

Cobalt stiffened as he was sized up by the filly. "I am called Cobalt." he said, his shadowy blue eyes taking in her small form. She was small, that was true, but there was much fire in her. He could tell that she was going to grow up to be very formidable, if she wasn't already.

"Who are you?" Returning her question was, of course, the natural thing to do. His flicked his tail, a nervous habit, and silky strands caressed his flank for a moment. Although it wasn't a proper Kalona tail, Cobalt rather liked it. It was far softer than the usual barb. He noticed that the filly had a rather unusual tail as well. Perhaps he would ask her about it later, once they were properly introduced.

Shinoma made an 'oohing' sound at his name, repeating it, rolling it around her mouth. His name even sounded dark and dangerous, and she flicked her tail tendrils in excitement at having found another who might one day be a powerful ally..

'I am Shinoma, daughter of Izusa and Taraxippus..' she grinned, showing her pointed teeth as she did so. She tapped one with her tongue tip absently, before looking back up at the stallion.

'You Kalona huh?' she said, her eyes fixing on his bat-like wings.

"We are well met, Shinoma. And, yes, I am Kalona...partially. If you are expecting me to behave as such, however, I fear you will be disappointed." The filly was obviously quite proud of her heritage, as she relished in revealing her fangs, showing off slightly. Perfectly fine for her, of course, but there was a reason Cobalt refrained from yawning and displaying his teeth. He felt ashamed of his fangs, as if he didn't deserve them.

"Are you out here alone?" he asked, his eyes narrowing slightly. It wasn't exactly safe for a young one to wander alone, not even for a child of the Kalonas.

All her wild imaginings of recruiting him into her herd when she was older were dashed with his words. Her own small eyes narrowed, she bristled at the older Soquili, heedless of any potential danger.

'Why? You should be proud of being even the smallest bit Kalona!' Shinoma hissed, her tail lashing in annoyance, but she managed to calm a little to answer his question, her tone now slightly sarcastic.

'Of course I am, I'm not afraid of being here on my own..my mother will be around somewhere I am sure.' she said airily. What a waste he was! He could be a fine killer, he certainly looked the part at any rate, and that was half of it. A strong appearance struck fear, and when you had a creatures fear, you'd won.

Cobalt merely smiled at her words, realizing that she had the same mindset as all the other Kalona that he had met. "I am...I would be proud if I were not such a disgrace. You see, my blood is thinned with the blood of a regular...I am not malicious enough to even be considered Kalona, nor do I think I will ever be. But you have every right to be proud. You are a fine example of the Kalona race."

Oh, how Cobalt wished he, too, could be proud of his Kalona blood! But so long as he was a weakling...so long as he held gentle emotions in his heart, he could never deserve such pride. The half of himself that was not Kalona whispered that he was lucky that he was not violent and abrasive, but he shrugged those thoughts away, in favor of the thoughts of disappointment and shame.

"As well you shouldn't be. Fear is unbecoming of one such as you, although it would be a safer course in these parts." Cobalt glanced out at the lake. Her mother was nearby? More reason for him to leave soon. He didn't want to come face to face with a grown Kalona mare...then again, he wasn't really sure if her mother was Kalona...Shinoma was unlike any Kalona foal he had met, perhaps her wispy shadow-like features were from some other breed.

Shinoma had heard from her mother that there were halfings that loathed their blood, and did everything they could to be 'normal'. Shinoma couldn't see how they could, she felt the fire inside of her all the time, and she couldn't imagine not letting it burn wild.

She let herself puff up at his words; see, even the half-hearted ones could see her greatness! She would be a most wicked mare. Still..it was a great pity that he wasn't out there making things his dinner.

'I could teach you to hunt if ya like.' Shinoma offered, thinking it a most magninamous offer. After all, she'd gotten that Fluffstorm, or whatever his name had been to kill a rabbit, and Cobalt was waaay bigger. Just think what he could kill!

'Hmm?' she said, distracted for a moment by thoughts of the stallion taking down a, a deer or something!
'Nah, not gonna be afraid. Ever.' she boasted, grinning at the mere thought of it.
'Besides, not like I need to be afraid of you is it?' she said, out of spite more than anything.

