so the blood drive came to my school, and one of my friends is gay and he was turned down from donating blood because of his sexuality. does anybody besides be find this wrong?

I find it odd that they asked about his sexuality in the first place. If they want to know whether his blood is safe to give, they should look at his medical records to see if he has any qualities in his blood that wouldn't let him donate (I, for instance, have too low of blood pressure to give blood). I suppose they're afraid of AIDS, which is a legitimate reason, but apparently they're under the illusion that it's only gay men who get AIDS (which isn't true, because anyone else can get AIDS too whether through unsafe sex or sharing syringes). Things like this tend to happen a lot, which is unfair.

ellie is right, they shouldn't ask his sexuality in the first place.

if it were me, i would just sit there and refuse to move until they took my blood.

yeah, how did his sexuality come up in the first place??? Even if it was a legitimate question, they can't turn him down unless they have a practical reason. And any practical reason for turning him down would not have anything to do with his sexuality. What in the world.....

Actually, it's on the medical history questionnaire that they give you, at least in my state.

I gave blood for the first time a couple months back and when I saw that, I laughed at the absurdity of it. The way it was worded, only homosexual males who'd been sexual active within 3-6 months of giving blood were ineligible.

They already had the AIDS questions, so it made no sense to bar homosexual males.

Since I'm a bisexual female, I just moved along on the questionnaire and wondered at how many people were denied blood because they would have recieved it from a gay guy. Pretty ridiculous.

I've given blood three times. It is on the question list, as someone mentioned. In my state, if you're a dude and you've had sex with a dude AFTER 1977, you cannot give. I guess anytime before that, and you're cool. o_o

Anyway. I actually challenged that question to my screener last time I was in there. This is how the conversation went:
Me: I wanted to ask a question about a friend... He wants to give blood, but we don't know if he is able to.
Screener: Okay.
Me: The question thing said something about... Males who've had sex with other males?
Screener: Right. He can never give.
Me: Oh... *genuinely curious* Why is that policy in place, anyway?
Screener: *dramatic pause, not looking at me* You know why.
Me: ...
Screener: *sounding disgusted* It's the AIDS thing...
Me: Oh...

I. Was. FUMING!!!
But he has actually never been tested... Or used a condom. ._. So that just made him feel REALLY bad, and now he's really scared and is planning on getting a blood test soon.

Now, I understand that, because if ANYONE is having unprotected sex... They shouldn't be giving blood. I'm a virgin, I do not have to worry about that. But if he waits six months and gets a blood test, then why shouldn't they allow him to give? Damn...

Hehe. Me and two of my friends are giving blood together in November. One is a bi guy, and the other is gay. They're both boy-virgins, so we wanna get them in there as quickly as possible. xD

Tell me about it. I have AB, and since I've had sex since 1977, with condoms, and tested partners, I can't give. I've been tested 4 times, and each time the tests came back negative, and I've never once contracted an STD. *sigh* Anyway, the other questions on the questionaire are rather absurd as well. Have you ever had sex for drugs or money? Have you ever had sex with anyone who has ever had sex for money or drugs? Have you had sex with anyone who might have had sex with someone who has sex for money or drugs?

No joke... Well, even though I'm negative, and have the second rarest type of blood in the world, I can't give.

It's a screwed up and archaic rule from the 80s that needs to be changed... like now. Especially since the predominant population that makes up AIDS patients is heterosexual woman.

I don't like to donate blood (cause I hate that CapriSun straw they have for a needle) but I recently found out that I'm O negative so I was thinking of donating blood when they make the blood drives in college. Still, if they would reject me I would want a logical reason not a biased response. It's funny how up till now they keep at it with the stereotypical margins... neutral

My friend came up with a protest slogan: We're here, we're queer, we want to volunteer.

Seriously, if it's healthy blood, who's gonna care if it comes from a straight woman or a gay man?

It's funny... America wants us to "help" the country, and promises freedom for everyone.... yet when it comes to gay rights, most americans turn a blind eye, and when we wanna help by donating our blood, they reject us because of who we are scream Ah, ignorance.... a tool for the weak minded indeed.

He was trying to help and was turned down?
That's so messed up!
Does that mean there's something wrong with my blood to make me gay?
I heard being gay is something about the environment and chemicals in the brain.
Seriously, Why did they ask his sexuality in the 1st place?

Mainly because back in the day AIDS was considered the "Gay disease" and a punishment from God. Still, it's amazing how through all this years that question has managed to remain considering all the studies that have taken place proving that kind of reasoning WRONG.

It's only free if you're not heard too loudly.

It sucks, but that's all the more reason to do something about it!
And, the only reason for that "AFTER 19"...something thing (my memory is shot) is because there was a time in history where (most ppl deny it, but it's true,) guys secretly slept together and passes disease on (and it still happens today). If that's your state’s excuse (which it probably is), they're tackles and are handling the situation wrong. You should stand up and say something, anything...make a statement of it, but don't let it go unreconized.
