I've often asked myself this question: is the truth of the Gospel made false as a result of hypocrisy?

Many believers are taught that credibility in one's faith is everything. Jesus himself speaks of blind guides, the blind leading the blind and has a lot to say about hypocrisy in general, but surely the truth should be able to stand on its own regardless of the level of hypocrisy in the individual?

If the truth is false because it is forgotten in a moment of weakness, then we are all wrong.

Maybe that's why people like Moses, Jesus, are Mohammed are so often seen as infallible; because they clinged to their truth despite any trials they went through. Maybe that's what makes truth true; that it survives through the tests we make it undergo.

I actually have to agree with that.

I think that there is a difference between hypocrisy and failing. I see hypocrisy as a DELIBERATE violation of those standards you preach. I really don't think anyone is really a hypocrite if they simply fall victim to temptation. It just makes them human.

Is it better not to preach if one considers oneself very likely to fail?

I feel like if you are directly preaching against something, to then to do it would be hypocrisy. If you just make a bad decision against your moral code, than is not.

I suppose the difference is in one it involves you advising and telling others how to live as well, so you are seen as a role model.

Hello!

Hypocrisy is when someone speaks against something but performs the act anyway, correct? So if a pastor preaches against sinning but sins, what would that be? It's really confusing... I agree with what Ophelianime-san, though.

So Jesus was only protesting against the use of the Law to opress the public of the time?

Yes, hypocrisy (in its most accurate sense) is when one maintains or accuses another of doing a particular something when one is doing it oneself.

In your example, the pastor would be a hypocrite. In your example, I would ask "if the pastor's preaching against sin was sound advice, should his sin (and therefore his hypocrisy) be a reason not to follow that advice despite its soundness?"

I would say that real truth does not depend on the person telling it. If you believe in the words of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Gospel, then it does not matter how the person who told you about the Gospel acts. The Bible has authority over any pastor or teacher.

I just recently moved away for college and have had to find a new church. Typically, I have found that the churches that are the most "true" in a sense are the churches that stay focused on the actual words of the Bible instead of personal anecdotes and such. However, a bad preacher can still show "truth" from the Bible even if everything else he says or does is wrong.

For example, the church that I grew up in and where I first became a Christian turned out to be led by a ... sinful preacher. He purposely did a lot of things that went directly against what he taught on Sundays; however, the things that I learned on those Sundays were not necessarily wrong. I am now much more careful about churches and now know that truth is completely independent from any man even if it is a man who introduces a concept to you. I would never believe anything as "true" unless I could find proof, for myself, of it in the Bible. The best way for you to know the truth is to read the Bible by yourself, so that you will be able to know whether or not something you have heard is really something taught in the Bible.

I don't know if that answers your question because your question was a little vague, but I hope it helped even a little bit.

I don't think you should cease to preach something that you truly believe in just because you fail to follow your own convictions sometimes. As long as you admit it was wrong, apologize then pick yourself up and try again. I think what counts is not that you are consistently successful but that you consistently try to follow those standards which you set. Especially if part of what you preach is forgiveness.

Ophelianime: I love that. That's beautiful
