The copper pelted lioness lay in the shade under her favorite tree. It was her favorite for a reason. It was large enough to provide an adequate shade, and it had leaves, which meant that the occasional pinprick of light would find its way through and land on her coat, making that single spot seem as if it had just caught fire.
It was also next to the water.
Mzuza had realized as a cub that where there was water, there were pebbles, and she had long since marked out this very tree as her favorite. There was shade, water, and pebbles.
Getting to her paws, she wandered over to the water's edge and chose herself a small, round pebble. Picking it up, she returned to her shade and set it on the ground before her, fixing her crimson eyes on the little stone.
She had tried it hundreds of times before and it had never worked, so she had little reason to think that it might this time. But she believed that one day, it would work. She was magical, dammit, and one of these days she was going to prove it.

It was becoming more and more common for Kimbizi to go out on his own now. He'd been exploring without his parents for a while, of course, since his mother was so encouraging for that sort of thing. With seven siblings, however, he had almost always had a tag-a-long with him. Or he had been playing tag-a-long. No matter who was leading and who was tagging, he had usually had a brother or sister with him. Now, however, with at least a few of the eight considering moving out on their own, Zizi had become more seperated. He still felt a strong connection to his family (there were so many of them, after all), but he also felt like getting away from them was... refreshing.
On this particular day, the young male had strutted his way on over to a watering hole he didn't often visit. It wasn't the closest one to his parents' den, so he didn't need to come out here for a drink. Instead, he was just parading around, showing off as usual, and had decided it was a great time to go get a sip and look at his reflection a little. He was, after all, quite the strapping young lad.
He was pleased as he approached to find that a lioness was situated under the tree next to the water. She seemed to be fully concentrating on her front paws from his angle. If Zizi hadn't been raised by Intombi, who was notorious for staring at her pink toe bands, he might've thought this odd and turned away. Instead, however, he put on quite the show, prancing over to the water with his head and tail held proud and high. Little did he know he was walking straight over to a princess, and more importantly an old friend of his mother's.

Movement by the water caught her eye, breaking her focus. She blinked her bright eyes, gazing down at the pebble for another moment. Damn. It was still right where she had put it. So much for proving her claims of magic. Then again, the same thing had been happening to her since her childhood, and Mzuza was by now well used to experiencing the failures of her trade. It was all part of being magical. You knew, but you couldn't prove it. Not when you wanted to, anyway.
The copper lioness lifted her head, then, to see the gray adolescent prancing his way over. She smiled to her. Adolescents. There was something vaguely familiar about him, though she couldn't quite put a paw on what. She recognized a bit of another lion in this one.
She didn't know any gray lions, after all. There were blue ones, but Kialio had been completely blue, and white ones, and all the different shades of brown and gold in her family. But no gray.
As the lion neared, she pushed herself up into a sitting position to make it easier for her to see him. It was infuriatating how she seemed to recognize him, but not quite. There was always that something.
