So I was thinking about playing FFVIII again and I was fighting myself about it because of the names I typically use when playing that game (Long story short, the names are kinda hurtful now, but they're what I love to use) when I thought about asking you guys this.
Do you guys use the "Official" Canon Names for everything or do you make up your own?
Now, to break this down, I mean everything from picking the names of your Characters (Squall, Cloud, Zidane, etc etc), to Summons (Shiva, Ifrit, Bahamut, etc), to Items (Griever, etc), any and every thing that is able to be named.
So, what things do you rename? What don't you? Do you do it because it makes the game feel more personal, or do you not because you like keeping it the way it was "intended"?

I pretty much always keep the normal names, at least my first time through the game. Occasionally if I'm replaying it, I'll try and be silly. I think last time in VIII I named Griever Kittycat. ^^ I do it because unless I'm trying to be silly, if I name them something different, I won't see them as the same characters or whatever anymore, and it'll just be weird, plus that's how it was intended. Then if they start talking about whatever I renamed, I also tend to forget what I named them.  How about the raft in Kingdom Hearts? Did everyone keep it Excalibur? I think I changed it to Highwind, 'cause I just liked Riku's idea better.

I typically always leave the normal names, unless I really dislike the character. I messed with Seifer and Zells names in 8, as well as Quina's in IX sometimes.
I'm like Ravenwolf, if I rename them, I'll forget what it is.

I keep everything the official. Partially because I'm lazy, but mostly because I like to keep it 'as is'.
Occasionally I'll change the names of summons or the like, but that's only during second run-throughs, or if I really don't like the chosen name (things like re-naming Clan Nutsy in TA, or the raft in KH).

I do the same. I do change some of the main character's though, but I most keep them as the offical names. I don't rename the summons, it would kind of confuse me, I guess.

I usually rename the characters based on who of my friends they remind me of the most, but past the main characters/enemies, I leave everything named normal.
What do you guys use for your custom names? Do you base them on friends, or just names you like?

I have never re-named a character, but I'd probably name it after friends. As for other things, I tend to cross reference other games. Examples would be renaming all the aeons after the espers of XII, or the raft Strahl.

It would be kind of fun to name them all after characters similar to the original from different games/anime/books/et cetera. Like... I can't think of a good example right now, actually.
I wouldn't name them after real people, though. Unless it's naming Rinoa Britney or something. xd (But I wouldn't do that, 'cause I actually like Rinoa.)
You know what I like? In IX, when you get to name Dagger:
"What's this called?"
"A dagger."
"Great, I know! Call me Betty."
Or something.

I keep the offical names as well. Back when I played Final Fantasy 4 and 6 on the Snes i didn't but since FF7 I have always kept the official names.

I generally keep the names because they are what was intended. Plus I find it very hard to pick something that I think sounds cool enough. If I do change them at all it's usually justa averiation on the existing.

Depends what mood I'm in or what FF game I'm playing. FFIV is a good example. I hate the name Cecil, I really do.
FFVII is another one where I'll change the names. Cloud usually becomes Vanilla and Barrett becomes Mr T.

I usually stick to all the original names on my first playthrough.
Then on any playthrough after that, I'll change all the names as I go, to names that I like and that I think fit the people.
Thats about it though, I like keeping it original when I first play.

I normally stick with canon names, with 1 exception I can remember when I named them all after BtVS characters.