"Teach...me?" Cobalt was surprised by her offer. He didn't think of himself as a hunter...true, there was some of the standard Kalona bloodlust, but he ignored that side of himself with a passion, fearing the loss of control it brought. That, and he felt shame even upon harming any living creature, he doubted he could ever bring himself to kill.

"If you are willing to try to teach a hopeless case, then I am willing to let you. However, I warn you not to expect much success with me. I am tainted with the blood of lessers, after all." He ran his tongue over his fangs. Perhaps they would get put to use after all. Or perhaps not. He still doubted that he'd be able to actually slay anything.

"No, young one. You need not be afraid of me." He said with a sigh. More proof of his unworthiness. If he was a true Kalona, she would have every right to fear him.

'I got a totally non-Kalona colt to hunt a rabbit, I can teach you no problem.' Shinoma boasted. She kicked the floor with a hoof, pondering where to take him. He was too big to start with something small, as he probably wouldn't be quick enough. She would have to drag him along to the clearing near the woods, see if any of the small herds of deer were out grazing yet.

'Yeah, well maybe we can sort that as well.' Shinoma said, frowning. He was becoming a project! Which was a little tiresome, but also a massive ego boost. If she could say that as a filly she'd gotten a half-Kalona stallion to turn from a pale reflection of his roots, to one to be feared..well! She could just imagine how well that would look.

'C'mon,' she said, turning on her heels, and waiting for him to follow her.

Still unconvinced that this "training" would actually go anywhere, Cobalt followed her silently, wondering why she would go out of her way to attempt to teach him to hunt. He knew enough about Kalona to know that she would only do something like this if there was something to be gained from it. His soft footfalls echoing behind her, he wondered what she would get out of training him. In his heart of hearts, he knew he was too gentle for this sort of training...but he wanted to be proud of his Kalona blood, to feel as if he deserved the wings on his back, and if this was the only way to do it, then he would do what was necessary, unless he absolutely couldn't force himself to do it.

"So...what exactly are we going to do?" He asked, something akin to worry etched on his shadowy face.

Cobalt supposed right; if Shinoma was successful, she would consider there a debt to be repaid...if she wasn't, then the stallion would be receiving a visit from her when she was older enough to punish him for wasting his Kalona blood.

The filly kept her vicious thoughts to herself though, slipping along the ground in the manner that her mother had taught her, tail bunched up so that it would rattle leaves or snare on any fallen branches.

'Shhh..' she hissed, flashing him a look that would have wilted a flower.
'We're looking for the deer, and we're going to find a weak or a young one for your first kill.'

She stopped, sniffing the air any scent of them, and then dropped her nose to the ground, trying to find any hoof scent, or even droppings of the deer.
After her first sweep she got lucky, her nostrils were filled with the musky scent of a male. The rest couldn't be far off and she whispered for Cobalt to follow her quietly.
Shinoma's tracking skill wasn't as good as her mothers, and she lost the scent a few times, but eventually she located a small herd as she crept around a stand of trees. They stood in a small dip a ways below them.

A deer? But they were so...innocent. The thought of shedding blood, let alone innocent blood, sent shudders racing down his spine. Cobalt didn't think he could kill something so pure. His blue eyes, veiled in shadows, peered up at the little filly. She obviously had no qualms about what was about to happen. She was truly the perfect predator. And he...he was nothing but a kind-hearted soul with a touch of Kalona madness. For he must have at least a touch of it to think for even a moment that this scheme would work.

Nevertheless, he continued to follow Shinoma, anxiousness weighing heavily on his heart.

When she finally stopped, he looked up from the ground. He saw the herd of deer, and his heart dropped. He couldn't do it. There was no way he could harm something so gentle.

He would've turned tail and ran, but something held him there. A dark thought whispered through his mind, a morbid curiosity. What would it taste like? What would it feel like, to be the hunter he was born to be? Cobalt shivered as those black thoughts swirled around in his head. Conflicted and torn, his eyebrows drew together as he thought about what to do next.

Shinoma only got deer meat as a rare treat when her mother was too full to finish off a carcass. She liked that though, because often the smaller organs got left and those were the sweetest. Her mouth dripped with saliva at the thought and she looked up at Cobalt.

'Okay..' she whispered, crouching and nestling amongst the long grass, her eyes scanning the herd.

'There is usually either a younger deer, or an older one. Weaker. When one seperates from the herd you can bring it down.'
