Death Note has got to be one of the best anime I've seen, it's quite mind-blowing. this discussion should only be for those who have finished the series because it will be quite spoilerific. First lets start off with who's your favorite character and give a good reason.

My favorite character in Death Note is probably Mellow.
He seems more human to me then any of the other characters. Perhaps its because of how much conflict is found around him.
Hes an extremely intelligent character, but hes also quite emotional, and that usually that gets in the way. He also has a faster initiative then N, and as an end result, is the one who sets up Kira's trap, effectively sacrificing himself in the process.

I haven't exactly finished it, but I'm watching and reading.
I think that Near and L could be considered my favorite characters.
They're both quite intelligent.

My favoritre character has to be Ryuk. and Light
his only intention to begin was to give a human the death note for the sake of his amusement, and it pretty much exploded. by one simple act, he was able to start a domino that left a huge impact in a world and he has to bear no consequences, he gets to kick back, relax,and eat apples.
I like Light, simply because i find him interesting. he starts off innocent. He wants the world to be cleansed, I think this is one of the Only points the movie presented better. In the movie, he finds a thug that had killed a whole family, but got off scotch free because he was legally insane, so they let him loose. and after that he loses faith in the system and in turn tries to cleanse it.
but of course, there's nothing more dangerous than a zealot. After he gets to be crazed with power and convinced the gods chose him (even though Ryuk told him otherwise) he starts to lose sight of his original plan and starts killing innocent people, cops, and people who speak against him.
SPOILERS IF YOU HAVNE"T READ PAST #7
although ialmost never finished the seires, after book 7, L died, and i just didn't care so much anymore. Light was an arrogant a*****e, Near was inhuman and just didn't interest me. His expressions were very monotone, and couldn't compare to L's quirky smiles and poise.
I read it in japanese, but there's just SOOO much text when Near talks. (idk if it's the same in english) i usually just skipped ahead to Mello, light, and Delete guy to see what they were up to.

I would have to say my favorite character was Matsuda mostly because he kept me entertained with his cocky ways and his foolish acts. He would always risk his life for the investigation. Matsuda stopped at nothing to try to get Kira, although he was quite naive.
Even though Matsuda was my favorite i think the best character in the series was Light. He was the most developed,mostly cuz he was the main character, but he was very clever until the end where he started underestimating N. He was very ambitious he never stopped trying to achieve his goal, even after he was found out he kept on trying to convince otherwise that he was Kira.

My favorite character would have to be L.
I loved how all he ate was sweets and he has to be one of the oddest characters in Deathnote. And his interactions with Light were very entertaining especially when they were chained together.
