Once a week, Evan and Xi took a pot to the kitchen and -- true to their Depression-era form, which was never to buy anything if they couldn't make it themselves -- boiled up enormous heaps of differently-coloured Play-Doh, which made the daycare smell sweetly bizarre, and clued in every child that they were about to be able to squish different shapes and eat large quantities of it (it was non-toxic) and throw the horrible substance at each other. If you were diligent you could end up moulding yourself a sort of Play-Doh armour and walk around the daycare collecting dust, lint and sand.
Play-Doh day was so fun that sometimes some of the Liberty Center kids dropped by on purpose after school, to revert back to form and to make purple spaghetti or whatever their heart's desire was (so long as their heart's desire was in the form of Play-Doh). Both Evan and Xi disappeared into the kitchen to finish Play-Doh Preparation during naptime, coming out occasionally to make sure nobody had eaten anybody else, and soon the slightly weird smell had started filling the air. It was a rare kid who couldn't find something to do with it, even if it just consisted of sticking it up their nose.
It was dumped in large multicoloured tubs on the Exploration table, a fresh canvas for mayhem.

"Dun wanna-"
"Sweetie, I gotta go to work." Conan said softly, walking up to the daycare with his little bundle in his arms. "You just gotta stay here for a bit. There're other kids, I bet you'll have fun."
"No." She sounded so pouty. Conan kissed her head, carefully opening the daycare door.
"Don't worry, honey. And it smells like Play-Doh. You like that!"
"No."
Well, at least she had that one word down. Conan carefully sat the little girl down, straightening her dress, combing his fingers through her hair. He leaned forward and gave her a kiss on the forehead.
"Be good, Minny."
Minerva sighed. Sometimes, Daddy was silly. "'Kay."
"That's my girl."

Xi had just wandered out with a wooden spoon -- coloured in worrying multicoloured paste-hues -- and set it down on a table immediately as he saw Minerva; gave Conan a wave in passing as he dropped down on one knee to smile at her. You couldn't see Xi's mouth, as it was wrapped up in a bandanna, but his eyes smiled well.
"Hey, little bit," he said comfortably. "Why don't you come over here and we'll put your name in the registry book? Just so we make sure we don't lose you. Wanna come help do that?"

"No." Minerva pouted as best she could, gripping Conan's pants. The teen carefully removed her fingers, gave her one last kiss, one last 'Be Good', and left.
She watched him go, sniffling, then held out one hand towards Xi.
"Don't loose me." She repeated softly, blinking slowly and swaying back and forth gently.

He took her tiny hand in his much larger one and slung her up on his hip, lifting her up as he went over to the front desk to flip through the registrar. Naptime was still going on around the daycare; it was filled with bright decorations. And, of course, playdough smell. "We oughta have you down here somewhere," the big man was saying, "lessee. What's your name, half-pint?"

Sophia was off at school-like the good girl she was-and, surprise, Rye actually had a job this morning. That meant that, yes, Sean was going to daycare like a normal little boy. If you could ever call a kid with a tail and ears that sprang from a cabbage normal. But, as Rye said, normalcy was subjective. Besides, who cared?
Sean didn't. But then, it was hard for him to care about anything when he was half asleep. The lazy little boy had been dragged snoozing all the way here. Perhaps it was his silent protest to being dumped off at another location with a bunch of other kids.
Though he was pretty limp in her arms, Rye twisted him about to set him on his feet anyway once they had stepped into the room. His body sagged a little and she let him slip harmlessly onto his bum. While it didn't hurt, it woke him up. He squinted at her grumpily, his mouth forming into a twist frown.
"Mommy's going to work," Rye said cheerfully, ruffling the top of his head with affection. "You can have lots of fun here, staying with the other kids."
Sean's ears drooped and he seemed to glower while making a long groaning noise. Apparently he didn't agree.

Minerva kicked her feet idly. She liked being held, and this new person could hold the same as Daddy.
"Minerva." She said as she kicked her feet, looking down at her shoes. At the groan, she turned her head slightly to look. Was that...?
"Kitty." She said, eyeing the new person. "...Foxy. Kitty?"

Xi finished scribbling down her name and noting her off in the registry -- she had been registered before anyway -- and plopped her down promptly by sleepy little Sean, as it was always good to have two grousing babies see that each other were, in fact, interesting.
"What's your name, fuzz bucket?" he said, dropping down by them both; he gave Rye a wink. "Let's get you down too. -- Say, you two want to play together? We got the play-doh out; don't know if you two like play-doh. Want to see if you do?"

The smell of new Play-doh was the most wonderful smell in the world, Cecelia decided as she entered the Daycare. You didn’t get that heavenly scent from the canned stuff, no sir, this was fresh. Yeah, she was a little too old to be here, but Play-doh days were the exception, not the rule.
Mommy even let her skip school on Play-doh day. Of course, mommy thought she wasn’t feeling good, but that was a different story. She danced into the building and went to stand near two kids much smaller than she was, talking to an adult. Better not touch the wonderful play-stuff until she got the go-ahead; adults could be touchy about things like that.

As Minerva spoke Sean's ears twitched and swivled in her direction. His grumpy expression remained on his face, as if it were stuck that way, but he did seem to be waking up. "No," he replied short and quickly to her comments. Only thing was, he didn't tell her what he was.
That little wink of confidence from Xi was all Rye needed. She flashed Sean a bright smile and zipped off. She had to get to work, after all, even if she wasn't exactly a punctual person.
"No," Sean grunted at Xi, apparently to being called 'fuzz bucket'. He pointed at himself, though the gesture looked a little hap-hazzard and drowsy, "Sean."

Now that she was closer, Minerva was pretty sure that he was a fox. His ears were so pretty...!
"Sean?" She asked, since Daddy would've scolded her if she hadn't. "Sean? Can I touch ears? Look soft."
Granted, the Foxy seemed to be kinda grumpy, but hopefully that would change if he woke up.

Sean's name was scribbled down; Xi looked incredibly grateful at Cecelia's presence. He went over and pried up the tops of all the playdough containers, and then went to the kitchen to get the fresh stuff; the final colourful bits were plopped down on the tables.
"There we go," he said, "have at 'em. Hey, Cece, you here to keep the troops in line? You're my angel. I'll have to marry you one of these days. C'mon, kids, dough's up. Go play with it when it's still warm. That's the best part."

Cece giggled happily, she liked the running stream of colemplments and being put in charge. She martched closer to the kids and stood infornt of them.
"Come on toemunchers!" She said cheerfuly to the kiddlets, guestering to the rather large piles of Play-Doh. "Let's makes some. . . STUFF!" Grinning foolishly, she lead the way to the table.

"No," Sean grunted at Minerva. He didn't want his ears touched. He wasn't a touchy-feely kind of kid. Maybe it was because he was nearly smothered at home. At least, he thought he was. As much as a toddler could think he was smothered anyway.
He stood up, tail lashing out as he wobbled a little. Then he trooped over to where the play dough was. He frowned at stared at it, as if he wasn't sure exactly what it was for. Or maybe he just didn't have any ideas right now.

Minny made a face at him. Stupid Foxy. She followed him over, grabbing a hunk of it, then looking at his face.
"It's doh." She said, squeezing it between her hands. "Make it into stuff." She flopped on the ground, her knee joints all awry, and started rolling her ball into a long cylinder. La la la~
